coupled conditional nonlinear optimal perturbations and their application to ENSO ensemble forecasts

Limitations are existed in current ensemble forecasting initial perturbation methods for desc.ibing the interac.ions among various spheres of the Earth system. in this study, a new method is proposed, namely, the coupled conditional nonlinear optimal perturbation(c-cNOP) method, which incorporates multisphere interac.ions much appropriately. The El Nino-Southern Oscillation(ENSO) is a typical ocean-atmosphere “coupling”(or “interac.ion”) phenomenon. The c-cNOP method is applied to ensemble forecasting of ENSO. it is demonstrated that the c-cNOP method can generate coupled initial perturbations(cPs) that appropriately consider initial ocean-atmosphere coupling uncertainty for ENSO ensemble forecasts. Results reveal that the cPs effec.ively improve the ability of ENSO ensemble-mean forecasts in both temporal variability of Nio3.4 sea surface temperature anomalies(SSTAs) and spatial variability of ENSO mature-phase SSTAs. Notably, despite the weakest ocean-atmosphere coupling strength in the tropical Pacific occurring during the boreal spring and summer, cPs still capture the uncertainties of this weak coupling when ENSO predic.ions are initialized at these seasons. This performance of cPs significantly suppresses the rapid increase of ENSO predic.ion errors due to the high ocean-atmosphere coupling instability during these seasons, and thus effec.ively extends the lead time of skillful ENSO forecasting. Hence, the c-cNOP method is a suitable initial perturbation approach for ENSO ensemble forecast that can desc.ibe initial ocean-atmosphere coupling uncertainty. it is expected that the ccNOP method plays a significant role in predic.ions of other high-impact c.imate phenomena, and even future Earth system predic.ions.

Advancing high-voltage stability of layered sodium-ion oxides represents a pivotal avenue for their progress in energy storage *** this,a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms underpinning their structural deterioration at elevated voltages remains insufficiently *** this study,we unveil a layer delamination phenomenon of Na_(0.67)Ni_(0.3)Mn_(0.7)O_(2)(NNM)within the 2.0-4.3 V voltage,attributed to considerable volumetric fluctuations along the c-axis and lattice oxygen reac.ions induced by the simultaneous Ni^(3+)/Ni^(4+)and anion redox *** introducing Mg doping to diminished Ni-O antibonding,the anion oxidation-reduc.ion reac.ions are effec.ively mitigated,and the structural integrity of the P2 phase remains firmly intact,safeguarding ac.ive sites and precluding the formation of novel *** Na_(0.67)Mg_(0.05)Ni_(0.25)Mn_(0.7)O_(2)(NMNM-5)exhibits a specific capacity of100.7 mA h g^(-1),signifying an 83%improvement compared to the NNM material within the voltage of2.0-4.3 *** investigation underscores the intricate interplay between high-voltage stability and structural degradation mechanisms in layered sodium-ion oxides.

Three cases of microphysical characteristics and kinematic structures in the negative temperature region of summer mesoscale cloud systems over the eastern Tibetan Plateau(TP)were investigated using X-band dual-polarization *** time-height series of radar physical variables and mesoscale horizontal divergence δderived by quasi-vertical profiles(QVPs)indicated that the dendritic growth layer(DGL,-20°c to-10°c)was ubiquitous,with large-value zones of K_(DP)(specific differential phase),Z_(DR)(differential reflec.ivity),or both,and corresponded to various dynamic fields(ascent or descent).Ascents in the DGL of cloud systems with vigorous vertical development were c.incident with large-value zones of Z_(DR),signifying ice crystals with a large axis ratio,but with no obvious large values of K_(DP),which differs from previous *** is speculated that ascent in the DGL promoted ice crystals to undergo further growth before *** there was descent in the DGL,a high echo top corresponded to large values of K_(DP),denoting a large number concentration of ice crystals;but with the echo top descending,small values of K_(DP) *** is similar to previous results and reveals that a high echo top is conducive to the generation of ice *** ice particles fall to low levels(-10℃ to 0℃),they grow through riming,aggregation,or deposition,and may not be related to the kinematic *** is important to note that this study was only based on a limited number of cases and that further research is therefore needed.

