Chinese Internet Searches Provide Inaccurate and Misleading Information to Epilepsy Patients

Background： Most patients with epilepsy want to learn as much as possible about the disease, and many have turned to the internet for information. Patients are likely to use information obtained from the internet to control their epilepsy, but little is known about the accuracy of this information. In this survey, we have assessed the feasibility and usability ofinternet-based interventions for the treatment of epilepsy. Methods： Data were collected from an internet search. Different search terms were used to obtain general information on epilepsy together with information about medication, types of epilepsy, treatment, women＇s health, and other information. The accuracy of the information was evaluated by a group of experts. Results： A total of 1320 web pages were assessed. The majority were websites related to health. A large number （80.2%） of web pages contained content related to the search term. A significant number of web pages 450/1058 （42.5%） claimed to provide information from a credible source： however, only 206/1058 （19.5%） of the information was accurate and complete; 326/1058 （30.8%） was accurate but incomplete; 328/1058 （31.0%） was correct but nonstandard, and 198/1058 （18.8%） was inaccurate. The authenticity of the information was not significantly different between the two search engines （x^2 = 0.009, P - 0.924）. No significant difference was observed in the information obtained from a specialist or nonspecialist source （x^2 = 7.538, P- 0.057）. There was also no correlation between the quality of the information and the priority （x^2 = 6.880, P = 0,076）. Conclusions： Searching for information about epilepsy on the internet is convenient, but the information provided is not reliable. Too much information is inaccurate or for advertisement purposes, and it is difficult for patients to find the useful information. Turning to the internet for medical knowledge may be harmful. Physicians should be aware that their patients may search for information on the internet and guide them to safe, reputable web

DIFFErenCES IN INTERICTAL PERFUSION PATTERNS BETWEEN REFRACTORY AND NON-REFRACTORY TEMPORAL LOBE EPILEPSIES EVALUATED WITH FAIR AT 3.0T

Objective To investigate the difference in interictal perfusion patterns between refractory and non-refractory temporal lobe epilepsies evaluated with flow-sensitive alternating inversion recovery (FAIR) magnetic resonance (MR) sequence. Methods Nine patients with refractory temporal lobe epilepsy, 21 patients with non-refractory temporal lobe epilepsy, and 13 normal volunteers underwent FAIR MR scanning. The relative cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in bilateral hemispheres and mesial temporal lobes were measured. And we also calculated the asymmetry index (AI) values. Results The AI values of bilateral hemispheres in refractory and non-refractory epilepsy patients were both significantly different from those of volunteers (P=0.012 and 0.029, respectively). There was significant difference in AI values of bilateral mesial temporal lobes between non-refractory epilepsy patients and volunteers (P=0.049), while no significant difference between refractory epilepsy patients and volunteers. Conclusions The hypoperfusion pattern of interictal refractory temporal lobe epilepsy patients is different from that of non-refractory patients. Although the hypoperfusion tends to extend out of temporal lobes in all patients, the refractory epilepsy patients have a preference of bilateral mesial temporal hypoperfusion, which may be valuable for evaluating prognosis.

METABOLIC ABNORMALITIES IN MESIAL TEMPORAL LOBE EPILEPSY PATIENTS DEPICTED BY PROTON MR SPECTROSCOPY USING A 3.0T MR SCANNER

Objective To evaluate metabolic abnormalities in patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) with proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) using a 3.0T MR scanner. Methods Sixty-three patients (32 women and 31 men) with diagnosed MTLE underwent diagnostic MR imaging (MRI) and proton MRS using a 3.0T MR scanner. The clinical history and interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) were recorded. Sixteen healthy volunteers served as control. The results of proton MRS were compared with the findings of electroencephalogram and structural MRI findings. Results Twenty-seven of the 63 patients with MTLE showed unilateral hippocampal sclerosis, and 9 showed bilateral hippocampal sclerosis. The concentration ratio of N-acytelaspartate (NAA)/ in the hippocampal region of MTLE patients (0.64±0.07) was significantly lower than control (0.80±0.05, P= 0.023). In the patients with unilateral hippocampal sclerosis, NAA/(Cr+Cho) in the hippocampal region ipsilateral to the sclerotic hippocampus (0.56±0.06) was significantly lower than the ratio in the contralateral hippocampal region (0.69±0.07, Prence in hippocampal NAA/(Cr+Cho) between the refractory patients and the non-refractory patients (0.64±0.05 vs. 0.71±0.07, P=0.04). Forty-five patients were lateralized by IEDs, while 49 patients were lateralized by metabolite ratio. And lateralization determined by proton MRS and IEDs was concordant in 33 patients. Conclusions MRS as a noninvasive tool adds helpful metabolite information to routine MRI in evaluation of MTLE. The method is well established and should be a routine clinical application in the investigation of epilepsy.

