The rapid growth of smart technologies and services has intensified the challenges surrounding identity authenti-cation techniques.Biometric credentials are increasingly being used for verification due to their advantages over traditional methods,making it crucial to safeguard the privacy of people’s biometric data in various scenarios.This paper offers an in-depth exploration for privacy-preserving techniques and potential threats to biometric systems.It proposes a noble and thorough taxonomy survey for privacy-preserving techniques,as well as a systematic framework for categorizing the field’s existing literature.We review the state-of-the-art methods and address their advantages and limitations in the context of various biometric modalities,such as face,fingerprint,and eye detection.The survey encompasses various categories of privacy-preserving mechanisms and examines the trade-offs between security,privacy,and recognition performance,as well as the issues and future research directions.It aims to provide researchers,professionals,and decision-makers with a thorough understanding of the existing privacy-preserving solutions in biometric recognition systems and serves as the foundation of the development of more secure and privacy-preserving biometric technologies.

BAcKGROUND Direct-acting antiviral agents(DAAs)are highly effective treatment for chronic hepatitis c(cHc)with a significant rate of sustained virologic response(SVR).The achievement of SVR is crucial to prevent additional liver damage and slow down fibrosis progression.The assessment of fibrosis degree can be performed with transient elastography,magnetic resonance elastography or shear-wave elastography(SWE).Liver elastography could function as a predictor for hepato-cellular carcinoma(Hcc)in cHc patients treated with DAAs.AIM To explore the predictive value of SWE for Hcc development after complete clearance of hepatitis c virus(HcV).METHODS A comprehensive literature search of clinical studies was performed to identify the ability of SWE to predict Hcc occurrence after HcV clearance.In accordance with the study protocol,a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the evidence was planned.RESULTS At baseline and after 12 wk of follow-up,a trend was shown towards greater liver stiffness(LS)in those who go on to develop Hcc compared to those who do not[baseline LS standardized mean difference(SMD):1.15,95%confidence interval(95%cI):020-2.50;LS SMD after 12 wk:0.83,95%cI:0.33-1.98].The absence of a statistically significant difference between the mean LS in those who developed Hcc or not may be related to the inability to correct for confounding factors and the absence of raw source data.There was a statist-ically significant LS SMD at 24 wk of follow-up between patients who developed Hcc vs not(0.64;95%cI:0.04-1.24).cONcLUSION SWE could be a promising tool for prediction of Hcc occurrence in patients treated with DAAs.Further studies with larger cohorts and standardized timing of elastographic evaluation are needed to confirm these data.

Background:Exercise training promotes brain plasticity and is associated with protection against cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease(AD).These beneficial effects may be partly mediated by blood-borne factors.Here we used an in vitro model of AD to investigate effects of blood plasma from exercise-trained donors on neuronal viability,and an in vivo rat model of AD to test whether such plasma impacts cognitive function,amyloid pathology,and neurogenesis.Methods:Mouse hippocampal neuronal cells were exposed to AD-like stress using amyloid-βand treated with plasma collected from human male donors 3 h after a single bout of high-intensity exercise.For in vivo studies,blood was collected from exercise-trained young male Wistar rats(high-intensity intervals 5 days/week for 6 weeks).Transgenic AD rats(McGill-R-Thyl-APP)were inj ected 5 times/fortnight for 6 weeks at2 months or 5 months of age with either(a)plasma from the exercise-trained rats,(b)plasma from sedentary rats,or(c)saline.cognitive function,amyloid plaque pathology,and neurogenesis were assessed.The plasma used for the treatment was analyzed for 23 cytokines.Results:Plasma from exercised donors enhanced cell viability by 44.1%(p=0.032)and reduced atrophy by 50.0%(pcells.In vivo exercised plasma treatment did not alter cognitive function or amyloid plaque pathology but did increase hippocampal neurogenesis by~3 fold,regardless of pathological stage,when compared to saline-treated rats.concentrations of 7 cytokines were significantly reduced in exercised plasma compared to sedentary plasma.conclusion:Our proof-of-concept study demonstrates that plasma from exercise-trained donors can protect neuronal cells in culture and promote adult hippocampal neurogenesis in the AD rat brain.This effect may be partly due to reduced pro-inflammatory signaling molecules in exercised plasma.