incorporating a selenium(Se)positive electrode into aluminum(Al)-ion batteries is an effec.ive strategy for improving the overall battery ***,the cyc.ing stability of Se positive electrodes has challenges due to the dissolution of intermediate reac.ion *** this work,we aim to harness the advantages of Se while reducing its limitations by preparing a core-shell mesoporous carbon hollow sphere with a titanium nitride(c@TiN)host to load 63.9wt%Se as the positive electrode material for Al-Se *** the physical and chemical confinement offered by the hollow mesoporous carbon and TiN,the obtained core-shell mesoporous carbon hollow spheres coated with Se(Se@c@TiN)display superior utilization of the ac.ive material and remarkable cyc.ing *** a result,Al-Se batteries equipped with the as-prepared Se@c@TiN composite positive electrodes show an initial discharge specific capacity of 377 mAh·g^(-1)at a current density of 1000 mA·g^(-1)while maintaining a discharge specific capacity of 86.0 mAh·g^(-1)over 200 *** improved cyc.ing performance is asc.ibed to the high electrical conduc.ivity of the core-shell mesoporous carbon hollow spheres and the unique three-dimensional hierarc.ical arc.itecture of Se@c@TiN.

in this work,a new ZnO/coNiO_(2)/coO/c metal oxides composite is prepared by cost-effec.ive hydrothermal method coupled with annealing process under N_(2) ***,the oxidation-defect annealing environment is conducive to both morphology and component of the composite,which flower-like ZnO/coNiO_(2)/coO/c.is *** from good chemical stability of ZnO,high energy capacity of coNiO_(2) and coO and good conduc.ivity of c,the as-prepared sample shows promising electrochemical behavior,including the specific capacity of 1435 c·g^(-1) at 1 A·g^(-1),capacity retention of 87.3%at 20 A·g^(-1),and cyc.ing stability of 90.5%for 3000 cycles at 5 A·g^(-1),***,the prepared ZnO/coNiO_(2)/coO/c/NF//Ac aqueous hybrid supercapacitors device delivers the best specific energy of 55.9 W·h·kg^(-1) at 850 W·kg^(-1).The results reflect that the as-prepared ZnO/coNiO_(2)/coO/c microflowers are considered as high performance electrode materials for supercapacitor,and the strategy mentioned in this paper is benefit to prepare mixed metal oxides composite for energy conversion and storage.

The lubrication performance of liquids is severely restricted and is degraded in high-temperature environments. Stable and reliable lubrication in high temperature environments has been a long-standing goal in various industrial fields. in this study,WS_(2)and Ti_(3)c_(2)T_(x)MXene nanoflakes were used as oil-based lubricant additives to generate ultra-low fric.ion and even superlubricity(fric.ion coefficient of ~0.007) at elevated temperatures(400℃), which has hitherto not been ac.ieved by both individual pristine materials, WS_(2)and Ti_(3)c_(2)T_(x)MXene. Viscosity and thermogravimetric characterization revealed improvements in the high-temperature rheological properties and thermal stability of the lubricating base oil, indicating improved loadbearing and continuous lubrication capabilities at elevated temperatures. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy demonstrated that the formation of an iron/titanium/tungsten-rich oxide lubricious thin film at the sliding interface reduced the interfacial shear stress, which was responsible for the observed fric.ion and wear reduc.ions at high contact pressures(> 1.1 GPa). Although the titanium/tungsten oxide film was gradually removed after prolonged sliding, a sufficiently thick iron oxide film maintained a low fric.ion coefficient for at least 2 h. The improved surface quality facilitates the ac.ievement of ultra-low fric.ion and reduced wear. The proposed lubrication methodology has a broad utilization potential as a wear-reduc.ion strategy across various industrial fields at elevated temperatures.

Herein we proposed a data-driven high-throughput principle to screen high-performance single-atom materials for hydrogen evolution reac.ion(HER)and hydrogen sensing by combing the theoretical computations and a topology-based multi-scale convolution kernel mac.ine learning *** the rational training by 25 groups of data and predic.ion of all 168 groups of single-atom materials for HER and sensing,respec.ively,a high predic.ion accuracy(>0.931 R^(2) score)was ac.ieved by our *** show that the promising HER catalysts include Pt atoms in c_(4) and Sc atoms in c_(1)N_(3) coordination ***,Y atoms in c_(4) coordination environment and cd atoms in c_(2)N_(2)-ortho coordination environment were predicted with great potential as hydrogen sensing *** method provides a way to accelerate the discovery of innovative materials by avoiding the time-consuming empirical principles in experiments.
