Amphibians and Reptiles of Luzon Island, Philippines: the Herpetofauna of Pantabangan-Carranglan Watershed, Nueva ecija Province, Caraballo Mountain Range

We present detailed species accounts for fifty-nine(59) species of amphibians and reptiles(17 frogs, 14 skinks, 3 agamids, 6 gekkonid lizards, 2 varanids, and 17 snakes) from Pantabangan-Carranglan Watershed, which lies within the Caraballo Mountain Range, whose biota is poorly-known. This was also the first extensive survey of herpetofauna within the watershed. Together with data from previous literature reviews, our records bring the total number of species of amphibians and reptiles for the Caraballo Mountain Range to 66. Forty-two(42) species from the area were Philippine endemics, with 25 species recorded only from Luzon faunal region. Seven species of herpetofauna are associated with unresolved taxonomic issues(new species and species complexes needing taxonomic partitioning, e.g. splitting of species groups). Two species recorded from the area were rarely represented in museum collections. Major distributional and elevational range extensions were recorded for several species. Comparison with Luzon’s other mountain ranges showed that the Caraballo Mountain Range is similar, in terms of species composition, to the northern Sierra Madre and Cordillera Mountain Ranges. The result of this survey showed the Caraballo Mountain Range and its mountains as a possible new center of herpetofaunal diversity and endemicity within Luzon. The importance of the Caraballo Mountain Range as an important biogeographic link merits further study.

Influence of broken kernels content on soybean quality during storage

Although it is recognized that the post-harvest system is most responsible for the loss of soybean quality,the real impact of this loss is still *** regulation allows 15%and 30%of broken soybean for group I and group II(quality groups),***,the industry is not informed about the loss in the quality parameters of soybeans and its impacts during long-term ***,the objective was to evaluate the effect of the breakage kernel percentage of soybean stored for 12 *** of 15% of breakage kernels did not affect soybean ***,content of 30% of breakage kernels affected significantly soybean quality,which was evidenced by the increase of up to 75% in moldy soybeans,72% in acidity,50% in leached solids,27% in electrical conductivity,and the decrease of up to 12% in soluble protein,6.4% in germination and 3.5% in thousand kernel weight after 8 months of *** the legislation establishes a percentage limit,it is recommended to store soybeans with up to 15% breakage *** the contrary,values higher than that can cause a significant reduction in soybean quality,resulting in commercial losses.

The larval stages of the cestode parasites belonging to the genus echinococcus grow within internal organs of humans and a range of animal *** resulting diseases,collectively termed echinococcoses,include major neglected tropical diseases of humans and *** larvae are outwardly protected by the laminated layer(LL),an acellular structure that is unique to this *** LL is based on a fibrillar meshwork made up of mucins,which are decorated by galactose-rich *** addition,in the species cluster termed *** sensu lato,the LL features nano-deposits of the calcium salt of myo-inositol hexakisphosphate(Insp_(6)).The main purpose of our article is to update the immunobiology of the *** recent advances in this area are(i)the demonstration of LL“debris”at the infection site and draining lymph nodes,(ii)the characterization of the decoy activity of calcium Inp6 with respect to complement,(iii)the evidence that the LL mucin carbohydrates interact specifically with a lectin receptor expressed in Kupffer cells(Clec4F),and(iv)the characterization of what appear to be receptor-independent effects of LL particles on dendritic cells and *** information is missing on the immunology of this intriguing structure:we discuss gaps in knowledge and propose possible avenues for research.

effects of cropland abandonment and afforestation on soil redistribution in a small Mediterranean mountain catchment

In slopes of Mediterranean mid-mountain areas,land use and land cover changes linked to the aban-donment of cropland activity affect soil quality and degradation and soil redistribution;however,limited attention has been paid to this issue at catchment *** paper evaluates the effects of cropland abandonment and post-land abandonment management(through natural revegetation and afforesta-tion)on soil redistribution rates using fallout ^(137)Cs measurements in the Araguás catchment(0.45 km^(2),Central Spanish Pyrenees).A total of 52 soil core samples,distributed in a regular grid,from the first 30-40 cm and 9 sectioned reference samples were collected across the catchment and soil properties were *** ^(137)Cs was measured in a 5 cm sectioned references samples and in bulk grid samples.^(137)Cs inventories were used to estimate soil erosion and deposition rates across the *** show that the highest erosion rates were recorded under sparsely vegetated sites in the badland area,while the lowest rates were found in the afforested area,but no significant differences were observed between the different uses and covers in soil redistribution rates likely due to a long history of human intervention through cultivation in steep slopes and afforestation ***,the recovery of the soil organic matter in afforested areas suggest that afforestation can reduce soil degradation at long-term *** information gained achieve a better understanding of soil redistribution dynamics and provide knowledge for effective land management after cropland abandonment of agroecosystems in Mediter-ranean mountain areas.