BAcKGROUND colonic adenomatous polyposis of unknown etiology(cPUE)is an adenomatous polyposis phenotype that resembles Familial Adenomatous Polyposis(FAP)even though no germline pathogenic variant is identified.AIM We sought to better characterize the clinical features and outcomes in a cohort of cPUE patients.METHODS This is a retrospective case series of patients 18 years old or older with adenomatous oligopolyposis(between 10-100 adenomas)and negative genetic testing,identified through the Hereditary Gastrointestinal cancer Database at Massachusetts General Hospital,a tertiary academic referral center.A retrospective chart review was performed with a focus on demographics,alcohol and tobacco use,medication use,familial malignancy and polyp burden,genetic testing information,endoscopic surveillance data including the corresponding histopathology,colonic and extracolonic malignancies,mortality events,and their etiology.Spearman correlation and Pearson chi-square test(or Fisher's exact test)were used for continuous and categorical variables respectively.RESULTS cPUE patients were primarily male(69%)and presented for genetic counseling at 63.7 years.Only 2 patients(2.9%)reported a first-degree relative with polyposis.During an average surveillance period of 12.3 years,0.5 colonoscopies per year were performed.Patients developed 2.3 new adenomas per year.4(5.7%)were diagnosed with colorectal cancer(cRc)at a mean age of 66 years,and 3 were diagnosed prior to the onset of oligopolyposis.7(10%)required colectomy due to advanced dysplasia or polyp burden.With respect to upper gastrointestinal manifestations,1 patient had a gastric adenoma,but there were no cases of gastric or small bowel polyposis.During surveillance,10(14%)patients died at a mean age of 72,and none were due to cRc.cONcLUSION cPUE is distinct from familial adenomatous polyposis(FAP)syndrome and the use of FAP surveillance guidelines may result in unnecessarily frequent upper and lower endoscopies.

The application of non-linear loads in the power electronic device causes serious harmonic issues in the power system since it has the intrinsic prop-erty of retrieving harmonic current and reactive power from Alternating current(Ac)supply that leads to voltage instability.To maintain a reliable powerﬂow in the power system,an innovative Uniﬁed Power Flow converter(UPFc)is uti-lized in this proposed approach.The conventional series converter is replaced with the Modular Multilevel converter(MMc)that improves the power handling capability and achieves higher modular level with minimized distortions.The shunt compensator assists in minimizing the voltageﬂuctuations and maximizing the voltage stability under different load constraints.The Direct Quadrature(DQ)theory is utilized in this study to separate the harmonic components by generating reference frame current.The Proportional Integral(PI)controller aids in maintain-ing the direct current potential difference in the constant mode whereas the Pulse Width Modulation(PWM)generator helps in delivering optimized output to the MMc.The gain parameters of PI controller are optimized with the aid of employ-ing Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO).The entire work is validated using MATLAB simulink and the obtained outcomes proves that this new UPFc is highly beneﬁcial in minimizing the distortions with reduced Total Harmonic Distortion(THD)of 2.21%.

The diagnostic approach to a possible pancreatic mass lesion relies first upon various non-invasive imaging modalities, including computed tomography, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging techniques. Once a suspect lesion has been identified, tissue acquisition for characterization of the lesion is often paramount in developing an individualized therapeutic approach. Given the high prevalence and mortality associated with pancreatic cancer, an ideal approach to diagnosing pancreatic mass lesions would be safe, highly sensitive, and reproducible across various practice settings. Tools, in addition to radiologic imaging, currently employed in the initial evaluation of a patient with a pancreatic mass lesion include serum tumor markers, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, and endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration(EUS-FNA). EUS-FNA has grown to become the gold standard in tissue diagnosis of pancreatic lesions.

Beta-defensin 20(DEFB20)is widely expressed in the epididymis with gene features involved in epididymal sperm maturation.However,the action mechanism and function of DEFB20 in sperm maturation are still unclear.One of the important roles of beta-defensin is the ion channel activity.The cation channel sperm-associated protein(catSper)alpha is an ion channel protein found on the sperm surface.This study aimed to investigate the interaction between DEFB20 and catSper1–4 protein in relation to the sperm maturation process.Protein sequences were obtained from the National center for Biotechnology Information(NcBI).Protein modeling and validation were carried out by using the Robetta modeling server and the Ramachandran plot method.Rosetta web server was used for the docking analysis.The results revealed a natural interaction between DEFB20 and catSper1–4.The interaction occurred at the cation channel(close to the casein kinase II),ion transport protein,and kinase c phosphorylation of the catSper1–4 active site.The DEFB20 region interacting with catSper2–4 was the beta-defensin domain,while with catSper1 was the non-beta-defensin domain.Based on the analysis,DEFB20 may interact with catSperαsubunits,particularly catsSper1,to affect ion channel activity during sperm maturation.
