Biodegradable implants are taking an increasingly important role in the area of orthopedic implants with the aim to replace permanent implants for temporary bone healing *** the implant preparation process,the material’s surface and microstructure are being changed by stresses induced by *** degradable metal implants need to be fully characterized in terms of the influence of machining on the resulting microstructure and corrosion *** this study,micro-computed tomography(μCT)is used for the quantification of the degradation rate of biodegradable *** our best knowledge,for the first time quantitative measures are introduced to describe the degradation homogeneity in *** information enables a prediction in terms of implant stability during the degradation in the *** magnesium gadolinium alloys,mg-5Gd and mg-10 Gd(all alloy compositions are given in weight%unless otherwise stated),in the shape of m2 headless screws have been investigated for their microstructure and their degradation performance up to 56 *** the microstructure investigations particular attention was paid to the localized deformation of the alloys,due to the machining *** vitro immersion testing was performed to assess the degradation performance quantified by subsequent weight loss and volume loss(usingμCT)*** differences were observed in the degree of screw’s near surface microstructure being influenced from machining,the degradation rates of both materials appeared to be suitable for application in orthopedic *** the degradation homogeneity point of view no obvious contrast was detected between both ***,the higher degradation depth ratios between the crests and roots of mg-5Gd ratios may indicated a less homogeneous degradation of the screws of these alloys on contract to the ones made of mg-10Gd *** to its lower degradation rates,its more homogeneous microstructure,its weaker texture

Polycrystalline diamond（PCd） films 100 mm in diameter are grown by 915 mHz microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition（mPCVd） at different process parameters,and their thermal conductivity（TC） is evaluated by a laser flash technique（LFT） in the temperature range of230-380 *** phase purity and quality of the films are assessed by micro-Raman spectroscopy based on the diamond Raman peak width and the amorphous carbon（a-C） presence in the *** and increasing dependencies for TC with temperature are found for high and low quality samples,***,as high as 1950 ± 230 W m-1 K-1 at room temperature,is measured for the most perfect material.A linear correlation between the TC at room temperature and the fraction of the diamond component in the Raman spectrum for the films is established.

c-Fos overexpression increases the proliferation of human hepatocytes by stabilizing nuclear Cyclin d1

AIm： To investigate the effect of stable c-Fos over- expression on immortalized human hepatocyte （IHH） proliferation. mETHOds： IHHs stably transfected with c-Fos （IHH- Fos） or an empty vector （IHH-C） were grown in me- dium supplemented with 1% serum or stimulated with 10% serum. Cell proliferation was assessed by cell counts, 3H-thymidine uptake and flow cytometry analyses. The levels of cell cycle regulatory proteins （Cyclin dI, E, A） cyclin dependent kinases （cdk） cdk2, cdk4, cdk6, and their inhibitors p15, p16, p21, p27, total and phosphorylated GsK-3β and epidermal growth factor receptor （EGF-R） were assayed by Western blotting. Analysis of O/c/in d1 mRNA levels was performed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and real-time polymerase chain reaction （PCR） analysis. stability of Cyclin dI was studied by cycloheximide blockade experiments. REsULTs： stable c-Fos overexpression increased cell proliferation under low serum conditions and resulted in a two-fold increase in [3H]-thymidine incorpora- tion following serum addition. Cell cycle analysis by flow cytometry showed that c-Fos accelerated the cell cycle kinetics. Following serum stimulation, Cyclin d1 was more abundantly expressed in c-Fos overexpress- ing cells. Cyclin d1 accumulation did not result from increased transcriptional activation, but from nuclear stabilization. Overexpression of c-Fos correlated with higher nuclear levels of inactive phosphorylated GsK- 3β, a kinase involved in Cyclin d1 degradation and higher levels of EGF-R mRNA, and EGF-R protein com- pared to IHH-C both in serum starved, and in serum stimulated cells. Abrogation of EGF-R signalling in IHH- Fos by treatment with AG1478, a specific EGF-R tyro- sine kinase inhibitor, prevented the phosphorylation of GsK-3β induced by serum stimulation and decreased Cyclin d1 stability in the nucleus. disseminated fusariosis in children is a rare and serious fungal infection, that occurs especially in neutropenic immunosuppressed patients, treated for malignant hemopathy, or bone marrow transplant recipient. Treatment is difficult and mortality is estimated between 50 and 70%in adult patients. Case report 1. -A ten-year-old boy, treated for an acute lymphoblastic leukemia in second relapse, presented a disseminated fusarium spp infection, that occurred during neutropenia. He died due to fusariosis infection in spite of amphotericin B treatment. Case report 2. -A ten-year-old neutropenic girl, treated for an acute myeld leukemia, presented disseminated fusariosis, uncontrolled by amphotericin B. Recovery was observed after voriconazole introduction and resolution of neutropenia. Ten months later, she presented a leukemia’s relapse, treated by new intensive chemotherapy with secondary prophylaxis by voriconazole, without fusariosis’s recurrence. Conclusion. -Voriconazole, a new triazole agent, seems to be an alternative antifungal agent to amphotericin B for disseminated fusarium infection, either at the acute phase or for secondary prophylaxis.

