The soldier fly is an endemic pest of sugarcane in *** numbers of larvae can cause significant damage to roots and reduce the crop *** is k.own about the composition and function of the soldier fly salivary gland,its secretions,and their roles in insect—plant *** this study,we performed transcriptome analysis of the salivary glands of starved and sugarcane root-fed soldier fly larvae.A total of 31119 highly expressed assembled contigs were identified in the salivary glands and almost 50%of them showed high levels of similarity to k.own proteins in Nr *** all the obtained contigs,only 9727 sequences contain an open reading frame of over 100 amino *** 31%of contigs were predicted to encode secretory proteins,including some digestive and detoxifying enzymes and potential *** k.own salivary secreted peptides such as serine protease,cysteine proteinase inhibitors,antimicrobial peptides and venom proteins were among the top 100 highly expressed *** gene expression analysis revealed significant modulation of 850 transcripts in salivary glands upon exposure to plant roots or starvation ***,we identified some venom proteins which were significantly upregulated in the salivary glands of soldier fly larvae exposed to sugarcane *** other insects and nematodes some of these proteins have been used to manipulate host plant defense systems and facilitate the invasion of the host *** findings provide a further insight into the identification of potential effector proteins involved in soldier fly-sugarcane interactions.

A broad range of organic compounds are k.own to exist in drink.ng water sources and serve as precursors of disinfection byproducts（DBPs）.Epidemiological findings of an association of increased risk.of bladder cancer with the consumption of chlorinated water has resulted in health concerns about *** are thought to be an important category of DBP precursors in ***,little is k.own about the actual presence of peptides and their DBPs in drink.ng water because of their high sample complexity and low *** address this challenge and identify peptides and non-chlorinated/chlorinated peptide DBPs from large sets of organic compounds in water,we developed a novel high throughput analysis strategy,which integrated multiple solid phase extraction（SPE）,high performance liquid chromatography（HPLC）separation,and non-target identification using precursor ion exclusion（PIE）high resolution mass spectrometry（MS）.After MS analysis,structures of candidate compounds,particularly peptides,were obtained by searching against the Human Metabolome Database（HMDB）.Using this strategy,we successfully detected 625 peptides（out of 17,205 putative compounds）and 617 peptides（out of 13,297）respectively in source and finished water *** source and finished water samples had 501 peptides and amino acids in *** remaining 116 peptides and amino acids were unique to the finished *** a subset of 30 putative compounds for which standards were available,25 were confirmed using HPLC-MS *** analyzing the peptides identified in source and finished water,we successfully confirmed three disinfection reaction pathways that convert peptides into toxic DBPs.

AIM：To survey ophthalmologists（who have participated previously in clinical research） and ophthalmic industry professionals（who have been involved in ocular research and development） to indicate perceived needs for new pharmaceuticals in various ophthalmic ***：A prospective,industry-based survey was sent to ophthalmologists and ophthalmic industry professionals about the perceived needs for new pharmaceutical ***：This survey was sent to 559 ophthalmic pharma professionals and *** received 82（15%） *** results showed that the most commonly perceived need for new pharmaceuticals were dry and wet age-related macular degeneration,glaucoma,diabetic macular edema and dry *** was a statistical difference found between response groups（P〈0.0001）.Respondents indicated they would express their commitment to a new product they perceived as needed by recommending to colleagues（63%）,prescribing（60%）,participating as principle investigator in a related clinical trial（52%）,advising the company（52%）,lecturing on behalf of the product（43%）,investing in the product（38%）,tak.ng no action（7%） or obtain a position in the company（1%）.CONCLUSION：Ophthalmic pharma professionals and ophthalmologists perceive the greatest need for new medicines in ophthalmology to be in dry and wet agerelated macular degeneration,glaucoma,diabetic macular edema and dry eye.

AIM To determine if racial disparities continue to exist in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).METHODS A retrospective database analysis using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample was performed including patients with a primary diagnosis of HCC. Univariate and multivariate analyses were utilized to determine racial disparities in liver decompensation, treatment, inpatient mortality, and metastatic *** A total of 62604 patients with HCC were included consisting of 32428 Caucasian, 9726 African-American, 8988 Hispanic, and 11462 patients of other races. Caucasian patients were more lik.ly to undergo curative therapies of liver transplant(OR: 2.66, 95%CI: 1.92-3.68), resection(OR: 1.82, 95%CI: 1.48-2.23), and ablation(OR: 1.77, 95%CI: 1.36-2.30) than African-American patients. Hispanic patients were more lik.ly to undergo transplant(OR: 2.18, 95%CI: 1.40-3.39) and ablation(OR: 1.46, 95%CI:1.05-2.03) than African-American patients. Patients of other races were more lik.ly to receive a liver transplant(OR: 2.41, 95%CI: 1.62-3.61), resection(OR: 1.79 95%CI: 1.39-2.32), and ablation(OR: 2.03, 95%CI: 1.47-2.80) than African-American patients. There are no differences in the rates of transarterial chemoembolization between *** Racial disparities in HCC treatment exist despite emphasis to support equality in healthcare. African-American patients are less lik.ly to undergo curative treatments for HCC.

While our understanding of male reproductive strategies is informed by extensive investigations into endocrine mechanisms, the proximate mechanisms by which females compete for mates and adjust reproduction to social environment remains enigmatic. We set out to uncover endocrine correlates of mate choice, social environment, and reproductive investment in female red-back.d fairy-wrensMalurus melanocephalus. In this socially monogamous, yet highly sexually promiscuous species, females experience discrete variation in the phenotype of their mates, which vary in both plumage signals and level of paternal care, and in the composition of their breeding groups, which consist of either the pair alone or with an additional cooperative auxiliary; female investment varies according to these social parameters. We found that androgen, estrogen, and glucorticoid levels varied with reproductive stage, with highest androgen and estrogen concentrations during nest construction and highest corticosterone concentrations during the pre-breeding stage. These stage-dependent patterns did not vary with male phenotype or auxiliary presence, though androgen levels during pre-breeding mate selection were lower in females obtaining red/black.mates than those obtaining brown mates. We found no evidence that androgen, estrogen, or corticosterone levels during the fertile period were related to extra-pair young (EPY) frequency. This study demonstrates clear changes in steroid levels with reproductive stage, though it found little support for variation with social environment. We suggest hormonal responsiveness to social factors may be physiologically constrained in ways that are bypassed through exogenous hormone manipulations.
