The results of experimental investigation of n-type semiconductor based on Bi2Te3 alloy were presented. This material is used in manufacture of thermoelectric coolers and electrical power generation devices. BizTe2.88Se0.12 solid solution single crystal has been grown using the Czochralski method. Monitoring of structure changes of the sample was carried out by electron microscope. The elemental composition of the studied alloy was obtained by energy dispersive spectrometry （EDS） analysis and empirical formula of the compound was established. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that the Bi2Te2.88Se0.12 sample was a single phase with rhombohedral structure. The behavior upon heating was studied using differential thermal analysis （DTA） technique. Changes in physical and chemical properties of materials were measured as a function of increasing temperature by thermogravimetric analysis （TGA）. The lattice parameters values obtained by X-ray powder diffraction analyses of Bi2Te2.88Se0.12 are very similar to BizTe3 lattice constants, indicating that a small portion of tellurium is replaced with selenium. The obtained values for specific electrical and thermal conductivities are in correlation with available literature data. The Vickers microhardness values are in range between HV 187 and HV 39.02 and decrease with load increasing. It is shown that very complex process of infrared thermography can be applied for characterization of thermoelectric elements and modules.

The thermodynamic properties and the microstructure, hardness and electrical conductivity of shape memory alloys （SMAs） belonging to ternary Cu？Al？Zn system were studied by Muggianu model and experiment, respectively. The isothermal section of phase diagram at 293 K was calculated using Thermo-Calc software. Experiments were conducted by X-ray diffraction, light optic microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, hardness and electrical conductivity measurements. The calculated values of thermodynamic properties indicate that Cu shows good miscibility with Al and Zn in all investigated alloys. The microstructural analysis of samples reveals that the structure consists of large and polygonal grains.

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate prognostic factors for survival in patients with advanced NSCLC who receiving second-line chemotherapy. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed data of 116 patients with NSCLC receiving second-line treatments from October 2010 to December 2012 in Clinic for Lung Diseases of Clinical center Nis, Department for Pulmonary Oncology. Thirteen potential prognostic factors were chosen for analysis. Univariate analysis was conducted to identify prognostic factors associated with progression free survival and overall survival. Multivariate analysis included the prognostic significance factors in univariate analysis. Results: The univariate analysis for progression free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) was identified to have prognostic significance: performance status, smoking, weight loss, comorbidity, number of meta localization, first-line chemotherapy regimen and response to first-line chemotherapy. Nevertheless, multivariate Cox prortional hazard regression analysis showed that performance status (PFS: p = 0.000, OS: p = 0.000) weight loss ≥ 5% (PFS: p = 0.000, OS: p = 0.002), comorbidity (PFS: p = 0.001, OS: p = 0.012) and four places of meta localization (PFS: p = 0.021, OS: p = 0.021) were considered independent prognostic factors for both, progression free survival and overall survival. Conclusion: Performance status, weight loss ≥ 5%, comorbidity and higher number of meta localization were identified as prognostic factors for survival in advanced NSCLC patients receiving second-line chemotherapy treatment. These findings may help pretreatment prediction of survival and may facilitate in the future integration new agents into second-line treatment.

Detection of gelatinase B activity in serum of gastric cancer patients

AIM： To determine the proteolytic activity and expression of gelatinase B in serum of gastric cancer patients and their correlation with the stage of the tumor. METHODS： Sera from 23 patients who underwent surgery for primary gastric cancer as the experimental group and from 11 as the control group were used to determine the proteolytic activity and its inhibition by EDTA and 1,10-phenanthroline. Gelatinase B activity was detected by SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis （SDS-PAGE） and SDS-PAGE zymography. RESULTS： Proteolytic enzyme activity was increased in gastric cancer patients when compared to the control group （,0〈0.05）. The proteinases were determined to be metalloproteinases upon inhibition test with specific metalloproteinase inhibitors 1,10-phenanthroline （P〈0.05） and EDTA （P〈0.01）. SDS-PAGE and SDS-PAGE zymography revealed gelatinase B （proMMP-9） activity and its molecular mass of 92 ku. CONCLUSION： Proteinase activity is overexpressed in serum of gastric cancer patients. Objective： To evaluate the effects of epicutaneous application of anticoagulant warfarin, by examining the presence of tissue injury and immune/inflammatory activity in exposed skin. Methods： Rats were exposed to warfarin by applying 10 μg of warfarin‐sodium to 10‐12 cm 2 skin （range 0.8‐1 μg per 1 cm 2 ） for 3 consecutive days. Tissue injury was evaluated by lipid peroxidation, histomorphological changes and signs of reparative activity in skin. T cell infiltration and selected aspects of epidermal cell activity were examined as indicators of immune/inflammatory skin response to warfarin application. Results： Repeated warfarin application exerted no effect on skin metabolic viability, but resulted in tissue injury （increased malondialdehyde, MDA, production, evident histo‐morphological changes in epidermis and dermis depicting cell injury and death）. Increased numbers of proliferating cell nuclear antigen （PCNA ＋） cells indicated reparative processes in injured skin. Infiltration of CD3 ＋ cells （T lymphocytes） along with the increased production of tumor necrosis factor‐α （TNF‐α） by epidermal cells from warfarin‐treated skin and their co‐stimulatory effect in an in vitro T‐cell activation assay demonstrated immunomodulatory effects of epicutaneous warfarin. Conclusion： Presented data have documented tissue damage associated with immune/ inflammatory activity in skin exposed to warfarin. Observed effects are relevant to immunotoxic potential of this anticoagulant in settings of external exposure.
