AIM To compare health-related quality of life(HrQoL),anxiety, depression, and impulsivity scores in patients with and without carcinoid syndrome(CS), and correlated them with serum 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid(5-HIAA) *** Patients with advanced gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumours(GEPNET), with and without CS completed HrQoL QLQ-C30 and ***21, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale(HADS) and Barratt Impulsivity Scale(BIS) questionnaires. Twosample Wilcoxon test was applied to assess differences in serum 5-HIAA levels, two-sample Mann-Whitney U test for HrQoL and BIS, and proportion test for HADS, between those with and without *** Fifty patients were included; 25 each with and without CS. Median 5-HIAA in patients with and without CS was 367 nmol/L and 86 nmol/L, respectively(P = 0.003). Scores related to endocrine symptoms were significantly higher amongst patients with CS(P = 0.04) and scores for disease-related worries approached significance in the group without CS, but no other statistically-significant differences were reported between patients with and without CS in responses on QLQ-C30 or ***21. Fifteen patients(26%) scored ≥ 8/21 on anxiety scale, and 6(12%) scored ≥ 8/21 on depression scale. There was no difference in median 5-HIAA between those scoring r ≥ 8/21 on anxiety scale(P = 0.53). There were no statistically significant differences between groups in first or second-order factors(BIS) or total sum(P = 0.23).CONCLUSION Excepting endocrine symptoms, there were no significant differences in HrQoL, anxiety, depression or impulsivity between patients with advanced GEPNET, with or without CS. Over one quarter of patients had high anxiety scores, unrelated to peripheral serotonin metabolism.

Carbon sinks constitute an important element within the complex phenomenon of global climate change,and forest ecosystems are important global carbon *** Natural Forest Protection Program（NFPP） is an ecological program in China that was established after catastrophic flooding in the country in *** goals of the NFPP are to curb the deterioration of the ecological environment,strengthen the protection and restoration of habitat to increase biodiversity,and rehabilitate natural forests to support sustainable development in forest *** study looked at changes in carbon sequestration in a forested area of northeast China after the inception of the *** program divides China＇s natural forests into three classes—commercial and two types of noneconomic forests—that are subject to management regimes prescribing varying levels of timber harvest,afforestation,and *** the 18-year period from 1998 to 2015,the total amount of carbon sequestration increased at an average annual rate of 0.04 MT *** trend reflects a transformation of forest management practices after implementation of the NFPP that resulted in prohibited and/or restricted logging and tighter regulation of allowable harvest levels for specific *** documenting this trend,guidelines for more effective implementation of forestry programs such as the NFPP in other countries in the future are also suggested.

A unified approach to output synchronization of heterogeneous multi-agent systems via L2-gain design

In this paper, a unified design procedure is given for output synchronization of heterogeneous multi-agent systems （MAS） on communication graph topologies, using relative output measurements from neighbors. Three different control protocols, namely, full-state feedback, static output-feedback, and dynamic output-feedback, are designed for output synchronization. It is seen that a unified design procedure for heterogeneous MAS can be given by formulation and solution of a suitable local L2-gain design problem. Sufficient conditions are developed in terms of stabilizing the local agents＇ dynamics, satisfying a certain small-gain criterion, and solving the output regulator equations. Local design procedures are presented for each agent to guarantee that these sufficient conditions are satisfied. The proposed control protocols require only one copy of the leader＇s dynamics in the compensator, regardless of the dimensions of the outputs. This results in lower-dimensional compensators for systems with high-order outputs, compared to the p-copy internal model approach. All three proposed control protocols are verified using numerical simulations.

