This study deals with the analysis of the glacial processes that have affected the relief of Mt Chelmos in northern Peloponnesus, Greece during middle and Late Pleistocene. The goal was to compile a combined geomorphological-geological map of the study area which would enable the chronological stratification of the glacial landforms cropping up on Mt. Chelmos. Chronological stratification was further aided by optically stimulated luminescence(OSL)dating. The map served as the basis upon which the reconstruction and discussion on the phases of the Middle-Late Quaternary paleoclimatic history of *** have been made. A sophisticated semiautomated method was first used to analyze the Digital Elevation Model(DEM), combined with Aster,Quickbird and ALOS imagery in order to identify glacial and periglacial, as well as karstic ***, these features along with other nonrecognizable features from the remote-sensing images were documented in the field. In this way, several glacial landforms were identified, such as moraines and cirques, indicating extended glaciation phases during the middle and Late Pleistocene. Additionally,a ground moraine located at an altitude of 1900-2050 m, within the Spanolakos glacial valley, was dated using the OSL-dating method. The resulting ages indicate a phase of glacier advance/stabilization during MIS-5 b(89-86 ka), which is in consistence with pollenrecord evidence from Greece and the *** above the floors of the highest cirques on Mount Tymphi(Hughes 2004). These glacial landforms postdate the youngest moraines on Mount Tymphi(Tymphian Stage MIS 5 d-2), and it has been argued that they might be Younger Dryas in age(Woodward and Hughes 2011) although this has not been confirmed by radiometric dating(Hughes et al. 2006 d).Recent field observations throughout the mountains of central Greece(Leontartitis and Pavlopoulos, unpublished data) demonstrate that the glaciation extent has been underestimated in several

Geomorphological Evolution and Fluvial System Development during the Holocene: The Case of Vouraikos River Evolution in Kalavrita Plain, Northern Peloponnese, Greece

Fluvial geomorphology is affected by physical conditions which allow its adaptation due to high dynamics and environmental influences. Fluvial morphological changes are manifested as a result of tendency of the river system to maintain its physical balance. Our study area is the upper and middle flow part of Vouraikos river and surrounding area, near the NW border of Chelmos mountain in Northern Peloponnese, near the town of Kalavrita, at an altitude of 800 m. The area is part of the Skepasto basin, constituting of a graben with a general E-W direction that was developed NW of Kalavrita. The area comprises of Mesozoic, Upper Triassic-Jurassic limestone and dolomite of the Tripolitsa unit External Hellenides and Plio-Pleistocene fluvio-lacustrine sequences, while its tectonic structure is characterized mainly by normal faults. The geomorphological landscape is characterized by alluvial deposits and important geomorphological features including fluvial terraces, alluvial fans, fluvial scarps and their main rill washes. This area has been a place of major human activity as shown by the findings of many uncovered artifacts and a settlement. Through a paleographic reconstruction, detailed field investigations, in combination with the compilation of geomorphological maps using GIS software and archaeological evidence found in the area, we attempted to reconstruct the fluvial evolution of Vouraikos river and identify the major geomorphological factors that led to, and influenced it. Finally, the link between cultural activities and sedimentary processes is also studied. The recorded environmental variations had a great impact on the geomorphological shaping and instability of Kalavrita plain and Vouraikos river and are being reflected on the buried settlement. Probiotics: Shaping the gut immunological responses

Probiotics are live microorganisms exerting beneficial effects on the host’s health when administered in adequate *** the most popular and adequately studied probiotics are bacteria from the families Lactobacillaceae,Bifidobacteriaceae and *** of them have been shown,both in vitro and in vivo studies of intestinal inflammation models,to provide favorable results by means of improving the gut microbiota composition,promoting the wound healing process and shaping the immunological *** intestinal conditions,such as inflammatory bowel diseases(IBD),are characterized by an imbalance in microbiota composition,with decreased diversity,and by relapsing and persisting inflammation,which may lead to mucosal *** the results of the clinical studies investigating the effect of probiotics on patients with IBD are still controversial,it is without doubt that these microorganisms and their metabolites,now named postbiotics,have a positive influence on both the host’s microbiota and the immune system,and ultimately alter the topical tissue *** influence is achieved through three axes:(1)By dis-placement of potential pathogens via competitive exclusion;(2)by offering protection to the host through the secretion of various defensive mediators;and(3)by supplying the host with essential *** will analyze and discuss almost all the in vitro and in vivo studies of the past 2 years dealing with the possible favorable effects of certain probiotic genus on gut immunological responses,highlighting which species are the most beneficial against intestinal inflammation.

