Evaluation of an erosion-sediment transport model for a hillslope using laboratory flume data

Climate change can escalate rainfall intensity and cause further increase in sediment transport in arid lands which in turn can adversely affect water quality. Hence, there is a strong need to predict the fate of sediments in order to provide measures for sound erosion control and water quality management. The presence of micro- topography on hillslopes influences processes of runoff generation and erosion, which should be taken into account to achieve more accurate modelling results. This study presents a physically based mathematical model for erosion and sediment transport coupled to one-dimensional overland flow equations that simulate rainfall-runoff generation on the rill and interrill areas of a bare hillslope. modelling effort at such a fine resolution considering the flow con- nection between Jnterrill areas and rills is rarely verified. The developed model was applied on a set of data gath- ered from an experimental setup where a 650 cm×136 cm erosion flume was pre-formed with a longitudinal rill and interrJll having a plane geometry and was equipped with a rainfall simulator that reproduces natural rainfall characteristics. The flume can be given both longitudinal and lateral slope directions. For calibration and validation, the model was applied on the experimental results obtained from the setup of the flume having 5% lateral and 10% longitudinal slope directions under rainfall intensities of 105 and 45 mm/h, respectively. Calibration showed that the model was able to produce good results based on the R2 （0.84） and NSE （0.80） values. The model performance was further tested through validation which also produced good statistics （R2=0.83, NSE=0.72）. Results in terms of the sedigraphs, cumulative mass curves and performance statistics suggest that the model can be a useful and an important step towards verifying and improving mathematical models of erosion and sediment transport.

Evaluation of periglacial landforms and formation of soil properties on the mount Honaz,SW Türkiye

The main aim of this study is to explain periglacial processes on the summits of mount Honaz(2571 m a.s.l.),define periglacial landforms,and determine the relationships between morphometric features and topographic *** circles,stony earth circles,non sorted steps,and non sorted stripes were identified on the summits of mount ***'s correlation coefficient(r)and linear regression analyses were performed by taking metric measurements from 125 periglacial landforms to describe their morphometric features(length,width,height)of periglacial landforms and explain the relationships between them and topographic factors(elevation,slope).To explain the relationships between periglacial landforms and soil properties,soil samples from 11 periglacial landforms were taken and *** landforms,which continue to develop on the summits of mount Honaz today,have been evaluated with present climate *** of soil samples indicates a notable impact of parent material on the genesis of periglacial *** high ratio of organic matter in mud circle and non sorted step landforms and the high lime ratio in stony earth circle landforms prove a strong relationship between the formation mechanisms of landforms and the soil ***,it is consistent with the findings obtained from the analysis that severe periglacial processes and washing and scavenging events are experienced more on the northern slopes.

In this study,antimony production from a stibnite concentrate(Sb2S3)was performed in one step using a molten salt electrolysis method and borax as an *** reduction of the stibnite concentrate was performed at 800℃under galvanostatic conditions and explained in detail by the reactions and intermediate compounds formed in the *** effects of current density(100 800 mA cm^-2)and electrolysis time(10 40 min)on cathodic current efficiency and antimony yields were systematically *** the highest current efficiency,which was obtained at 600 mA cm^-2,direct metal production was possible with 62%cathodic current efficiency and approximately 6 kWh/kg energy *** the end of the 40-min electrolysis duration at 600 mA cm^-2 current density,antimony reduction reached 30.7 g and 99%of the antimony fed to the cell was obtained as metal.

