This intriguing question has been asked constantly (Teizer, 2012;Czarnecki, 2013). Because the global construction industry produces tens of millions of products annually, even a small nano-impulse may be the cause of a huge change. The question is very important, but the answer could also be very significant because of the contra positions of'eco-efficient construction'as a civilisation challenge and'nanotechnology'as the contemporary mainstream in the development of technology.

Five thyreostats(TSs),namely tapazole,thiouracil,methylthiouracil,propylthiouracil,and phenylthiouracil,were determined in bovine urine using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry(UHPLC-MS/MS)in positive electrospray ionization *** and clean-up were achieved using a ChemElut cartridge with tert-butyl methyl ether,without a derivatization *** was achieved on an Acquity UPLC SS T3 *** mobile phase was acetonitrile and water containing 0.2%(v/v)formic *** mass spectrometer was operated in multiple reaction monitoring *** samples were spiked with TS solution at levels corresponding to 5,10,15,and 20μg/*** accuracy(internal standard corrected)ranged from 92%to 107%,with a repeatability precision(relative standard deviation,RSD)less than 15%for all five *** RSDs within-laboratory reproducibility was less than 26%.The decision limits(CCα)and detection capabilities(CCβ)were obtained from a calibration curve and were in the ranges of 3.1-6.1μg/L and 4.0-7.4μg/L,*** CCαand CCβvalues were below the recommended concentration,which was set at 10μg/*** results show that the described method is suitable for the direct detection of TSs in bovine *** method can also be used to determine TSs in porcine urine.

AIM:To estimate the amount of apoptosis among healthy HBsAg carriers,patients with chronic HBV infection treated wibh lamivudine and patients with chronic HCV infection treated with interferon alpha and *** of apoptosis was evaluated by serum sFas/sFasL concentration measurement. Moreover dependence between apoptosis and HBV-DNA or HCV-RNA levels was studied. METHODS:Eighty-six persons were included into study:34 healthy HBsAg carders,33 patients with chronic HBV infecl^on and 19 patients with chronic HCV *** levels of sFas/sFasL were measured by ELISA ***-DNA and HCV-RNA were measured by RT-PCR *** of sFas/sFasL were determined before and 2 and 12 wk after therapy in patients with chronic hepatitis B and C infection. HBV-DNA or HCV-RNA was detected before treatment and 6 mo after treatment. RESULTS:Twenty-four (71%) healthy HBsAg carders showed HBV-DNA over 10~5/mL,which was comparable to the patients with chronic hepatitis *** from HBV-DNA levels, the concentration of sFas among healthy HBsAg carders was comparable to healthy *** patients with chronic hepatitis B and C,the concentration of sFas was significantly higher in comparison to healthy HBsAg carriers and healthy *** chronic hepatitis B patients the concentration of sFas was decreased during lamivudine *** chronic hepatitis C patients the concentration of sFas was increased during IFN alpha and ribavirin treatment,sFasL was not detected in control *** sFasL occurred more frequently in chronic hepatitis C patients in comparison to chronic hepatitis B patients. CONCLUSION:There are no correlations between apoptosis and HBV-DNA *** ther is an association between apoptosis and activity of inflammation in patients with chronic HBV *** can be increased in patients with chronic hepatitis C by effective treatment which may be a result of apoptosis stimulation by IFN-α.

Objective To explore the biological properties of keratinocytes from differently-aged healthy human beings. Methods Keratinocytes from fetus,teenager and middle-aged groups were separated and cultured. The population doubling time (PDT) and cell growth curve in different cells were compared,and the cell cycles were analyzed by flow cytometry. Results ① In primary culture of keratinocytes,the adherence time in middle-aged group was longer than that in fetus and teenager groups. However,all cell morphology showed no obvious differences. In subculture of keratinocytes,with donator’s age increasing,time of cell adherence prolonged,passage number decreased and differences in cell morphology were obvious. ② The average PDT of keratinocytes was shorter in fetus group than in teenager and middle-aged groups. But difference in cell growth curve between different passages was not observed. ③ Keratinocytes showed G2/M period in fetus group but G0/G1 period in teenager and middle-aged groups mainly. Conclusion As age increases,the biological properties of keratinocytes change obviously.

Dear Editor, Most mitochondrial proteins are encoded by the nuclear genome and posttranslationally imported to mitochondria. The correct targeting is often ensured by an N-terminal exten- sion designated presequence. Upon import, the presequence is cleaved off in a reaction termed processing. Most of our knowledge regarding mitochondrial processing comes from analyses performed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In yeast, the mitochondrial processing peptidase （MPP） is responsible for processing of the majority of mitochondrial precursors, with a fraction of them undergoing a second step of processing, car- ried out by either metalloproteases （Octl/MIP, Icp55） or serine proteases （Imp, Pcpl）（reviewed in Teixeira and Glaser, 2012）. Unusual two-step processing in which both processing steps are carried out by MPP has been reported for yeast and human frataxin （Branda et al., 1999） and for Neurospora crassa mito- chondrial ATP synthase subunit 9 （Schmidt et al., 1984）.