Set-theoretic detection of data corruption attacks on cyber physical power systems

This paper addresses a set-theoretic method for the detection of data corruption cyber-attacks on the load frequency control loop of a networked power system. The system consists of several interconnected control areas forming a power grid. Based on the overall discrete-time network dynamics, a convex and compact polyhedral robust invariant set is extracted and is used as a set-induced anomaly detector. If the state vector exits the invariant set,then an alarm will be activated, and the potential threat is considered disclosed. The attack scenario used to assess the efficiency of the proposed anomaly detector concerns corrupted frequency sensor measurements transmitted to the automatic generation control unit of a compromised control area. Simulation studies highlight the ability of a set-theoretic approach to disclose persistent and intermittent attack patterns even when they occur at the same time with changes in the power load demand.

Phronesis and Dao： Cultivating Ethics and Wisdom in the Process of Making Architecture

Contemporary China, the largest construction site in the world, is the centre of production of architectural ＇vessels＇ that are compacted with technical and scientific knowledge. Nevertheless, traditional wisdom and personal cultivation is often neglected in this process of creating architecture. This paper makes a connection between the Chinese ideogram of 道（dao = way）, with the Greek term of φρovησιc （phronesis = practical wisdom）, in the context of architecture. We argue that both terms bring forth the importance of ethics and practical wisdom in the making of architecture, as a process of cultivation. This argument is discussed through two case studies： a historical Chinese garden （Sima Guang＇s ＇Garden of Solitary Enjoyment＇）, as a manifestation of Dao, and an educational situation from a contemporary architectural design studio in a school of architecture, as a manifestation of phronesis. Both these diverse examples offer a possibility to see architecture as the creation of ＇vessels for life＇ where ＇vessel＇ and ＇life＇ are inseparable.

Association of liver cirrhosis related IgA nephropathy with portal hypertension

A high incidence of IgA nephropathy has been reported in patients with liver cirrhosis, though, clinically evident nephrotic syndrome is very uncommon. Impaired hepatic clearance of circulating IgA immune complexes and subsequent deposition in renal glomeruli has been considered principally in the pathogenesis of liver cirrhosis associated IgA nephropathy. Here we report on a patient with cryptogenic liver cirrhosis and splenic vein thrombosis, who presented with nephrotic syndrome. Renal biopsy showed findings consistent with IgA nephropathy. Lower endoscopy showed features of portal hypertensive colopathy. Following initiation of propranolol and anticoagulant treatment to reduce portal pressure, a gradual decrease of proteinuria and hematuria to normal range was noted. The potential pathogenetic role of portal hypertension in the development of IgA nephropathy in cirrhotic patients is discussed.

Urothelial or oral mucosa cells for tissue-engineered urethroplasty: A critical revision of the clinical outcome

Objective:To report the clinical outcome of urethral reconstruction by cultured urothelial or oral mucosa cells for tissue-engineered ***:We systematically searched for studies reporting the use of tissue-engineered techniques for hypospadias and urethral stricture repair in humans in PubMed and Embase(OvidSP)through January,1990 to June,*** excluded studies based on titles that clearly were not related to the subject,studies in which tissue-engineered biomaterial were used only in laboratory or experimental animals,and in the absence of autologous cultured epithelial *** were also excluded if they were not published in English,had no disease background and adequate ***,we search all relevant abstract presented at two of the main urological meetings in the last 10 years:European Association of Urology(EAU)and American Urological Association(AUA).Results:A total of six articles,reporting the clinical use of tissue-engineered techniques in humans,were fully reviewed in our *** epithelial cells were harvested from the urethra(10 patients),the bladder(11 patients)and the mouth(104 patients).The tissue-engineered grafts were used in children for primary hypospadias repair in 16 cases,and in adults for posterior and anterior urethral strictures repair in 109 ***-engineered grafts were showed working better in children for primary hypospadias repair than in adults for urethral strictures ***:One hundred and twenty-five patients received tissue-engineered urethroplasty using cultured epithelial cells for primary hypospadias or urethral strictures *** studies demonstrate a high degree of heterogeneity respect to epithelial cells(from urethra,bladder,and mouth),type of scaffold,etiology,site of urethral stricture,number of patients,follow-up and outcomes.
