Predator-prey encounters:deciphering the robbery relationship between highwayman flies and their ant victims

Examples of predator–prey interactions in which flies rob ants are uncommon.To date,this behavior has only been recorded in the genus Bengalia Robineau-Desvoidy(Bengaliinae,Diptera,Calliphoridae).These predatory flies ambush ants,and rob them of the food or offspring that they are carrying.However,because of the rarity of this behavior,the reasons and consequences(evolutionary advantages)are unknown,and indeed,the behavior has been sometimes considered anecdotal.In this study,we employed field investigations and behavioral analyses to investigate whether the sex of the fly Bengalia varicolor,or the weight and quality of the food carried by Pheidole nodus ants influenced fly–ant interactions in their natural habitats.We show that food weight and quality influenced the behavior of B.varicolor independent of the fly’s sex.Robbing behavior by the flies was more successful when the food robbed was of high-quality and light in weight.Furthermore,the weight of the food robbed modulated the escape distance the flies could carry it.This then may affect the food quality and weight transported by the ants.This is a novel example of deciphering the relationship between highwayman flies and their ant victims.Given the widespread distribution of Bengalia flies,we suggest that such interspecific predator–prey encounters may shape the robbery interactions and the carrying behavior of further ant species in nature.

Quantification of perfluorinated compounds in atmospheric particulate shows potential connection with environmental event

A method of quantification of perfluorinated compounds(PFCs)from atmospheric particulate matter(APM)is described.A single step pretreatment method,selective pressurized liquid extraction(SPLE),was developed to reduce the high matrix background and avoid contamination from commonly used multiple sample pretreatment steps.An effective sorbent was selected to purify the PFCs during SPLE,followed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry(LC–MS/MS),for quantification of PFCs.Conditions affecting the SPLE efficiency,including temperature,static extraction time,and number of extraction cycles used,were studied.The optimum conditions were found to be 120℃,10 min,and 3 cycles,respectively.LC-MS/MS method was developed to obtain the optimal sensitivity specific to PFCs.The method detection limits(MDLs)were 0.006 to 0.48 ng/g for the PFCs studied and the linear response range was from 0.1 to 100 ng/g.To ensure accurate values were obtained,each step of the experiment was evaluated and controlled to prevent contamination.The optimized method was tested by performing spiking experiments in natural particulate matter matrices and good rates of recovery and reproducibility were obtained for all target compounds.Finally,the method was successfully used to measure 16 PFCs in the APM samples collected in Beijing over five years from 2015 to 2019.It is observed that some PFCs follow the trend of total PFC changes,and can be attributed to the environment influencing events and policy enforcement,while others don't seem to change as much with time of the year or from year to year.

Deep3DSketch-im:rapid high-fidelity AI 3D model generation by single freehand sketches

The rise of artificial intelligence generated content(AIGC)has been remarkable in the language and image fields,but artificial intelligence(AI)generated three-dimensional(3D)models are still under-explored due to their complex nature and lack of training data.The conventional approach of creating 3D content through computer-aided design(CAD)is labor-intensive and requires expertise,making it challenging for novice users.To address this issue,we propose a sketch-based 3D modeling approach,Deep3DSketch-im,which uses a single freehand sketch for modeling.This is a challenging task due to the sparsity and ambiguity.Deep3DSketch-im uses a novel data representation called the signed distance field(SDF)to improve the sketch-to-3D model process by incorporating an implicit continuous field instead of voxel or points,and a specially designed neural network that can capture point and local features.Extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach,achieving state-of-the-art(SOTA)performance on both synthetic and real datasets.Additionally,users show more satisfaction with results generated by Deep3DSketch-im,as reported in a user study.We believe that Deep3DSketch-im has the potential to revolutionize the process of 3D modeling by providing an intuitive and easy-to-use solution for novice users.

Numerical Investigation on Heat Transfer Characteristics of Microencapsulated Phase Change Material Slurry in a Rectangular Minichannel

Microencapsulation phase change material slurry(MEPCMS) becomes a potential working fluid for cooling high energy density miniaturized components,thanks to the latent heat absorption of particles in the heat transfer process.In this work,the Discrete Phase Model(DPM) based on the Euler-Lagrangian method is used to numerically investigate the convective heat transfer characteristics of MEPCMS flowing through a rectangular minichannel with constant heat flux.The results show that particles of MEPCMS are mainly subjected to drag force during the flow.Even so,they can migrate from the high-temperature region to the low-temperature region driven by the thermophoretic force,affecting the particle distribution and phase change process.Moreover,the Nux of the MEPCMS fluctuates due to particle phase change with varying specific heat capacities.Specifically,the value increases first,then decreases,and eventually increases again until it approaches the fully developed value of the pure base fluid as the particles gradually melt.Furthermore,the heat transfer performance of the MEPCMS is influenced by the combination of fluid inlet temperature fluid inlet velocity(v),and mass concentration(c_(m)) of MEPCM particles.The result shows that the maximum reduction of the maximum bottom wall temperature difference(ΔT_(w)) is 23.98% at T_(in)=293.15 K,v=0.15 m·s^(-1),c_(m)=10%.

