Extracellular vesicles(EVs)are anuclear particles composed of lipid bilayers that contain nucleic acids,proteins,lipids,and organelles.EVs act as an important mediator of cell-to-cell communication by transmitting biological signals or components,including lipids,proteins,messenger RNAs,DNA,microRNAs,organelles,etc,to nearby or distant target cells to activate and regulate the function and phenotype of target cells.Under physiological conditions,EVs play an essential role in maintaining the homeostasis of the pulmonary milieu but they can also be involved in promoting the pathogenesis and progression of various respiratory diseases including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,asthma,acute lung injury/acute respiratory distress syndrome,idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis(IPF),and pulmonary artery hypertension.In addition,in multiple preclinical studies,EVs derived from mesenchymal stem cells(EVs)have shown promising therapeutic effects on reducing and repairing lung injuries.Furthermore,in recent years,researchers have explored different methods for modifying EVs or enhancing EVs-mediated drug delivery to produce more targeted and beneficial effects.This article will review the characteristics and biogenesis of EVs and their role in lung homeostasis and various acute and chronic lung diseases and the potential therapeutic application of EVs in the field of clinical medicine.

For pulse-width modulated(PWM)DC-DC converters,the input voltage fluctuation and load variation in practical applications make it necessary for them to have better dynamic performance to meet the regulation requirements of the system.The dynamic-performance-improvement method for PWM DC-DC converters is mainly based on indirect dynamic performance indices,such as the gain margin and phase margin.However,both settling time and overshoot in the time domain are important in practical engineering.This makes it difficult for designers to obtain a clear understanding of the time-domain dynamic performance that can be achieved with improved control.In this study,a direct analysis of the time-domain dynamic characteristic of PWM DC-DC converters is performed.A dynamic-performance-improvement method based on eigenvalues and eigenvector sensitivity(E2S-based DPIM)is proposed to directly improve the time-domain dynamic performance index of PWM DC-DC converters.By considering a boost converter with proportional-integral control as an example,an additional virtual inductor current feedback control was designed using the proposed dynamic-performance-improvement method.Simulation and experimental results verify the validity and accuracy of the proposed dynamic-performance-improvement method.

To the Editor:Retinoblastoma(RB)is the most common primary malignant intra-ocular tumor in children.It is thought to be initiated in response to biallelic RB1 inactivation and loss of functional RB protein.Spleen tyrosine kinase(SYK)plays different roles in the regulation of immunomodulatory signaling and cell proliferation in multiple malignancies,indicating either poor or favorable prognosis.A previous study showed that SYK is the fifth most significant gene and the only up-regulated kinase gene in RB according to the results derived from whole-genome sequencing,and SYK is also required for tumor cell survival.[1]However,the specific role of SYK in RB is still poorly understood.In this study,we examined SYK expression in RB and analyzed its relevance to necrosis and histopathologic high-risk factors(HRFs).

Developing electrochemical energy storage devices with high energy and power densities,long cycling life,as well as low cost is of great significance.Hybrid metal-ion capacitors(MICs),commonly consisting of high energy battery-type anodes and high power capacitor-type cathodes,have become a trade-off between batteries and supercapacitors.Tremendous efforts have been devoted to searching for high-performance electrode materials due to poor rate capability of anodes,low capacity of cathodes,and interior sluggish kinetic match.Carbon materials with large surface area,good electrical conductivity and stability have been considered to be ideal candidates for electrodes of MICs.In this review,the advanced carbon materials directly as cathodes and anodes of MICs are systematically summarized.Then,the key structural/chemical factors including the structure engineering,porous characteristics,and heteroatom incorporation for improving electrochemical performance of carbon materials are highlighted.Additionally,the challenges and opportunities for future research on carbon materials in MICs are also proposed.

Silicon nanowire field-effect transistor(SiNW-FET)sensors possess the ability of rapid response,real-time,and label-free detection with high sensitivity and selectivity in the analysis of charged molecules.Their nano-scale size makes them well suited for ultralow detection of charged molecules,but also brings the uniformity fabrication challenging,thus limiting their large-scale application.By a horizontal control approach,highly controllable silicon nanowires arrays at the top of the silicon-on-insulator(SOI)wafer(T-SiNW)were developed in our previous work.To further improve the device uniformity,here a novel SiNW fabricated approach was carefully designed by the combination of horizontal and vertical control.The new silicon nanowires appeared at the bottom of the top silicon layer(B-SiNW).The B-SiNW has a relatively low requirement on the fabrication process and better device uniformity compared to T-SiNW.These improvements resulted in the B-SiNW device with a lower current fluctuation(4.1 nA with 5.1%variations)in the flowing liquid,compared to the T-SiNW device(4.4 nA with 11%variations).Further,in quantitative detection of 40 ng/mL MMP-9,the B-SiNW sensors provided larger signals and lower fluctuation(normalized average response value:0.57 with 4.2%variations),compared to the T-SiNW sensors(0.41 with 12.1%variations),thus indicating a more accurate bio-analysis application of the B-SiNW sensor.This work advances the nanowire sensor technology a step closer toward large-scale application to create stable sensing platforms in disease diagnosis and monitoring.

