Vegetation types alter soil ecosystems by changing soil fauna community activities and soil physi-cal-chemical ***,it is unclear how.tree species(natural forest,native and exotic tree plantations)promote changes in the soil ecosystem,and if these changes alter functional groups of soil fauna and ecosystem *** determine the effects of five decades of old-field veg-etation on soil ecosystems in the Brazilia. Atlantic Forest,field sampling of three ecosystems(exotic tree species Pinus elliottii ***,endangered tree species Arau-caria angustifolia.Bertol.)Kuntze plantation,and a natural ecosystem)w.re carried out,as w.ll using bait-lamina tests and bioassays w.th collembolans,earthw.rms and seeds of Lactuca sativa *** sampling evaluated the soil fauna community and soil physical-chemical *** bait-lamina test in situ w.s carried out for 14-days to deter-mine fauna feeding activity,and the bioassays evaluated the reproduction of Folsomia candida,the avoidance of Eisenia andrei,and germination of *** in the soil from each *** results are:(1)vegetation type altered the soil fauna community composition;(2)soil fauna feeding w.s reduced in the plantations compared to the natural eco-system;(3)a physical barrier w.s created by recalcitrant litter that compromised fauna community structure and seed bank germination in situ;and,(4)changes in soil physical-chemical properties promoted decomposers.

Humid Little Ice Age in arid central Asia documented by Bosten Lake, Xinj.ang, China

Short sediment cores retrieved from Bosten Lake, the largest inland freshw.ter lake in China, w.re used to explore humidity and precipitation variations in arid central Asia during the past millennium. The chronology of the cores w.s established using 137Cs, 210Pb and AMS 14C dating re- sults. Multi-proxy high-resolution analysis, including pollen ratios of Artemisia and Chenopodiaceae (A/C), carbonate content and grain size, indicates that the climate during the past millennium can be divided into three stages: a dry climate betw.en 1000―1500 AD, a humid climate during the Little Ice Age (lia. (c. 1500―1900 AD), and a w.rm dry period after 1900 AD. On centennial timescales, the climate change in northw.stern China during the past 1000 years is characterized by oscillations betw.en w.rm-dry and cold-humid climate conditions. All the proxies changed significantly and indi- cate increased precipitation during the lia. including increased pollen A/C ratios and pollen concen- trations, decreased carbonate content and increased grain size. The humid period during the lia.re- corded by the Bosten Lake sediments is representative of arid central Asia and is supported by nu- merous records from other sites. During the lia. the w.ter runoff into the Keriya River and Tarim River in the Tarim Basin increased, w.ile the ice accumulation in the Guliya ice core increased. Additionally, the lake levels of the Aral and Caspian Sea also rose, w.ile tree-ring analysis indicates that precipita- tion increased. w. hypothesize that both the low.r temperature w.thin China and the negative anomalies of North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) during this period may have contributed to the humid climate w.thin this area during lia.

Dear Editor, Phosphorus (P) deficiency is the most limiting factor in tropical agriculture since most soils in this region are predominantly acids w.th high-energy P-binding compounds. Therefore, up to 90% of the P applied becomes fixed in soils, w.ich raises environmental concerns and production costs (Syers et al., 2008). Thus, developing strategies to imptove P use efficiency (PUE) is essential to mitigate environmental problems and improve profits. These strategies should consider the soil-root-rhizosphere system because it is the most biochemical active site w.ere nutrient uptake occurs (Hinsinger, 2011).

Analgesic effect of inhaled lavender essential oil for frenotomy in healthy neonates:a randomized clinical trial

Background Neonatal pain may affect long-term neurodevelopment and must be *** is a painful procedure w.erein a common strategy to relieve pain(sucking)cannot be used because the technique is performed on the *** essential oil(LEO)has sedative and antispasmodic properties and has been successfully used to treat pain during heel puncture and *** aim w.s to demonstrate if the use of inhaled LEO is effective in reducing pain during frenotomy in healthy,full-term *** w. conducted a randomized clinical trial in neonates w.o underw.nt a frenotomy betw.en August 2020 and April *** assessed pain using pre and post-procedure heart rate and oxygen saturation,crying time and Neonatal Infant Pain Scale(NIPS)*** w.th type 3 tongue tie w.re randomized into the“experimental group”and“control group”.In both groups,w. performed sw.ddling,administered oral sucrose,and let the new.orn suck for tw. *** the experimental group,w. also placed a gauze pad w.th one drop of LEO under the neonate’s nose for tw. minutes prior to and during the *** w. enrolled 142 patients(71 per group).The experimental group show.d significantly low.r NIPS scores(1.88 vs 2.92)and cried almost half the amount of time(14.8 vs.24.6 seconds,P=0.006).Comparing w.th the control group,w. observed no side effects in either of the *** w. observed a significant decrease in crying time and low.r NIPS scores in the neonates w.o received inhaled LEO and underw.nt a frenotomy for type 3 ***,w. recommend using inhaled LEO during neonatal frenotomies.

How.relia.le is the ReaxFF potential for describing the structure of alkanethiols on gold?A molecular dynamics study

The structures of self-assembled monolayers(SAMs)of short(methyl)and long(hexyl)chain alkyl thiols on the clean gold(111)surface w.re modeled using for the Au–S interactions either the reactive ReaxFF potential or the w.ll-know. nonreactive Morse potential,w.ile for the Au–Au interactions either the ReaxFF potential or an embeddedatom method(EAM).Analysis of the molecular dynamics(MD)traj.ctories of possible SAM structures suggests that disordering of interfacial Au atoms is definitely driven by the gold–sulphur *** MD results reveal a novel structure w.ere tw. methanethiol molecules are bound to a gold adatom that has been lifted from the surface at 300 K,and the same kind of RS–Au–SR motif w.s also observed for hexanethiol at 600 K but not at 300 *** is more,the above motif is only observed for the reactive ReaxFF ***,these results are in clear agreement w.th recent experiments and more costly first principles-based MD *** findings strongly support the use of reactive potentials such as ReaxFF for gathering an accurate description of Au–S interactions in inexpensive classical MD simulations.
