On 13 December 2022,a couple was driving through the Angeles National Forest near Los Angeles,CA,UsA,when their car slid off the road,plowed 100 m down a steep hillside,and landed upside down at the bottom of a canyon[1].Although the couple suffered only minor injuries,they were trapped in the canyon,and in the remote area the passenger could not get any reception on her iPhone 14 cellular ***,she was able to send an sOs through a new feature on the phone that routes such messages via satellites[2].Rescuers alerted to the couple’s location airlifted them out of the canyon later the same day.

In september 2021,the world’s most powerful high-temperature superconducting magnet passed its first test,generating a 20 T magnetic field during a 5 h trial[1].The 3 m tall,9000 kg device(Fig.1)is the centerpiece of an ambitious plan by the start-up Commonwealth Fusion systems,headquartered in Cambridge,MA,UsA,to build a fusion reactor that produces more energy than it requires to stimulate and sustain its nuclear reactions[2,3].None of the experimental fusion approaches that scientists have tested has come close to that *** the multi-billion UsD International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor(ITER),the massive project sponsored by 35 countries that is under construction in southern France(Fig.2),is not projected to pass the breakeven point until the mid-2030s at the earliest[2,4].But Commonwealth Fusion systems aims to have a pilot plant operating by 2025.

In a narrow passageway beneath the city of Louisville, KY, UsA, a meter-tall robot with a yellow, rectangular body and four limbs that resemble a dog’s legs carefully descended a rocky slope. But as the robot attempted to turn, it lost its footing and tumbled down the slope, landing on its side. A modified commercial model known as‘‘spot,”the machine almost immediately began extending and rotating its legs, pushing against the floor of the passageway. In about 40 s, it stood upright again and resumed exploring the passage.

To understand the function of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase kinase,we introduced PtPEPCK1 gene under the control of 35s promoter into 84K poplar(Populus alba×***).PtPEPCK1 gene is well-known for its role in ***,our data confi rmed that it has signifi cant eff ects on amino acid biosynthesis and nitrogen *** and fl uorescence microscopy indicate that PtPEPCK1 is specifi cally expressed in the cytoplasm of the spongy and palisade *** of PtPEPCK1 was characterized through transcriptomics and *** metabolites concentration of the ornithine cycle and its precursors also increased,of which N-acetylornithine was up-regulated almost 50-fold and ornithine *** were accompanied by a massive increase in levels of several amino ***,overexpression of PtPEPCK1 increases amino acid levels with urea cycle disorder.

In February 2021,during a massive blackout in Texas,UsA,a man made the news for using his hybrid Ford F-150 pickup truck,a model equipped with a generator,to power his house for three days[1].Other hybrid F-150 owners followed suit,and Ford requested that its Texas dealerships lend out the trucks on their lots so that more people could access these mini-power stations during the week-long disaster[2].That some residents had to rely on their pickup trucks to provide electricity for their homes illustrates the severity of the grid crisis that paralyzed *** an average of 42 h,69%of Texans had no electricity(Fig.1)[3],leaving many homes without heat as temperatures fell to record *** half of the population also lacked running water because water plants lost power[3].According to the state’s figures,hypothermia,carbon monoxide poisoning,and other storm-related causes exacerbated by the power outage killed at least 210 people[4],but one analysis put the death toll at 700[5].The economic price tag,including damage to homes and businesses from burst pipes,may be as high as 200 billion UsD[6].
