Advancing electrochemical drilling process via coupling of flow field and electric field in pulsating state generated by a novel tube tool

This paper introduces an improvement to electrochemical drilling process by coupling flow field and electric field in pulsating state. A novel tube with half-wedged shape at the end(HW-tube) is prepared, with both sidewall and wedged part of the HW-tube insulated. Only the flat part is utilized to provide electric field for electrochemical drilling. By rotating the HW-tube, both flow field and electric field in pulsating state are generated, alternating in different positions within the inter-electrode gap(IEG). The pulsating flow field enhances the mass transfer process, while pulsating electric field disperses material dissolution process and distribution of electrolytic byproducts. Both pulsating fields are coupled at the same frequency, further enhancing the electrochemical drilling process. Simulation results indicate that both flow field and electric field in pulsating state are generated. Compared to the traditional tube, the HW-tube significantly reduces the number of residual particles in IEG, and this number is further reduced by increasing the rotation speed. Experimental results reveal that the surface quality and dimensional uniformity of small hole are improved with HW-tube. With feed rate of 2.22 mm/min, a small hole with diameter of 1.52± 0.017 mm is drilled, resulting in a surface roughness of 0.331 μm.

Due to the depletion of conventional energy reserves,there has been a global shift towards non-conventional energy sources.Shale oil and gas have emerged as key alternatives.These resources have dense and heterogeneous reservoirs,which require hydraulic fracturing to extract.This process depends on identifying optimal fracturing layers,also known as‘sweet spots’.However,there is currently no uniform standard for locating these sweet spots.This paper presents a new model for evaluating fracturability that aims to address the current gap in the field.The model utilizes a hierarchical analysis approach and a mutation model,and is distinct in its use of original logging data to generate a fracturability evaluation map.Using this paper’s shale fracturing sweet spot evaluation method based on a two-step mutation model,four wells in different blocks of Fuling and Nanchuan Districts in China were validated,and the results showed that the proportion of high-yielding wells on the sweet spot line could reach 97.6%,while the proportion of low-producing wells was only 78.67%.Meanwhile,the evaluation results of the model were compared with the microseismic data,and the matching results were consistent.

Ensemble projections of climate and streamflow in a typical basin of semi-arid steppes in Mongolian Plateau of 2021-2100

The Kherlen River is the main water source for Hulun Lake,the largest lake in northern China.Due to reduced inflow from the Kherlen River,Hulun Lake experienced rapid shrinkage at the beginning of the 21st century,posing a serious threat to the ecological security of northern China.However,there is still a significant lack of projections regarding future climate change and its hydrological response in the Kherlen River basin.This study analyzed the projected climate and streamflow changes in the Kherlen River basin,a vital yet vulnerable international semi-arid steppes type basin.A combination of multi-model ensemble projection techniques,and the soil and water assessment tool(SWAT)model was employed to examine the spatio-temporal changes in precipitation,temperature,streamflow,and the associated uncertainties in the basin.The temperature(an increase of 1.84-6.42℃)and the precipitation(an increase of 15.0-46.0 mm)of Kherlen River basin are projected to increase by 2100,leading to a rise in streamflow(1.08-4.78 m^(3) s^(-1)).The upstream of the Kherlen River exhibits remarkable increasing trends in precipitation,which has a dominant influence on streamflow of Kherlen River.Noteworthy increases in streamflow are observed in April,August,September,and October compared to the reference period(1971-2000).These findings suggest a partial alleviation of water scarcity in the Kherlen River,but also an increased likelihood of hydrological extreme events.The projected temperature increase in the Kherlen River basin exhibits the smallest uncertainty,while more pronounced uncertainties are found in precipitation and streamflow.The spread among the results of CMIP6 models is greater than that of CMIP5 models,with lower signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)values for temperature,precipitation,and streamflow.