Selective immobilization of Pb(Ⅱ)by biogenic whewellite and its mechanism

The development of bio-adsorbents with highly selective immobilization properties for specific heavy metals is a great challenge,but has important application value.Biogenic whewellite(BW)with high selectivity for Pb(Ⅱ)was synthesized by mineral microbial transformation.The selective immobilization properties and mechanism of BW for Pb(Ⅱ)were analyzed by combining mineral characterization technology and batch adsorption research methods.The results indicated that BW can efficiently and selectively immobilize Pb(Ⅱ)in single or composite heavy metal adsorption solutions,and the immobilized Pb(Ⅱ)is difficult to desorb.BW undergoes monolayer adsorption on Pb(Ⅱ),Qmax≈1073.17 mg/g.The immobilization of Pb(Ⅱ)by BW is a physico-chemical adsorption process with spontaneous heat absorption and an accompanying increase in entropy.In addition,the sequestration of Pb(Ⅱ)by BW remains around 756.99 mg/g even at p H=1.The excellent selective immobilization properties of BW for Pb(Ⅱ)are closely related to its smaller Ksp,electrostatic repulsion effect,organic-inorganic composite structure,acid resistance and the formation of Pb(Ⅱ)oxalate.This study provides beneficial information about the recycling of lead in acidic lead-containing wastewater and composite heavy metal contaminated water bodies.

Bio-inspired macrostructure array(MAA,size:submillimeter to millimeter scale)materials with special wettability(MAAMs-SW)have attracted significant research attention due to their outstanding performance in many applications,including oil repellency,liquid/droplet manipulation,anti-icing,heat transfer,water collection,and oil–water separation.In this review,we focus on recent developments in the theory,design,fabrication,and application of bio-inspired MAAMs-SW.We first review the history of the basic theory of special wettability and discuss representative structures and corresponding functions of some biological surfaces,thus setting the stage for the design and fabrication of bio-inspired MAAMs-SW.We then summarize the fabrication methods of special wetting MAAs in terms of three categories:additive manufacturing,subtractive manufacturing,and formative manufacturing,as well as their diverse functional applications,providing insights into the development of these MAAMs-SW.Finally,the challenges and directions of future research on bio-inspired MAAMs-SW are briefy addressed.Worldwide efforts,progress,and breakthroughs from surface engineering to functional applications elaborated herein will promote the practical application of bio-inspired MAAMs-SW.

Photocatalysis driven by abundant yet intermittent solar energy has considerable potential in renewable energy generation and environmental remediation.The outstanding electronic structure and physicochemical properties of graphitic carbon nitride(g-C_(3)N_(4)),together with unique metal-free characteristic,make them ideal candidates for advanced photocatalysts construction.This review summarizes the up-to-date advances on g-C_(3)N_(4)based photocatalysts from ingenious-design strategies and diversified photocatalytic applications.Notably,the advantages,fabrication methods and limitations of each design strategy are systemically analyzed.In order to deeply comprehend the inner connection of theory–structure–performance upon g-C_(3)N_(4)based photocatalysts,structure/composition designs,corresponding photocatalytic activities and reaction mechanisms are jointly discussed,associated with introducing their photocatalytic applications toward water splitting,carbon dioxide/nitrogen reduction and pollutants degradation,etc.Finally,the current challenges and future perspectives for g-C_(3)N_(4)based materials for photocatalysis are briefly proposed.These design strategies and limitations are also instructive for constructing g-C_(3)N_(4) based materials in other energy and environment-related applications.

