A subbituminous coal was oxidized with air at 150℃on a fixed bed for 4 h and xanthated with carbondisulfide in a basic solution,at 30 or 5-10℃.This xanthated coal was evaluated for the removal of Hg^(2+)and Cd^(2+)from 7,000 mg/L aqueous solutions;metal concentrations were detemmined by atomic absorption *** ionexchange of the xanthated coal was compared against those of the original subbituminous coal,a sulfonated subbituminouscoal,activated carbon,commercial activated carbon,and commercial synthetic *** commercial synthetic resinshowed the highest exchange capacity(concentration factor 98%)followed by the xanthated coal(concentration factor 96%).The retention of cadmium on the sulfonated subbituminous coal was lower(exchange capacity 0.56 meq/g)thanthat of xanthated coals(1.85±0.09 meq/g).Our xanthated coal showed a better Cd^(2+)removal(8l%o against 15%)than anon preoxidized 40-h-xanthated coal,which shows that oxidation of coal increased the amount of oxygenated groups whichenhanced xanthation.

Biogenic hydroxyapatites from mammalian bones naturally contain traces of ions, like mg, which play a vital role in the bone remodeling process. In this way, synthetic hydroxyapatites should include this kind of mineral. In this work, hydroxyapatite added with mg was synthesized by wet precipitation using（NH;）H;PO;, Ca（NO;）;.4 H;O,and mg（NO;）;.6 H;O（0, 0.032, 0.061, and 0.123 m）. Inductively coupled plasma and X-ray diffraction evidenced the mg inclusion in the hydroxyapatite lattice in the same levels reported for natural hydroxyapatites. The calcination at 600℃ was performed to remove the reaction by-products, but it also gave rise to physicochemical changes as the coalescence and crystals recrystallization. It produced, in turn, an improvement in the crystalline quality, according to Raman analysis. Despite those physicochemical changes, all the samples remained nanometric according to scanning electron microscopy imaging.

Spinal cord injury(SCI)is a devastating and disabling medical condition generally caused by a traumatic event(primary injury).This initial trauma is accompanied by a set of biological mechanisms directed to ameliorate neural damage but also exacerbate initial damage(secondary injury).The alterations that occur in the spinal cord have not only local but also systemic consequences and virtually all organs and tissues of the body incur important changes after SCI,explaining the progression and detrimental consequences related to this ***(PNIE)is a growing area of research aiming to integrate and explore the interactions among the different systems that compose the human organism,considering the mind and the body as a *** initial traumatic event and the consequent neurological disruption trigger immune,endocrine,and multisystem dysfunction,which in turn affect the patient's psyche and *** the present review,we will explore the most important local and systemic consequences of SCI from a PNIE perspective,defining the changes occurring in each system and how all these mechanisms are ***,potential clinical approaches derived from this knowledge will also be collectively presented with the aim to develop integrative therapies to maximize the clinical management of these patients.

In this paper we introduce an extension of the half-normal distribution in order to model a great variety of non-negative data. Its hazard rate function can be decreasing or increasing, depending on its parameters. Some properties of this new distribution are presented. For example, we give a general expression for the moments and a stochastic representation. Also, the cumulative distribution function, the hazard rate function, the survival function and the quantile function can be easily evaluated. maximum likelihood estimators can be computed by using numerical procedures. Finally, a real-life dataset has been presented to illustrate its applicability.

For nanotube-based electronics to become a viable alternative to silicon technology,high-density aligned carbon nanotubes are *** this paper,we report the combined use of low-pressure chemical vapor deposition and stacked multiple transfer to achieve high-density aligned *** using an optimized nanotube synthesis recipe,we have achieved high-density aligned carbon nanotubes with density as high as 30 tubes/μ*** addition,a facile stacked multiple transfer technique has been developed to further increase the nanotube density to 55 tubes/μ***,high-performance submicron carbon nanotube field-effect transistors have been fabricated on the high-density aligned *** removing the metallic nanotubes by electrical breakdown,the devices exhibit on-current density of 92.4μA/μm and normalized transconductance of 13.3μS/μ***,benchmarking with the aligned carbon nanotube transistors in the literature indicates that our devices exhibit the best performance so far,which is attributed to both the increased nanotube density and scaling down of channel *** study shows the great potential of using such high-density aligned nanotubes for high performance nanoelectronics and analog/RF applications.

Predicting the properties of two-dimensional （2D） materials as graphene and hexagonal boron nitride （h-BN） monolayers after their growth on any given substrate is a major challenge. While the influence of the electron configuration of the atoms of the underlying surface is well-understood, the effect of substrate geometry still remains unclear. The structural properties of h-BN monolayers grown on a rectangularly packed Rh（110） surface were characterized in situ by ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy and were compared to those that this material exhibits when grown on substrates showing different crystallographic orientations. Although the h-BN monolayer grown on Rh（110） was dominated by a unique quasiunidimensional moir6 pattern, suggesting considerable interface interaction, the moir6 corrugation was unexpectedly smaller than those reported for strongly interacting interfaces with hexagonal-terminated substrates, owing to differences in the possible binding landscapes at interfaces with differently oriented substrates. moreover, a rule was derived for predicting how interface corrugation and the existence and extent of subregions within moir6 supercells containing favorable sites for orbital mixing between h-BN monolayers and their supports depend on substrate symmetry. These general symmetry considerations can be applied to numerous 2D materials, including graphene, thereby enabling the prediction of how substrate choice determines the properties of these materials. Furthermore, they could also provide new routes for tuning 2D material properties and for developing nanotemplates showing different geometries for Krowing adsorbate superlattices.

Recently, Clancy [SIR epidemic models with general infectious period distribution, Statist. Prob. Left. 85 （2014） 1-5] has shown how SIR epidemics in which individuals＇ infection periods are not necessarily exponentially distributed may be modeled in terms of a piecewise-deterministic markov process （PDmP）. In this paper, we present a more detailed description of the underlying PDmP, from which we analyze the population transmission number and the infection probability of a certain susceptible individual.

The present contributions deal with the development and implementation of the direct and adjoint incompressible Navie-Stokes equations in a matrix-free time-stepping context making use of the open-source OpenFOAm~ （open source field operation and manipulation） C ＋＋ tool- box. It is shown that a few minor modifications in the source code can enable these multi-purpose computational fluid dynamics （CFD） solvers to carry out global instability analysis of three- dimensional flows of engineering interest, exploiting all additional capabilities of such codes. The strength of this methodology is demonstrated through the analysis of an interesting selection of ooen and wall-bounded flows.