A coating strategy on titanium implants with enhanced photodynamic therapy and CO-based gas therapy for bacterial killing and inflammation regulation

Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy(aPDT)has been considered a noninvasive and effective modality against the bacterial infection of peri‑implantitis,especially the aPDT triggered by near-infrared(NIR)light due to the large penetration depth in tissue.However,the complexity of hypoxia microenvironments and the distance of aPDT sterilization still pose challenges before realizing the aPDT clinical application.Due to the long lifespan and transmission distance of therapeutic gas molecules,we design a multi-functional gas generator that combines aPDT as well as O_(2) and CO gas release function,which can solve the problem of hypoxia(O_(2))in PDT and the problem of inflammation regulation(CO)in the distal part of peri‑implant inflammation under near-infrared(NIR)irradiation.In the composite nanoplatform that spin-coated on the surface of titanium implants,up-conversion nanoparticles(UCNPs)were involved in converting the NIR to visible,which further excites the partially oxidized stannic sulfide(SnS_(2)),realizing the therapeutic gas release.Indocyanine green(ICG)was further integrated to enhance the aPDT performance(Ti-U@SnS_(2)/I).Therefore,reactive oxygen species(ROS),CO,and O_(2) can be controllably administered via a composite nano-platform mediated by a single NIR light(808 nm).This implant surface modification strategy could achieve great self-enhancement antibacterial effectiveness and regulate the lingering questions,such as relieving the anoxic microenvironment and reaching deep infection sites,providing a viable antibiotic-free technique to combat peri‑implantitis.

Background:Human immunodeficiency virus type 1(HIV-1)remains a persistent global health challenge.Therefore,a continuous exploration of novel therapeutic strategies is essential.A comprehensive understanding of how HIV-1 utilizes the cellular metabolism machinery for replication can provide insights into new therapeutic approaches.Methods:In this study,we performed a flux balance analysis using a genome-scale metabolic model(GEM)integrated with an HIV-1 viral biomass objective function to identify potential targets for anti–HIV-1 interventions.We generated a GEM by integrating an HIV-1 production reaction into CD4+T cells and optimized for both host and virus optimal states as objective functions to depict metabolic profiles of cells in the status for optimal host biomass maintenance or for optimal HIV-1 virion production.Differential analysis was used to predict biochemical reactions altered optimal for HIV-1 production.In addition,we conducted in silico simulations involving gene and reaction knock-outs to identify potential anti–HIV-1 targets,which were subsequently validated by human phytohemagglutinin(PHA)blasts infected with HIV-1.Results:Differential analysis identified several altered biochemical reactions,including increased lysine uptake and oxidative phosphorylation(OXPHOS)activities in the virus optima compared with the host optima.In silico gene and reaction knock-out simulations revealed de novo pyrimidine synthesis,and OXPHOS could serve as potential anti–HIV-1 metabolic targets.In vitro assay confirmed that targeting OXPHOS using metformin could suppress the replication of HIV-1 by 56.6%(385.4±67.5 pg/mL in the metformintreated group vs.888.4±32.3 pg/mL in the control group,P<0.001).Conclusion:Our integrated host-virus genome-scale metabolic study provides insights on potential targets(OXPHOS)for anti-HIV therapies.

An unprecedented synthesis of axially chiral biaryls by rearrangement and aromatization of carbocations with central-to-axial conversion of chirality

The central-to-axial chirality conversion represents a fascinating class of chemical processes consisting of the destruction of stereogenic centers and the simultaneous installation of axial chiral elements, which provides efficient methods for the preparation of axially chiral compounds. However, developing catalytic asymmetric approaches for constructing these central chirality precursors and the efficient central-to-axial chirality conversion remains a challenge due to the requirement of aromatization or elimination process. In this work, we have developed an unprecedented enantioselective intramolecular FriedelCrafts alkylation with unactivated-ketone carbonyls from which a chiral tertiary alcohol was generated with high efficiency and excellent enantioselectivity. In addition, the central-to-axial chirality conversion strategy has been successfully applied to the synthesis of enantioenriched biaryls via a less-explored carbocation-initiated rearrangement and aromatization under the promotion of Lewis acid. This methodology provided a straightforward and sustainable access to a broad range of biaryl-2-carboxylic acid and in excellent yields(up to 92%) and excellent central-to-axial chirality conversion(up to 99% conversion percentage). This work could be a great model for developing new methods for synthesizing axially chiral biaryls and a general protocol for the rearrangement and aromatization of carbocations for further functionalization.

