Coptotermes gestroi and Heterotermes tenuis have been described as important urban pests in Brazil. The establishment of control technologies using baits that consider the social behavior of termites requires a better knowledge of their foraging behavior. Thus, this study analyzed the feeding behavior of these species with three different forms of food placement： food on the surface of a substrate and food either partially or completely buried in the substrate. Experimental arenas were composed of a central chamber connected to three food chambers. Each central chamber contained 550 foragers of C. gestroi or 517 foragers of 11. tenuis. Blocks of Pinus elliottii were placed in the different food chambers. After 28 days, the consumption of each wood block and the percentage of foraging individuals recruited for food chambers were verified in relation to the total survival rate obtained for each one of the 20 replicates. Results showed that completely buried food was most consumed for H. tenuis and presented a higher recruitment rate of workers and soldiers for both species. Although the consumption had non-significant differences for C. gestroi, these termites exhibited a tendency to prefer completely buried food. in these conditions, it can be concluded that the forms of food placement used in the present research influenced the recruitment of individuals for both species. Data also suggests that when the foraging subterranean termites find food resources in the tunneling substrate, they tend to concentrate their efforts on it, a behavior regime that reduces exposure to external environment.

Background:The molecular heterogeneity of Alzheimer’s amyloid-β(Aβ)deposits extends well beyond the clas-sic Aβ1-40/Aβ1-42 dichotomy,substantially expanded by multiple post-translational modifications that increase the proteome *** truncated fragments consistently populate the brain Aβpeptidome,and their homeo-static regulation and potential contribution to disease pathogenesis are largely unknown.Aβ4-x peptides have been reported as major components of plaque cores and the limited studies available indicate their relative abundance in Alzheimer’s disease(AD).Methods:immunohistochemistry was used to assess the topographic distribution of Aβ4-x species in well-char-acterized AD cases using custom-generated monoclonal antibody 18H6-specific for Aβ4-x species and blind for full-length Aβ1-40/Aβ1-42-in conjunction with thioflavin-S and antibodies recognizing Aβx-40 and Aβx-42 *** dichroism,thioflavin-T binding,and electron microscopy evaluated the biophysical and aggregation/oligomerization properties of full-length and truncated synthetic homologues,whereas stereotaxic intracerebral injections of monomeric and oligomeric radiolabeled homologues in wild-type mice were used to evaluate their brain clearance ***:All types of amyloid deposits contained the probed Aβepitopes,albeit expressed in different proportions.Aβ4-x species showed preferential localization within thioflavin-S-positive cerebral amyloid angiopathy and cored plaques,strongly suggesting poor clearance characteristics and consistent with the reduced solubility and enhanced oligomerization of their synthetic *** vivo clearance studies demonstrated a fast brain efflux of N-termi-nally truncated and full-length monomeric forms whereas their oligomeric counterparts-particularly of Aβ4-40 and Aβ4-42-consistently exhibited enhanced brain ***:The persistence of aggregation-prone Aβ4-x proteoforms likely contributes to the process of

Jet grouting is one of the most popular soil improvement techniques,but its design usually involves great uncertainties that can lead to economic cost overruns in construction *** high dispersion in the properties of the improved material leads to designers assuming a conservative,arbitrary and unjustified strength,which is even sometimes subjected to the results of the test *** present paper presents an approach for prediction of the uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)of jet grouting columns based on the analysis of several machine learning algorithms on a database of 854 results mainly collected from different research *** selected machine learning model(extremely randomized trees)relates the soil type and various parameters of the technique to the value of the compressive *** the complex mechanism that surrounds the jet grouting process,evidenced by the high dispersion and low correlation of the variables studied,the trained model allows to optimally predict the values of compressive strength with a significant improvement with respect to the existing ***,this work proposes for the first time a reliable and easily applicable approach for estimation of the compressive strength of jet grouting columns.

We present an optically powered,intrinsically safe gas monitoring system to measure four essential environmental gases(CH_(4),CO_(2),CO and O_(2)),together with ambient temperature and pressure,for underground *** system is based on three key technologies developed at UNSW:(1)power-over-fbre(PoF)at 1550 nm using a single industry-standard,low-cost single-mode fbre(SMF)for both power delivery and information transmission,(2)liquid–crystal-based optical transducers for optical telemetry,and(3)ultra-low power consumption design of all ***,this approach allows each gas monitoring station to operate with less than 150 mW of optical power,meeting the intrinsic safety requirements specifed by the iEC60079-28 standard.A 2-month feld trial at BMA’s Broadmeadow underground mine proved the cabling compatibility to the mine’s existing optical network and the stability of the system *** with conventional electrically powered gas sensors,this technology bypasses the usual roadblocks of underground gas monitoring where electrical power is either unsafe or ***,using one fbre for both power delivery and communication enables longer distance coverage,reduces optical cabling and increases multiplexing possibilities and data throughput for better awareness of underground environment.