RebL1 is required for macronuclear structure stability and gametogenesis in Tetrahymena thermophila

Histone modification and nucleosome assembly play important roles in chromatin-related processes.Histone chaperones form different complexes and coordinate histone transportation and assembly.Various histone chaperone complexes have been identified in different organisms.The ciliate protozoa(ciliates)have various chromatin structures and different nuclear morphology.However,histone chaperone components and functions of different subunits remain unclear in ciliates.Tet-rahymema thermophila contains a transcriptionally active macronucleus(MAC)and a transcriptionally inactive micronu-cleus(MIC)which exhibit multiple replication and various chromatin remodeling progresses during vegetative growth and sexual developmental stages.Here,we found histone chaperone RebL1 not only localized evenly in the transcriptionally active MAC but also dynamically changed in the MIC during vegetative growth and sexual developmental stages.REBL1 knockdown inhibited cellular proliferation.The macronuclear morphology became bigger in growing mutants.The abnormal macronuclear structure also occurred in the starvation stage.Furthermore,micronuclear meiosis was disturbed during sexual development,leading to a failure to generate new gametic nuclei.RebL1 potentially interacted with various factors involved in histone-modifying complexes and chromatin remodeling complexes in different developmental stages.REBL1 knockdown affected expression levels of the genes involved in chromatin organization and transcription.Taken together,RebL1 plays a vital role in maintaining macronuclear structure stability and gametogenesis in T.thermophila.

Mixed D-vine copula-based conditional quantile model for stochastic monthly streamflow simulation

Copula functions have been widely used in stochastic simulation and prediction of streamflow.However,existing models are usually limited to single two-dimensional or three-dimensional copulas with the same bivariate block for all months.To address this limitation,this study developed a mixed D-vine copula-based conditional quantile model that can capture temporal correlations.This model can generate streamflow by selecting different historical streamflow variables as the conditions for different months and by exploiting the conditional quantile functions of streamflows in different months with mixed D-vine copulas.The up-to-down sequential method,which couples the maximum weight approach with the Akaike information criteria and the maximum likelihood approach,was used to determine the structures of multivariate Dvine copulas.The developed model was used in a case study to synthesize the monthly streamflow at the Tangnaihai hydrological station,the inflow control station of the Longyangxia Reservoir in the Yellow River Basin.The results showed that the developed model outperformed the commonly used bivariate copula model in terms of the performance in simulating the seasonality and interannual variability of streamflow.This model provides useful information for water-related natural hazard risk assessment and integrated water resources management and utilization.

Objective: Working memory（WM） is responsible for temporarily holding information available for processing. However, it is still unclear how the brain represents multiple objects presented simultaneously. The current study is to explore the underlying neural mechanisms of maintaining visual objects. Methods: We developed a novel visuospatial delayed match to sample task with three types of memory load, while controlling the effect of perceptual load. Scalp EEG and intracranial EEG recorded from refractory epileptic patients were used to investigate maintenance-related neural activity. Results: Behavior performance deteriorated severely with increasing memory load. The memory capacity estimated by Cowan’s K value first increased and then saturated at the load of 2, which was in consistence with the view that visual working memory was severely limited. Event related potentials（ERPs） analysis validated the effectiveness of controlling perceptual load. No load effect was observed during the first 320 ms perceptual period after sample onset, which contained the evoked response components P1 and N1. For the recorded local field potentials（LFPs）, time-frequency decomposition was performed for each channel. We found that high-gamma activation increased mainly in frontal, parietal and lateral occipital cortex, indicating a distributed working memory circuit. Moreover, high-gamma activity did not increase monotonically with memory load increasing, implying a sensible neural basis of the limited memory capacity. In addition, compared with baseline activity, there were significantly increased neural activities during the delay period, even though cognitive load exceeded the capacity（i.e. at the load 4）. Conclusion: this study may provide neural evidence for resource model of working memory, rather than the classical slot model.

Experimental Study on Vortex-Induced Vibration of Rough Risers Coupling with Interference Effect in Tandem Arrangement

In order to study the response law of vortex-induced vibration(VIV)of marine risers under the combined action of roughness and interference effects,and to reveal the coupling mechanism of roughness and interference effects on the riser,a VIV experiment of rough risers in tandem arrangement was conducted in a wave−current combined flume.The experiment characterized the risers’roughness by arranging different specifications of attachments on the surface of the risers.Three rough risers with different roughness and smooth risers were arranged in tandem arrangement,with the rough risers arranged downstream.The experimental results indicate that the suppression of the attachments on the downstream risers’vibration are more significant both in the CF and IL directions as the reduced velocity increases.For the downstream riser,the amplitude response of rough riser is more significantly weakened compared with the smooth one at high reduced velocity.For the upstream risers,changes in the roughness and spacing ratio have an impact on their‘lock-in’region.When the roughness of downstream risers is relatively large(0.1300)and the spacing between risers is small(S/D=4.0),the reduced velocity range of‘lock-in’region in the CF direction of upstream risers is obviously expanded,and the displacement in the‘lock-in’region is severer.
