The p53 gene,from discovery to classification:the first 10 years Forty years ago four research laboratories in London,Paris,NewYork/Bethesda,and Princeton uncovered the existence of the p53 protein (Deleo et al.,1979;Lane and Crawford,1979;Linzer and levine,1979;Kress et al.,1979).Each laboratory came upon this protein for a different reason and with a different experimental approach that uncovered this unanticipated ***,the four papers permitted one to con elude the following:(i) in SV40-infected and transformed cells the SV40-e ncoded on cogene protein,the large T-antigen,formed a protein complex with a cellular-encoded protein of -53000 daltons in size,(ii) This p53 protein was detected at high levels in a variety of transformed cells derived from viral,chemical,or inherited (teratocarcinomas) transformation events,(iii) Nontransformed cells expressed lower levels of the p53 protein,(iv) Animals bearing tumors produced antibodies directed against the p53 protein.

The present paper provides a review of the available non-surgical treatments for Peyronie＇s disease （PD）. A review of published literature on oral, intralesional, external energy and iontophoresis therapies for PD was performed, and the published results of available treatment options reviewed. The authors＇ recommendations for appropriate non-surgical management of PD are provided. Although there are many published reports that show the efficacy of non-surgical therapies for PD, there is a lack of large scale, multicenter controlled clinical trials, which makes treatment recommendations difficult. Careful review of the literature does suggest that there are treatment options that make scientific sense and appear to stabilize the disease process, reduce deformity, and improve function. Offering no treatment at all will encourage our patients to pursue alternative treatments, which might do harm, and misses the opportunity to do some good. Clearly further work is necessary to develop safe and effective non-surgical treatments for PD.

AIM： To identify the bacterial flora in conditions such as Barrett＇s esophagus and reflux esophagitis to determine if they are similar to normal esophageal flora. METHODS： Using broad-range 16S rDNA PCr, esophageal biopsies were examined from 24 patients [9 with normal esophageal mucosa, 12 with gastroesophageal reflux disease （GErD）, and 3 with Barrett＇s esophagus]. Two separate broad-range PCr reactions were performed for each patient, and the resulting products were cloned. In one patient with Barrett＇s esophagus, 99 PCr clones were analyzed. rESULTS： Two separate clones were recovered from each patient （total = 48）, representing 24 different species, with 14 species homologous to known bacteria, 5 homologous to unidentified bacteria, and 5 were not homologous （〈97% identity） to any known bacterial 16S rDNA sequences. Seventeen species were found in the reflux esophagitis patients, 5 in the Barrett＇s esophagus patients, and 10 in normal esophagus patients. Further analysis concentrating on a single biopsy from an individual with Barrett＇s esophagus revealed the presence of 21 distinct bacterial species. Members of four phyla were represented, including Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteria. Microscopic examination of each biopsy demonstrated bacteria in intimate association with the distal esophageal epithelium, suggesting that the presence of these bacteria is not transitory. CONCLUSION： These findings provide evidence for a complex, residential bacterial population in esophageal reflux-related disorders. While much of this biota is present in the normal esophagus, more detailed comparisons may help identify potential disease associations.

Colorectal cancer (CrC) is a common cancer that affects one in three men and one in four women worldwide. Late-stage detection is associated with significantly lower 5-year survival rates. Although it is well established that CrC mortality rates have decreased in the past several decades, adoption of routine screening continues to lag behind screening for other common cancers such as cervical and breast cancer. The decrease in overall rates has been attributed, in part, to improved primary and secondary prevention efforts, including smoking prevention and cessation programs, nutritional counseling, and the use of evidence-based screening protocols, as well as access to better treatment. Despite the increased screening rates, it is estimated that at least one-third of eligible people do not receive appropriate screening. The objective of this review is to describe the current epidemiology of CrC and to demonstrate effective primary and secondary prevention strategies for the primary care provider.