Improved hearing in noise using new signal processing algorithms with the Cochlear^(TM) Nucleus~ 6 sound processor

Objective： To demonstrate the performance benefit of the Automatic Scene Classifier （SCAN） algorithm available in the Nucleus 6 （CP900 series） sound processor over the default processing algorithms of the previous generation Nucleus 5 （CP810） and Freedom HybridTM sound processors. Methods： Eighty-two cochlear implant recipients （40 Nucleus 5 processor users and 42 Freedom Hybrid processor users） listened to and repeated AzBio sentences in noise with their current processor and with the Nucleus 6 processor. results： The SCAN algorithm when enabled yielded statistically significant non-inferior and superior performance when compared to the Nucleus 5 and Freedom Hybrid sound processors programmed with ASC ＋ ADrO. Conclusion： The results of these studies demonstrate the superior performance and clinical utility of the SCAN algorithm in the Nucleus 6 processor over the Nucleus 5 and Freedom Hybrid processors.

A Low-Cost, Portable Optical Sensing System With Wireless Communication Compatible of real-Time and remote Detection of Dissolved Ammonia

A low-cost and portable optical chemical sensor based ammonia sensing system that is capable of detecting dissolved ammonia up to 5 ppm is presented. In the system, an optical chemical sensor is designed and fabricated for sensing dissolved ammonia concentrations. The sensor uses eosin as the fluorescence dye which is immobilized on the glass substrate by a gas-permeable protection layer. A compact module is developed to hold the optical components, and a battery powered micro-controller system is designed to read out and process the data measured. The system operates without the requirement of laboratory instruments that makes it cost effective and highly portable. Moreover, the calculated results in the system can be transmitted to a PC wirelessly, which allows the remote and real-time monitoring of dissolved ammonia.

The roles of Different CLE Domains in Arabidopsis CLE Polypeptide Activity and Functional Specificity

The CLE （CLVATA3/ESr-related） family of plant polypeptide signaling molecules shares a conserved 14-aminoacid （aa） motif, designated the CLE motif, which recent studies suggest is sufficient for CLE function in vitro. In this study, we report that Arabidopsis CLE proteins can function in a tissue-specific manner and confirm some CLE factors can act through different receptors. Using domain swapping, we show for the first time that the CLE motif likely determines much of the functional tissue-specificity of the proteins in planta. However, we also provide evidence in support of the new view that sequences outside the CLE motif （14 aa） contribute to CLE function and functional specificity in vivo. Additionally, we report that deletion of the putative signal peptide from different CLE proteins completely inactivates CLE function in vivo, whereas exchanging the CLE signal peptides with a conventional signal peptide from a rice glycine-rich cell wall protein also influences CLE function. We thus propose that the CLE motif itself determines its functional tissue-specificity by dic- tating the direct recognition and interaction of each CLE peptide with its optimal receptor（s）, whereas the receptor（s） may be available in a tissue-specific manner. On the other hand, the sequences outside the CLE motif may influence CLE function by affecting the processing of CLE peptides, resulting in a change in the availability and/or abundance of CLE peptides in specific tissues and/or cells.

Androgen receptors are expressed in a variety of human fetal extragenital tissues： an immunohistochemical study

Aim： To investigate the expression of androgen receptors in the extragenital tissues of developing human embryo. Methods： Using immunohistochemistry, we investigated the distribution of androgen receptor （Ar） in the extragenital tissues of paraffin-embedded tissue sections of first trimester （8-12 weeks gestation） human embryos. Gender was determined by polymerized chain reaction. results： There were no differences in the expression and distribution of Ar in male and female embryos at any stage of gestation. Ar expression was seen in the thymus gland. The bronchial epithelium of the lungs showed intense positive staining with surrounding stroma negative. Furthermore, positive staining for androgen receptor was exhibited in the spinal cord with a few positive cells in the surrounding tissues. Cardiac valves also showed strong positive staining but with faint reactivity of the surrounding cardiac muscle. There was no staining in kidney, adrenal, liver or bowel. Conclusion： This study demonstrates that immunoreactive Ar protein is present in a wide variety of human first trimester fetal tissues and shows the potential for androgen affecting tissues, which are mostly not considered to be androgen dependent. Moreover, it implies that androgen might act as atrophic factor and affect the early development of these organs rather than simply sexual differentiation.
