Best management practices to reduce soil erosion and change water balance components in watersheds under grain and dairy production

Soil erosion and sedimentation are among the most serious global environmental *** and water conservation measures have been proven effective ways to reduce soil *** objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of three approaches of soil and water conservation measures(soil management,vegetative measures,and structural practices)on soil erosion and water balance of two paired agricultural watersheds located in Southern *** and sediment monitoring was carried out from 2016 to 2019 in the two small paired agricultural watersheds;called North watershed(NW)and South watershed(SW).Modeling using Soil&Water Assessment Tool(SWAT)was performed to simulate individual(nine scenarios)and combined(four scenarios)best management practices(BMPs),by including the three *** the nine individual BMP scenarios,the most effective in reducing soil erosion was crop rotation and cover crop(sediment yield,SY,reduction of 38.4 for NW,and 28.8%for SW).Among the four combined scenarios,the association of all conservation approaches was the most effective in reducing soil erosion(SY reduction of 46 for NW,and 41.5%for SW),followed by the vegetative measures scenario(SY reduction of 43.5 and 34.1%for NW and SW).All combined scenarios increased infiltration and subsurface water components,and decreased surface *** findings of this study can help farmers and policymakers choosing appropriate BMPs to reduce current soil erosion problems and promote water and soil conservation.

The broke of a tailings dam from Vale S.A. destroyed a gigantic area killing 270 persons in Brumadinho/Brazil. Organizing activities after a mass disaster is a complex process that requires the involvement of many people and resources in the laboratory. To DNA identification of the victims, a daunting work had to be made by DNA laboratory staff in a collaborative effort with many partners. Efforts to implement good practice guidelines in Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) have revealed several important aspects that need to change in the forensic DNA laboratory. This article highlights the challenges of implementing DVI best practice guidelines in resource-poor settings, but with professionals from different sectors engaged in the same goal of briefly identifying victims and helping families and society.

Noninvasive diagnosis of periportal fibrosis in schistosomiasis mansoni:A comprehensive review

Schistosomiasis mansoni is a neglected disease and key public health problem,mainly due to its high prevalence,the scarcity of public policies,and the severity of some clinical *** fibrosis(PPF)is the commonest complication of chronic schistosomiasis mansoni and its diagnosis requires different *** though wedge biopsy of the liver is considered the gold standard,it is not justified in non-surgical patients,and percutaneous liver biopsy may be informative but does not have sufficient *** PPF tests mostly include biological(serum biomarkers or combined scores)or physical assessments(imaging assessment of fibrosis pattern or tissue stiffness).Moreover,imaging techniques,such as ultrasound,computed tomography,magnetic resonance imaging,and elastography are applied not only to support the diagnosis of schistosomiasis,but also to assess and detect signs of portal hypertension and organ damage due to chronic schistosomiasis.A combination between a comprehensive history and physical examination with biomarkers for liver fibrosis and imaging methods seems to offer the best approach for evaluating these *** addition,understanding their strengths and limitations will allow a more accurate interpretation in the clinical context and can lead to greater accuracy in estimating the degree of fibrosis in patients with Schistosomiasis mansoni(***)*** review will discuss the different noninvasive methods that are currently available for the evaluation of PPF in *** infection,and their application,advantages,and limitations in clinical practice.

BACKGROUND The evaluation of periportal fibrosis(PPF)is essential for a prognostic assessment of patients with Schistosomiasis *** WHO Niamey Protocol defines patterns of fibrosis from abdominal ultrasonography,^(1)H-nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)-based metabonomics has been employed to assess liver fibrosis in some *** To build 1H-NMR-based metabonomics models(MM)to discriminate mild from significant periportal PPF and identify differences in the metabolite *** A prospective cross-sectional study was performed on schistosomiasis patients at a University Hospital in Northeastern *** evaluated 41 serum samples from 10 patients with mild PPF(C Niamey pattern)and 31 patients with significant PPF(D/E/F Niamey patterns).MM were built using partial least squares-discriminant analysis(PLS-DA)and orthogonal projections to latent structures discriminant analysis(OPLS-DA)*** PLS-DA and OPLS-DA resulted in discrimination between mild and significant PPF groups with R2 and Q2 values of 0.80 and 0.38 and 0.72 and 0.42 for each model,*** OPLS-DA model presented accuracy,sensitivity,and specificity values of 92.7%,90.3%,and 100%to discriminate significant *** metabolites identified as responsible by discrimination were:Nacetylglucosamines,alanine,glycolaldehyde,carbohydrates,and *** MMs discriminated mild from significant PPF patterns in patients with Schistosomiasis mansoni through identification of differences in serum metabolites profiles.

Current HPV Vaccination Strategies in Brazil

Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable malignancies, however, it still has high incidence and mortality rates, especially in less developed countries. For Brazil, the estimate is more than 16,000 new cases and more than 6000 deaths annually. Despite this, vaccines against HPV (responsible for cervical cancer) are effective and promote a significant decrease in infections and neoplastic lesions of the cervix. As recommended by the World Health Organization, girls aged 9 to 14 should be vaccinated before becoming sexually active. Although the vaccine was developed in 2006, in Brazil immunization only started to be carried out in 2014, initially only for girls between 9 and 11 years old. The present work is an integrative review, with the objective of explaining the current situation of vaccination against HPV throughout the country. Using the PubMed, MED-LINE and Google Scholar databases, a search for scientific articles was carried out during the year 2022, using the descriptors “Vaccine”, “HPV” and “Brazil”, simultaneously selecting 17 articles. The Brazilian recommendations for vaccination against HPV have undergone several strategic changes over time, in the following points: age group and gender of the target population, major site of application of vaccines and number of doses to be applied. Currently, in Brazil, the recommendation for vaccination against HPV is neutral in gender, between 9 and 14 years old and in immunosuppressed people up to 45 years old, with a vaccination schedule of 2 doses with an interval of 6 months between them, and 3 doses for those from 15 years and immunocompromised individual (0 - 2 - 6 months). The tetravalent vaccine offered by public funding continues to be applied at health centers, despite several favorable criticisms of the return of application in schools. Trauma outcomes in nonfatal road traffic accidents:a Portuguese medico-legal approach

This work investigates the effect of cerium substation into strontium cobalt perovskites(CeSrCoO)for the oxidative degradation of OrangeⅡ(OII)in dark ambient conditions without the aid of any external stimulants such as light,heating or chemical *** OII degradation rate by CeSrCoO reached 65%in the first hour,whilst for the blank sample without cerium(SrCoO)took over 2 hr to reach the same level of OII ***,the cerium substitution improved the catalytic activity of the perovskite material,mainly associated with the Ce0.1Sr0.9CoO3 perovskite *** contacting CeSrCoO,the-N=Nazo bonds of the OII molecules broke down resulting in electron donation and the formation of *** electrons are injected into the CeSrCoO and resulted in a redox pair of Co3+/Co2+,establishing a bridge for the electron transfer between OII and the ***,the electrons also formed reactive species(·OH)responsible for OII degradation as evidenced by radical trapping *** species were formed via the reaction between 02 and donated electrons from OII with the aid of cobalt redox *** the prepared materials dispensed with the need for light irradiation and additional oxidants,it opens a window of environmental applications for treating contaminated wastewaters.