Effects of Cataract Surgery on Endothelium in Transplanted Corneal Grafts： Comparison of Extracapsular Cataract Extraction and Phacoemulsification for Complicated Cataract after Penetrating Keratoplasty

Background： The endothelium should be carefully evaluated when choosing a surgical technique for cataract removal. Therefore, we aimed to study the effects of different cataract surgery techniques on endothelial cell loss in transplanted corneal grafts. Methods： A total of 54 patients who received complicated cataract surgery in post-penetrating keratoplasty （PKP） eyes at the Shandong Eye Institute between February 2001 and June 2014 were included, and clinical records were reviewed. Baseline demographic details, clinical characteristics, endothelial cell density （ECD）, and best-corrected visual acuity （BCVA） were recorded. Wilcoxon rank-sum test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test were used to test the equality of medians. A regression model was constructed to compare the reduced rate of ECD. Results： Of the 54 eyes included in this study, extracapsular cataract extraction （ECCE） was performed in 34 eyes of 33 patients （ECCE group） whereas phacoemulsification was performed in 20 eyes of 20 patients （phacoemulsification group）. There was no signifcant difference in the median age （P = 0.081） or preoperative ECD （P = 0.585） between the two groups. At 6 months after cataract surgery, ECD in ECCE group was significantly higher than that in phacoemulsification group （P = 0.043）. In addition, the endothelial cell loss rate in ECCE group was significantly lower than that in phacoemulsification group at 2 months （P = 0.018）, 4 months （P 〈 0.001）, and 6 months （P 〈 0.001） after cataract surgery. Endothelial cell loss rate after cataract surgery increased over the 6-month study duration in both ECCE group （P 〈 0.001） and phacoemulsification group （P 〈 0.001）, but phacoemulsification resulted in a greater reduction in ECD than that of ECCE in transplanted corneal grafts （P 〈 0.001）. There was no signifcant difference in postoperative BCVA between the two groups （P = 0.065）. Conclusion： ECCE is more suitable than phacoemulsification in cataract surgery in complicated cataract after PKP.

litsea,a non-monophyletic group of the tribe Laureae(Lauraceae),plays important roles in the tropical and subtropical forests of Asia,Australia,Central and North America,and the islands of the Pacific.However,intergeneric relationships between litsea and Laurus,lindera,Parasassafras and Sinosassafras of the tribe Laureae remain unresolved.In this study,we present phylogenetic analyses of seven newly sequenced litsea plastomes,together with 47 Laureae plastomes obtained from public databases,representing six genera of the Laureae.Our results highlight two highly supported monophyletic groups of litsea taxa.One is composed of 16 litsea taxa and two lindera taxa.The 18 plastomes of these taxa were further compared for their gene structure,codon usage,contraction and expansion of inverted repeats,sequence repeats,divergence hotspots,and gene evolution.The complete plastome size of newly sequenced taxa varied between 152,377 bp(litsea auriculata)and 154,117 bp(litsea pierrei).Seven of the 16 litsea plastomes have a pair of insertions in the IRa(trnL-trnH)and IRb(ycf2)regions.The 18 plastomes of litsea and lindera taxa exhibit similar gene features,codon usage,oligonucleotide repeats,and inverted repeat dynamics.The codons with the highest frequency among these taxa favored A/T endings and each of these plastomes had nine divergence hotspots,which are located in the same regions.We also identified six protein coding genes(accD,ndhJ,rbcL,rpoC2,ycf1 and ycf2)under positive selection in litsea;these genes may play important roles in adaptation of litsea species to various environments.

The stability of the surrounding rocks of large underground powerhouses is always emphasized during the construction process,especially in large-scale underground projects under construction,such as the Baihetan hydropower station in China.According to field investigations,numerical simulations and monitoring data analysis,we present a comparative analysis of the deformation and failure characteristics of the surrounding rocks of underground powerhouses on the left and right banks of the Baihetan hydropower station.The failure characteristics and deformation magnitude of the underground powerhouses on the left and right banks are quite different.Under the disadvantageous condition where the maximum principal stress intersects the axis of the powerhouse at a large angle,the left bank underground powerhouse shows prominent stress-controlled failure characteristics such as spalling,slack collapse and concrete cracking.Although the maximum principal stress is in the favorable condition which intersects the right bank powerhouse at a small angle,the relatively high intermediate principal stress with an angle subvertical to the right bank powerhouse plays an essential role in its deformation and failure,indicating that the influence of high intermediate principal stress cannot be ignored.In addition,structural plane-controlled failure and large deformation are also more evident on the right bank due to the extensive distribution of weak structural planes and complex surrounding rock properties.