Thermally conductive polymer nanocomposites integrated with lightweight,excellent flexural strength,and high fracture toughness(KIc)would be of great use in many fields.However,achieving all of these properties simultaneously remains a great challenge.Inspired by natural nacre,here we demonstrate a lightweight,strong,tough,and thermally conductive boron nitride nanosheet/epoxy layered(BNNEL)nanocomposite.Because of the layered structure and enhancing the interfacial interactions through hydrogen bonding and Si–O–B covalent bonding,the resulting nacre-inspired BNNEL nanocomposites show high fracture toughness of~4.22 MPa·m^(1/2),which is 7 folds as high as pure epoxy.Moreover,the BNNEL nanocomposites demonstrate sufficient flexural strength(~168.90 MPa,comparable to epoxy resin),while also being lightweight(~1.23 g/cm^(3)).Additionally,the BNNEL nanocomposites display a thermal conductivity(κ)of~0.47 W/(m·K)at low boron nitride nanosheet loading of 2.08 vol.%,which is 2.7 times higher than that of pure epoxy resin.The developed nacre-inspired strategy of layered structure design and interfacial enhancement provides an avenue for fabricating high mechanical properties and thermally conductive polymer nanocomposites.

Effect of multiple coulomb scattering on the beam tests of silicon pixel detectors

In the research and development of new silicon pixel detectors,a collimated monoenergetic charged-particle test beam equipped with a high-resolution pixel-beam telescope is crucial for prototype verification and performance evaluation.When the beam energy is low,the effect of multiple Coulomb scattering on the measured resolution of the Device Under Test(DUT)must be considered to accurately evaluate the performance of the pixel chips and detectors.This study aimed to investigate the effect of multiple Coulomb scattering on the measured resolution,particularly at low beam energies.Simulations were conducted using Allpix^(2) to study the effects of multiple Coulomb scattering under different beam energies,material budgets,and telescope layouts.The simulations also provided the minimum energy at which the effect of multiple Coulomb scattering could be ignored.Compared with the results of a five-layer detector system tested with an electron beam at DESY,the simulation results were consistent with the beam test results,confirming the reliability of the simulations.

Autoimmune hepatitis-primary biliary cholangitis overlap syndrome complicated by various autoimmune diseases:A case report

BACKGROUND Autoimmune hepatitis(AIH)and primary biliary cholangitis(PBC)are two common clinical autoimmune liver diseases,and some patients have both diseases;this feature is called AIH-PBC overlap syndrome.Autoimmune thyroid disease(AITD)is the most frequently overlapping extrahepatic autoimmune disease.Immunoglobulin(IgG)4-related disease is an autoimmune disease recognized in recent years,characterized by elevated serum IgG4 levels and infiltration of IgG4-positive plasma cells in tissues.CASE SUMMARY A 68-year-old female patient was admitted with a history of right upper quadrant pain,anorexia,and jaundice on physical examination.Laboratory examination revealed elevated liver enzymes,multiple positive autoantibodies associated with liver and thyroid disease,and imaging and biopsy suggestive of pancreatitis,hepatitis,and PBC.A diagnosis was made of a rare and complex overlap syndrome of AIH,PBC,AITD,and IgG4-related disease.Laboratory features improved on treatment with ursodeoxycholic acid,methylprednisolone,and azathioprine.CONCLUSION This case highlights the importance of screening patients with autoimmune diseases for related conditions.

The introduction of entropy concept into thermoelectric materials recently has attracted broad interest.Herein,we showed the phase diagram of the ternary systems of Bi2Se3-Sb2Se3-In2Se3.Among the high entropy compounds （HECs）,we have identified an intrinsic p-type region near our previously reported Bi0.8Sb0.8In0.4Se3in the phase diagram.