Dielectric behaviors at microwave frequencies and mossbauer effects of chalcedony, agate, and zultanite

In this study, dielectric properties within 8-12 GHz microwave frequencies, inductively coupled plasma-atomic emis- sion spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, synchronized two thermal analyses, and 57Fe mossbauer spectroscopy analysis of chalcedony, agate, and zultanite samples from Turkey are presented. Agate and chalcedony show the same nine vibrational absorption peaks obtained unlike zultanite from FTIR spectra in the 350 cm-1 to 4000 cm-1 range, ε＇ values of chalcedony, agate and zultanite derived at 10.5 GHz were 4.67, 4.41, and 7.34, respectively, eI and e~ values of the studied samples at the microwave frequencies are related to the percentage weight of their constituent parts in their chemical compositions. 57Fe mossbauer spectroscopy results confirm the existence of iron-containing islands in the crystal structure of zultanite, agate, and chalcedony samples, equipped them with magnetic features typical for magnetic nanoparticles including superparamagnetism. The presence of iron-containing islands significantly affects the magnetic, dielectric, and optical properties of studied samples that are not observed for pure minerals without any foreign inclusions.

Prevalence of microscopic colitis in patients with diarrhea of unknown etiology in Turkey

AIm: To investigate the prevalence and demography of microscopic colitis in patients with diarrhea of unknown etiology and normal colonoscopy in Turkey. mETHODS: Between march, 1998 to July, 2005, 129 patients with chronic non-bloody diarrhea of unexplained etiology who had undergone full colonoscopy with no obvious abnormalities were included in the study. Two biopsies were obtained from all colonic segments and terminal ileum for diagnosis of microscopic colitis. On histopathologic examination, criteria for lymphocytic colitis (intraepithelial lymphocyte ≥ 20 per 100 intercryptal epithelial cells, change in surface epithelium, mononuclear infiltration of the lamina propria) and collagenous colitis (subepithelial collagen band thickness ≥ 10 μm) were explored. RESULTS: Lymphocytic colitis was diagnosed in 12 (9%) patients (Female/male: 7/5, mean age: 45 year, range: 27-63) and collagenous colitis was diagnosed in only 3 (2.5%) patients (all female, mean age: 60 years, range: 54-65).CONCLUSION: Biopsy of Turkish patients with the diagnosis of chronic non-bloody diarrhea of unexplained etiology and normal colonoscopic findings will reveal microscopic colitis in approximately 10% of the patients. Lymphocytic colitis is 4 times more frequent than collagenous colitis in these patients.

The effect of neodymium substitution on the structural and magnetic properties of nickel ferrite

Nickel ferrite Ni Fe2O4 is a typical soft magnetic ferrite with high electrical resistivity used as high frequency magnetic material. Neodymium(Nd3+) doped Ni Fe2O4 materials were fabricated using solid state reaction. The properties of the obtained material were investigated by X-Ray Diffraction(XRD), Scanning Electron microscope(SEm), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FT-IR), magnetic measurements on SQUID and m?ssbauer spectroscopy. It was found that the material consists of two different phases: Nd3+doped Ni Fet2O4and Nd Fe O3. The Nd3 ions occupy cation sites of the Ni Fe2O4 inverse spinel structure. NdFeO3 phase occurred when the level of Nd3+atoms exceed a percolation *** presence of both phases was confirmed by SEm observations. The m?ssbauer spectra analysis showed two sextets, which can be ascribed to iron atoms in tetrahedral and octahedral positions. From their intensities it is concluded that Nd3+occupies octahedral sites in the spinel structure of Ni Fe2O4, which were originally occupied by Ni2+.

Transfer of single dose of intravitreal injection of ranibizumab and bevacizumab into milk of sheep

AIm： To investigate whether single-dose intravitreal injections of bevacizumab and ranibizumab transfer into milk. mETHODS： This study included lactating 12 sheep and a single 3-month old suckling lamb of each sheep. Two groups consisting of 6 sheep and their lambs were constituted; the ranibizumab group and the bevacizumab group before the administration of intravitreal injections, blood and milk samples were obtained from all sheep and, following the injections, blood and milk samples of all sheep and blood samples of all lambs were collected at regular time points. Serum and milk concentrations of bevacizumab and ranibizumab were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay（ELISA） kit. The limit of determination was 0.9 ng/m L for bevacizumab and 0.62 ng/m L for ***： At 6h after intravitreal injections, bevacizumab concentration was above the limit of determination in the blood of all sheep. At 3wk, when the study was terminated, bevacizumab concentrations were high in 4 sheep. Even though bevacizumab concentrations in milk showed fluctuations, the drug transferred into the milk of all sheep at detectable concentrations. Ranibizumab drug concentrations in the blood and milk of sheep and those in the blood of lambs were below the limit of determination by the ELISA ***： This sheep model study demonstrate that intravitreal injection of ranibizumab, which did not transfer into the milk of sheep and suckling lambs, is safer than bevacizumab during lactation period.