Neurodegenerative diseases are a heterogeneous group of maladies, characterized by progressive loss of neurons. These diseases involve an intricate pattern of cross-talk between different types of cells to maintain specific signaling pathways. A component of such intercellular cross-talk is the exchange of various types of extracellular vesicles (eVs). exosomes are a subset of eVs, which are increasingly being known for the role they play in the pathogenesis and progression of neurodegenerative diseases, e.g., synucleinopathies and tauopathies. The ability of the central nervous system exosomes to cross the blood-brain barrier into blood has generated enthusiasm in their study as potential biomarkers. However, the lack of standardized, efficient, and ultra-sensitive methods for the isolation and detection of brain-derived exosomes has hampered the development of effective biomarkers. exosomes mirror heterogeneous biological changes that occur during the progression of these incurable illnesses, potentially offering a more comprehensive outlook of neurodegenerative disease diagnosis, progression and treatment. In this review, we aim to discuss the challenges and opportunities of peripheral biofluid-based brain-exosomes in the diagnosis and biomarker discovery of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. In the later part, we discuss the traditional and emerging methods used for the isolation of exosomes and compare their advantages and disadvantages in clinical settings.

Dynamic Instability of Straight Bars Subjected to Impulsive Axial Loads Using the DeM

Since the half of the XX century,attention was given to the instability of structures under parametric excitation,especially under periodic *** the other hand,the instability of bars subjected to axial loads of impulsive type has been little studied,in spite of the practical importance of the ***,in engineering Design it is frequently supposed,without tests or additional verifications,that an axial load of short duration can exceed the euler critical load of the bar without inducing damage in the *** this context,this paper proposes the use of the truss-like Discrete element Method(DeM)for determining the dynamic response of elastic straight bars subjected to axial loads defined by pulses of short *** proposed approach allows the consideration of initial imperfections,as well as large displacements and other non-linear *** influence of the pulse duration and other effects in the response of the bar are also ***,the performance of the proposed methodology is verified in static and dynamic instability problems of homogeneous bars without geometrical imperfections,by comparing the DeM results with analytical solutions available in the *** that,the DeM is employed to analyze more complex cases,including bars with initial imperfections and non-homogeneous bars,in which material properties,as Young’s modulus and mass density,are assumed to be correlated Gaussian random *** proposed methodology has proven to be a useful and easy tool for analysis of dynamic instability of bars and could therefore be used by designers for estimating the dynamic buckling load.

Knowing the causes of biological invasion success can be relevant to combat future invasive *** recent invasion of the horseshoe whip snake Hemorrhois hippocrepis on the island of Ibiza provides the opportunity to compare natural history traits between invasive and source populations,and to unravel what makes this snake a successful invader that is threatening the only endemic vertebrate of the island,Podarcis *** study compares the basic reproductive traits of mainland native and invasive populations of the *** results revealed that invasive populations were characterized by female maturity at a smaller size,extended reproductive period,and much lower reproduction frequency compared to the native *** contrast,some major reproductive traits--the abdominal fat body cycle,clutch size,hatchling body size,and hatchling body condition,did not differ between the two *** of these results must reflect the environmental differences in the recently invaded island with respect to the source area,and overall plasticity of reproductive *** is evolutionarily interesting,and may aid the succesful growth of this species in their invasiveness of Mediterranean islands like *** most significant finding is that this expression of phenotypic plasticity occurred rapidly in this invasive population,within a period of 14 years *** results on the reproduction ecology of the invasive population were not conclusive regarding the factors determining the invasiveness of the snake and pointed to alternative causes.

Multifunctional flexible optical waveguide sensor: on the bioinspiration for ultrasensitive sensors development

This paper presents the development of a bioinspired multifunctional flexible optical sensor(BioMFOS)as an ultrasensitive tool for force(intensity and location)and orientation *** sensor structure is bioinspired in orb webs,which are multifunctional devices for prey capturing and vibration *** multifunctional feature of the structure is achieved by using transparent resins that present both mechanical and optical properties for structural integrity and strain/deflection transmission as well as the optical signal transmission properties with core/cladding configuration of a *** this case,photocurable and polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)resins are used for the core and cladding,*** optical transmission,tensile tests,and dynamic mechanical analysis are performed in the resins and show the possibility of light transmission at the visible wavelength range in conjunction with high flexibility and a dynamic range up to 150 Hz,suitable for wearable *** BioMFOS has small dimensions(around 2 cm)and lightweight(0.8 g),making it suitable for wearable application and clothing *** tests are performed in the structure by means of applying forces at different locations of the *** results show an ultra-high sensitivity and resolution,where forces in theμN range can be detected and the location of the applied force can also be detected with a sub-millimeter spatial ***,the BioMFOS is tested on the orientation detection in 3D plane,where a correlation coefficient higher than 0.9 is obtained when compared with a gold-standard inertial measurement unit(IMU).Furthermore,the device also shows its capabilities on the movement analysis and classification in two protocols:finger position detection(with the BioMFOS positioned on the top of the hand)and trunk orientation assessment(with the sensor integrated on the clothing).In both cases,the sensor is able of classifying the movement,especially wh
