Subcutaneous em.hysem. is a condition that results from.introduction of air into soft tissues. In head and neck, it is com.only observed following fractures of paranasal sinuses. Less frequently, it m.y occur during surgical procedures for tooth rem.val, when air from.dental hand-pieces is forced into surgical site. Depending on its extension, it m.y involve vital spaces such as m.diastinum. This specific finding m.y induce life-threatening situations. The aim.of this article is to establish the incidence of subcutaneous em.hysem. am.ng 10,779 im.acted third m.lar surgical procedures and report the cases in which such com.lications had occurred. In this retrospective study, data collected from.10,779 third m.lar extraction procedures perform.d at Piracicaba School of Dentistry were evaluated for the occurrence of subcutaneous em.hysem.. Two cases of subcutaneous em.hysem. (0.018%) occurred following extraction of im.acted third m.lars. Both were associated with m.ndibular tooth and related to the use of dental air hand-piece. One of the cases involved subm.ndibular and buccal spaces while the other involved buccal and canine spaces. Regression of em.hysem. occurred spontaneously and postoperative recovery was uneventful. Subcutaneous em.hysem. following im.acted third m.lar extractions is rare and strongly associated with the use of air turbines. Follow-up and preservation are the treatm.nts of choice, but clinicians should be aware about the possibility of m.crobial spreading through facial spaces.

Com.lications in the healing process are challenging, especially in clinical situations of caloric restriction （CR）. The lasertherapy becom.s an im.ortant strategy that aids the repair, especially in CR. Thus, it is im.ortant to investigate the InGaAlP-660 nm.laser as an strategy to repair cutaneous wounds in rats subm.tted to 30% of CR and to understand the tissue repair in clinical situations of CR. Thirty-six m.le Wistar rats were used, of which half were fed with 30% less ration, and half with ad libitum.diet, for 21 days. Then, punch lesions of 1.5 cm.in diam.ter were m.de on the anim.ls backs, which were divided into： NR （no-restricted）, R （restricted）-both before lesion; C （control）, RC （restricted-control）, L （laser）, RL （restricted-laser）-after lesion. Sam.les of the skin/lesion/scar were collected on the 2nd, 7th and 14th days post-injury for histological, biochem.cal and m.lecular analyses. The R group showed reduction of body m.ss, epiderm.l/derm.l thickness, inflam.ation, angiogenesis, fibroplasia and collagenesis. The RL group showed control of inflam.ation, oxidative dam.ge and increase of antioxidants than RC, which probably favored angiogenesis, collagenesis and reepithelialization, sim.lar to C and L. Thus, 30% of CR im.aired the skin （before lesion）. In the lesion, lasertherapy has shown to be effective in tissue repair m.inly in CR status, being thus, the laser clinically im.ortant strategy to tissue repair in critical situations of caloric restriction.

Four genetically contrasting rice varieties (IAC-47, Bico Ganga, Arroz de Revenda and m.nteiga) according to Random.Am.lified Polym.rphic DNA (RAPD) analysis were assessed regarding expression of the genes OsNRT1.1, OsNRT2.1 and OsNRT2.2 and the nitrate uptake kinetics param.ters (Km.and Vm.x). Up to 250-fold increases in the induction of gene expression after nitrate resupply were observed for the high-affinity transporter (OsNRT2.1 and OsNRT2.2). However, no significant variations in Vm.x am.ng the varieties were obtained. The lower value of Km.of the IAC-47 cultivar in relation to the Arroz de Revenda variety suggests a greater role of high-affinity transporter genes. These results indicate that closer attention should be paid to the expression levels of these genes in selecting varieties aim.ng to enhance nitrogen uptake efficiency.

Biopolym.r Sponge for High Grade Renal Traum.: An Experim.ntal Study in Rabbits

Introduction: Acute blunt or open renal traum. som.tim.s requires conservative m.asure which involves the use of specific m.terials in order to adequately restore renal parenchim.. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of the sugar cane biopolym.r sponge in an experim.ntal m.del of renal traum. in rabbits. m.thods: Experim.ntal prospective study was paired with twelve New Zealand rabbits. After induction of renal traum. bilateral high-grade (grade 4-collecting system. according to AAST), the sugar cane biopolym.r sponge was used for hom.ostasis and reconstruction of the right renal parenchym. (experim.ntal group). The sam. procedure was perform.d in the left kidney, but using the Surgifoam. sponge (Control Group). The anim.ls were sacrificed after four weeks. Histological analysis was perform.d and the results were com.ared after statistically being evaluated. Results: Com.aring the experim.ntal group with the control, there was m.re inflam.atory reaction and prem.ture adhesions in the first one. Concerning the influence on efficacy and biocom.atibility of the biopolym.r, no serious com.lications like m.ssive bleeding, haem.tom., fistula or urinary stone form.tion were found in both groups. Conclusion: The sugar cane biopolym.r sponge dem.nstrated good efficacy in relation to hem.static control and reconstruction of the renal parenchym. without m.jor com.lications. Future studies m.y direct its routine use in urologic practice.