This study reports on the safety and putative probiotic properties of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens B-1895 and Bacillus subtilis KATmIRA1933. According to the bacterial reverse mutation (Ames) test, cell-free supernatants of B. amyloliquefaciens B-1895 and B. subtilis KATmIRA1933 were not mutagenic. The two strains co-aggregated with Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and cell-free supernatants inhibited the growth of streptococcus intermedius and Porphyromonas gingivalis. Endospores of B. amyloliquefaciens B-1895 and B. subtilis KATmIRA1933 were tolerant to 0.3% (w/v) bile salts and survived incubation for 4 h in mRs broth at pH 2.0 to 3.0. The ability of the two strains to produce antimicrobial compounds potentiates their application in health care formulations, personal care products, food and animal feed.

We report graphene films composed mostly of one or two layers of graphene grown by controlled carbon precipitation on the surface of polycrystalline Ni thin films during atmospheric chemical vapor deposition(CVd).Controlling both the methane concentration during CVd and the substrate cooling rate during graphene growth can signifi cantly improve the thickness *** a result,one-or two-layer graphene regions occupy up to 87%of the fi lm *** layer coverage accounts for 5%11%of the overall fi *** regions expand across multiple grain boundaries of the underlying polycrystalline Ni fi *** number density of sites with multilayer graphene/graphite(>2 layers)is reduced as the cooling rate *** fi lms can also be transferred to other substrates and their sizes are only limited by the sizes of the Ni fi lm and the CVd ***,we demonstrate the formation of fi lms as large as 1 in^(2).These fi ndings represent an important step towards the fabrication of large-scale high-quality graphene samples.

Clinical and epidemiologic variations of esophageal cancer in Tanzania

AIm: To estimate the incidence of esophageal cancer(EC) in Kilimanjaro in comparison to other regions in Tanzania. mETHOds: We also examined the clinical, epidemiologic, and geographic distribution of the 1332 EC patients diagnosed and/or treated at Ocean Road Cancer Institute(ORCI) during the period 2006-2013. medical records were used to abstract patient information on age, sex, residence, smoking status, alcohol consumption, tumor site, histopathologic type of tumor, date and place of diagnosis, and type and date of treatment at ORCI. Regional variation of EC patients was investigated at the level of the 26 administrative regions of Tanzania. Total, age- and sex-specific incidence rates were calculated. REsULTs: male patients 55 years and older had higher incidence of EC than female and younger patients. Of histopathologically-confirmed cases, squamous-cell carcinoma represented 90.9% of histopathologic types of tumors. The administrative regions in the central andeastern parts of Tanzania had higher incidence rates than western regions, specifically administrative regions of Kilimanjaro, dar es salaam, and Tanga had the highest rates. CONCLUsION: Further research should focus on investigating possible etiologic factors for EC in regions with high incidence in Tanzania.

Kinetics of the Chlorination of Copper （I） sulphide by Calcium Chloride in the Presence of Oxygen

The chemism of the chlorination of copper （I） sulphide by calcium chloride in the presence of oxygen has been determined based on the thermodynamic analysis in the Cu2s-CaCl2-O2 system as well as characterization of used raw materials and obtained products. The influence of temperature （from 473 to 773 K）, time （from 2 to 120 min）, oxygen flow （from 20 to 100 L/h） and calcium chloride quantity （from 5 to 40%） on the chlorination degree has been investigated. Kinetic analysis and the activation energy values of 20.89 kJ/mol showed that the chlorination of copper （I） sulphide by calcium chloride in the presence of oxygen is diffusion controlled.