Effect of short neuropeptide F signaling on larval feeding in Mythimna separata

Mythimna separata is a notorious phytophagous pest which poses serious threats to cereal crops owing to the gluttony of the larvae.Because short neuropeptide F(sNPF)and its receptor sNPFR are involved in a diversity of physiological functions,especially in functions related to feeding in insects,it is a molecular target for pest control.Herein,an sNPF and 2 sNPFRs were identified and cloned from M.separata.Bioinformatics analysis revealed that the sNPF and its receptors had a highly conserved RLRFamide C-terminus and 7 transmembrane domains,respectively.The sNPF and its receptor genes were distributed across larval periods and tissues,but 2 receptors had distinct expression patterns.The starvation-induced assay elucidated that sNPF and sNPFR expression levels were downregulated under food deprivation and recovered with subsequent re-feeding.RNA interference knockdown of sNPF,sNPFR1,and sNPFR2 by injection of double-stranded RNA into larvae not only suppressed food consumption and increased body size and weight,but also led to decrease of glycogen and total lipid contents,and increase of trehalose compared with double-stranded green fluorescent protein injection.Furthermore,molecular docking was performed on the interaction mode between sNPFR protein and its ligand sNPF based on the 3-dimensional models constructed by AlphaFold;the results indicated that both receptors were presumably activated by the mature peptide sNPF-2.These results revealed that sNPF signaling played a considerably vital role in the feeding regulation of M.separata and represents a potential control target for this pest.

Efficient nitrite-to-ammonia electroreduction over Zr-Ni frustrated Lewis acid-base pairs

Electrochemical NO_(2)~--to-NH_(3) conversion(NO_(2)RR) offers a green route to NH_(3) electrosynthesis, while developing efficient NO_(2)RR catalysis systems at high current densities remains a grand challenge. Herein, we report an efficient Zr-NiO catalyst with atomically dispersed Zr-dopants incorporated in NiO lattice, delivering the exceptional NO_(2)RR performance with industriallevel current density(>0.2 A cm^(-2)). In situ spectroscopic measurements and theoretical simulations reveal the construction of ZrNi frustrated Lewis acid-base pairs(FLPs) on Zr-Ni O, which can substantially increase the number of absorbed nitrite(NO_(2)~-),promote the activation and protonation of NO_(2)~- and concurrently hamper the H coverage, boosting the activity and selectivity of Zr-NiO towards the NO_(2)RR. Remarkably, Zr-NiO exhibits the exceptional performance in a flow cell with high Faradaic efficiency for NH_(3) of 94.0% and NH_(3)yield rate of 1,394.1 μmol h^(-1)cm^(-2) at an industrial-level current density of 228.2 m A cm^(-2),placing it among the best NO_(2)RR electrocatalysts for NH_(3) production.

Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor drugs combined with laser photocoagulation maintain retinal ganglion cell integrity in patients with diabetic macular edema: study protocol for a prospective, non-randomized, controlled clinical trial

The integrity of retinal ganglion cells is tightly associated with diabetic macular degeneration that leads to damage and death of retinal ganglion cells,affecting vision.The major clinical treatments for diabetic macular edema are anti-vascular endothelial growth factor drugs and laser photocoagulation.However,although the macular thickness can be normalized with each of these two therapies used alone,the vision does not improve in many patients.This might result from the incomplete recovery of retinal ganglion cell injury.Therefore,a prospective,non-randomized,controlled clinical trial was designed to investigate the effect of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor drugs combined with laser photocoagulation on the integrity of retinal ganglion cells in patients with diabetic macular edema and its relationship with vision recovery.In this trial,150 patients with diabetic macular edema will be equally divided into three groups according to therapeutic methods,followed by treatment with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor drugs,laser photocoagulation therapy,and their combination.All patients will be followed up for 12 months.The primary outcome measure is retinal ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer thickness at 12 months after treatment.The secondary outcome measures include retinal ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer thickness before and 1,3,6,and 9 months after treatment,retinal nerve fiber layer thickness,best-corrected visual acuity,macular area thickness,and choroidal thickness before and 1,3,6,9,and 12 months after treatment.Safety measure is the incidence of adverse events at 1,3,6,9,and 12 months after treatment.The study protocol hopes to validate the better efficacy and safety of the combined treatment in patients with diabetic macula compared with the other two monotherapies alone during the 12-month follow-up period.The trial is designed to focus on clarifying the time-effect relationship between imaging measures related to the integrity of retinal ganglion cells and best-corrected visual acuity.