Effect of transcatheter aortic valve implantation on QT dispersion in patients with aortic stenosis

Background QT dispersion （QTd） is a predictor of ventricular arrhythmia. Ventricular arrhythmia is an important factor influencing morbidity and mortality in patients with aortic stenosis. Surgical aortic valve replacement reduced the QTd in this patients group. However, the effect of transcatheter aortic valve implantation （TAVI） on QTd in patients with aortic stenosis is unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of TAVI on QTd in patients with aortic stenosis. methods Patients with severe aortic stenosis, who were not candi-dates for surgical aortic valve replacement due to contraindications or high surgical risk, were included in the study. All patients underwent electrocardiographic and echocardiographic evaluation before, and at the 6th month after TAVI, computed QTd and left ventricular mass index （LVmI）. Results A total 30 patients were admitted to the study （mean age 83.2 ± 1.0 years, female 21 and male 9, mean valve area 0.7 ± 3 mm2）. Edwards SAPIEN heart valves, 23 mm （21 patients） and 26 mm （9 patients）, by the transfemoral approach were used in the TAVI procedures. All TAVI procedures were successful. Both QTd and LVmI at the 6th month after TAVI were significantly reduced com-pared with baseline values of QTd and LVmI before TAVI （73.8 ± 4 ms vs. 68 ± 2 ms, P=0.001 and 198 ± 51 g/m2 vs. 184 ± 40 g/m2, P=0.04, respectively）. There was a significant correlation between QTd and LVmI （r=0.646, P〈0.001）. Conclusions QTd, which malign ventricular arrhythmia marker, and LVmI were significantly reduced after TAVI procedure. TAVI may decrease the possibility of ventricu-lar arrhythmia in patients with aortic stenosis.

Recently,we have shown that manual stimulation of paralyzed vibrissal muscles after facial-facial anastomosis reduced the poly-innervation of neuromuscular junctions and restored vibrissal *** gene knock outs,we found a differential dependence of manual stimulation effects on growth ***,insulin-like growth factor-1 and brain-derived neurotrophic factor are required to underpin manual stimulation-mediated improvements,whereas FGF-2 is *** lack of dependence on FGF-2 in mediating these peripheral effects prompted us to look centrally,*** the facial nucleus where increased astrogliosis after facial-facial anastomosis follows ＂synaptic stripping＂.We measured the intensity of Cy3-fluorescence after immunostaining for glial fibrillary acidic protein（GFAP） as an indirect indicator of synaptic coverage of axotomized neurons in the facial nucleus of mice lacking FGF-2（FGF-2^（-/-） mice）.There was no difference in GFAP-Cy3-fluorescence（pixel number,gray value range17-103） between intact wildtype mice（2.12± 0.37×10~7） and their intact FGF-2^（-/-） counterparts（2.12±0.27×10~7） nor after facial-facial anastomosis ＋handling（wildtype：4.06±0.32×10~7;FGF-2^（-/-）：4.39±0.17×10~7）.However,after facial-facial anastomosis,GFAP-Cy3-fluorescence remained elevated in FGF-2^（-/-）-animals（4.54±0.12×10~7）,whereas manual otimulation reduced the intensity of GFAP-immunofluorescence in wild type mice to values that were not significantly different from intact mice（2.63±0.39×10）.We conclude that FGF-2 is not required to underpin the beneficial effects of manual stimulation at the neuro-muscular junction,but it is required to minimize astrogliosis in the brainstem and,by implication,restore synaptic coverage of recovering facial motoneurons.