Consum.tion of onion has been associated with reduced incidence of chronic diseases. Phenolic, organosulfur and carbohydrate com.ounds present are largely responsible for these effects. This study exam.ned com.ositional variation for health-enhancing com.ounds in a genetically diverse collection of onion cultivars. Total antioxidant activity and arom. profiles were characterized. Significant variation in bulb concentration for total and individual phenolic com.ounds, thiosulfinates, carbohydrates, and total and soluble solids was found. The range of variation was particularly large (>50-fold difference between the cultivars with the highest and lowest content) for fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and the polyphenols quercetin, epigallocatechin gallate and epicatechin gallate. Am.no acid profiles varied significantly as well with substantial variation (~10 fold) observed in both total and essential am.no acids. Total antioxidant activity was positively correlated with polyphenols content, and quercetin in particular (r = 0.83), suggesting a m.jor contribution from.phenolic com.ounds to onion antioxidant properties. Significant positive correlation was also found between solids and thiosulfinates content (r = 0.74) and between solids and FOS (r = 0.81), suggesting a dilution/concentration effect for organosulfur com.ounds and FOS in onion bulbs. The present study revealed broad variation for health-enhancing com.ounds content in onion germ.lasm. which can be exploited in breeding program. aim.ng at increasing onion nutraceutical value.

A m.tant library of the bacterium.Xanthom.nas citri subsp. citri strain 306 pathotype A (Xac), the causative agent of m.st aggressive Asiatic type A citrus canker, was screened regarding altered canker sym.tom. after inoculations into Citrus sinensis and Citrus lim.nia host leaves. Twenty-six m.tants have shown phenotypic virulence changes and have respectively knocked out gene identified by sequencing. In vivo growth curves were obtained for nine m.tants to quantify how the m.tations could affect pathogen’s adaptability to growth inside and attack host plant infected tissue. Am.ng identified genes in m.tated strains, we could find those that until now had not been reported as being involved in Xac adaptation and/or virulence, such as predicted to encode for xylose repressor-like protein (XACΔxylR), Fe-S oxidoredutase (XACΔaslB), helicase IV (XACΔhelD), ubiquinol cytochrom. c oxidoreductase iron-sulfur subunit (XACΔpetA), chrom.som. partitioning protein (XACΔparB) and cell division protein FtsB (XACΔftsB), in addition to genes predicted to encode for hypothetical proteins. The new genes found in this study as being relevant to adaptation and virulence, im.rove the understanding of Xac fitness during citrus plant attack and canker sym.tom. developm.nt.

This study aim.d to evaluate the m.nim.m.Inhibitory Concentration (m.C) and m.nim.m.Bactericidal Concentration (m.C) of Coffea canephora aqueous extract (Cc), trigonelline (Tg) and 5-caffeoylquinic acid (5-CQA) against cariogenic m.croorganism.: Streptococcus parasanguinis ATCC 903 (SP), Lactobacillus rham.osus ATCC 9595 (LR);and pathogens related to periodontal disease: Porphyrom.nas gingivalis ATCC 33277 (PG), Fusobacterium.nucleatum.ATCC 25586 (FN), Prevotella interm.dia ATCC 49046 (PI) and Prevotella nigrescens ATCC 33563 (PN). Different concentrations of Cc (0.15625 to 10 m./m.), Tg and 5-CQA (0.005 to 10.24 m./m.) were tested. Chlorhexidine (0.05%) was used as positive control and the substances without the inoculum.com.rised the blank control. The Cc showed bacteriostatic action against SP (m.C = 5 m./m.) and LR (m.C = 10 m./m.). Tg showed bacteriostatic action against SP (m.C = 2.56 to 1.28 m./m.), LR (m.C = 2.56 m./m.), PG (m.C = 2.56 to 1.28 m./m.), FN (m.C = 5.12 m./m.), PN (m.C = 2.56 m./m.), and PI (m.C = 2.56 to 1.28 m./m.). Also, Tg showed bactericide properties against SP (m.C = 2.56 m./m.), PG (m.C = 2.56 m./m.), FN (m.C = 10.24 m./m.), PN (m.C = 5.12 m./m.), and PI (m.C = 2.56 m./m.). Although 5-CQA has previously shown activity against Streptococcus m.tans, in the present study, it showed no activity against all tested m.croorganism.. C. canephora extract only showed antibacterial activity against cariogenic m.croorganism., not presenting action against periodontal pathogens. It was concluded that trigonelline presented the best effect against all pathogens tested, therefore coffee extracts with higher trigonelline content should be tested against these specific pathogens.

The study aim.d to establish floral com.osition, diversity levels, category size, phytosociological structure, com.ercial use and ecological group of species present in the regeneration of open om.rophile forest in southern Am.zon, Brazil. Data were collected at S?o Nicolau farm. in the m.nicipality of Cotrigua?u, northwest of m.to Grosso state, coordinates 51°9'19.5"S and 58°14'53"W. One hundred plots of 10 × 10 m.were allocated. All individuals between 29.9 and 59.9 cm.had circum.erence at breast height (CAP) m.asure, with sub-plots of 5 × 5 m.which were m.asured in all subjects between 1:50 m.in height 29.9 cm.CAP and sub-plots of 2 × 2 m.for individuals between 0.30 to 1.5 m.tall. The inform.tion obtained in the field were processed in excel spreadsheet. The results showed the occurrence of 610 individuals belonging to 82 species, 34 plant fam.lies, with a diversity index of Shannon & Weaver’s 2.77. The index of value of im.ortance showed species Protium.robustum. m.quira calophilla and Inga fagifolium.with greater ecological im.ortance in fitocenose. The higher values for Natural Regeneration were the species Protium.robustum. m.quira calophilla and Inga fagifolium.with 16.42, 8.03 and 7.76 respectively.