Towards accurate mapping of loess waterworn gully by integrating google earth imagery and DEM using deep learning

Accurate mapping of loess waterworn gully(LWG)is essential to further study gully erosion and geomorphological evolution for the Chinese Loess Plateau(CLP).Due to the vertical joint and collapsibility of loess,LWGs have the characteristics of zigzag and unique slope abruptness under synthetic action of hydraulic force and gravity.This forces existing LWG mapping methods to either focus on the improvement of mapping accuracy or center on the increase of mapping efficiency.However,simultaneously achieving accurate and efficient mapping of LWG is still in its infancy under complex topographic conditions.Here,we proposed a method that innovatively integrates the loess slope abruptness feature into an improved deep learning semantic segmentation framework for LWG mapping using 0.6 m Google imagery and 5 m DEM data.We selected four study areas representing typical loess landforms to test the performance of our method.The proposed method can achieve satisfactory mapping results,with the F1 score,mean Intersection-over-Union(mIoU),and overall accuracy of 90.5%,85.3%,and 92.3%,respectively.In addition,the proposed model also showed significant accuracy improvement by inputting additional topographic information(especially the slope of slope).Compared with existing algorithms(Random forests,original DeepLabV3+,and Unet),the proposed approach in this study achieved a better accuracy-efficiency trade-off.Overall,the method can ensure high accuracy and efficiency of the LWG mapping for different loess landform types and can be extended to study various loess gully mapping and water and soil conservation.

Thermofluidic investigations of oil natural transformer:Closed-loop modelling and experimental validation

Excessively high temperatures inside a power transformer can accelerate the ageing rate and even cause unplanned outages.Accurately estimating the hot-spot temperature(HST)of a power transformer is important for regulating the load and ensuring long-term operation.In this study,a closed-loop model of a 110-kV product transformer with an oil natural/air forced(ONAF)cooling mode is built to predict HST,in which the compression ratio of windings,equivalent heat source and radiator geometry are considered.According to the flow field of the winding,the‘dead oil zone’and reverse oil flow are observed in the horizontal oil channels.The accuracy of the proposed model is experimentally validated by temperature-rise tests.The results show that the absolute errors between the measured results and simulation are below 5°C,and the average error is~2°C.Furthermore,the arrangements of windings and radiators are studied to enhance the oil circulation.By adding 5 washers to the high-voltage winding,the average temperature can be decreased by 6°C compared with the case without a washer.Elevating the radiator can also mitigate the characteristic temperatures,and the optimal height difference between the radiator and winding centre is suggested to be 0.66 m.

Fluorescence imaging in the second near-infrared window(NIR-II,900–1880 nm)with less scattering background in biological tissues has been combined with the confocal microscopic system for achieving deep in vivo imaging with high spatial resolution.However,the traditional NIR-IIfluorescence confocal microscope with separate excitation focus and detection pinhole makes it possess low confocal e±ciency,as well as di±cultly to adjust.Two types of upgraded NIR-IIfluorescence confocal microscopes,sharing the same pinhole by excitation and emission focus,leading to higher confocal e±ciency,are built in this work.One type is-ber-pinhole-based confocal microscope applicable to CW laser excitation.It is constructed forfluorescence intensity imaging with large depth,high stabilization and low cost,which could replace multiphotonfluorescence microscopy in some applications(e.g.,cerebrovascular and hepatocellular imaging).The other type is air-pinhole-based confocal microscope applicable to femtosecond(fs)laser excitation.It can be employed not only for NIR-IIfluorescence intensity imaging,but also for multi-channelfluorescence lifetime imaging to recognize different structures with similarfluorescence spectrum.Moreover,it can be facilely combined with multiphotonfluorescence microscopy.A single fs pulsed laser is utilized to achieve up-conversion(visible multiphotonfluorescence)and down-conversion(NIR-II one-photonfluorescence)excitation simultaneously,extending imaging spectral channels,and thus facilitates multi-structure and multi-functional observation.
