Introduction: Acute blunt or open renal trauma sometimes requires conservative measure which involves the use of specific materials in order to adequately restore renal parenchima. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of the sugar cane biopolymer sponge in an experimental model of renal trauma in rabbits. Methods: Experimental prospective study was paired with twelve New Zealand rabbits. After induction of renal trauma bilateral high-grade (grade 4-collecting system, according to AAST), the sugar cane biopolymer sponge was used for homeostasis and reconstruction of the right renal parenchyma (experimental group). The same procedure was performed in the left kidney, but using the Surgifoam? sponge (Control Group). The animals were sacrificed after four weeks. Histological analysis was performed and the results were compared after statistically being evaluated. Results: Comparing the experimental group with the control, there was more inflammatory reaction and premature adhesions in the first one. Concerning the influence on efficacy and biocompatibility of the biopolymer, no serious complications like massive bleeding, haematoma, fistula or urinary stone formation were found in both groups. Conclusion: The sugar cane biopolymer sponge demonstrated good efficacy in relation to hemostatic control and reconstruction of the renal parenchyma without major complications. future studies may direct its routine use in urologic practice.

MI （mitral insufficiency） is the most common valvulopathy currently, with surgery being the gold standard treatment. However, about half of patients with severe MI have a high surgical risk because of their age or comorbidities, therefore surgery is contraindicated, In this context, Mitraclip appears, a device that allows the percutaneous treatment of MI and which is presented as a safe alternative and able to improve the quality of life for these patients. This work describes the first procedure performed at a referral hospital in western Parana-Brazil. It is a male patient with mitral valve insufficiency due to mitral prolapse, submitted to endovascular therapy due to the high surgical risk because of his advanced age, presence of comorbidities and left ventricular dysfunction. from this modality, partial regurgitation improvement and intense symptomatic relief were obtained, demonstrating the great potential of the MitraClip device to improve the quality of life of its patients.

Consumption of onion has been associated with reduced incidence of chronic diseases. Phenolic, organosulfur and carbohydrate compounds present are largely responsible for these effects. This study examined compositional variation for health-enhancing compounds in a genetically diverse collection of onion cultivars. Total antioxidant activity and aroma profiles were characterized. Significant variation in bulb concentration for total and individual phenolic compounds, thiosulfinates, carbohydrates, and total and soluble solids was found. The range of variation was particularly large (>50-fold difference between the cultivars with the highest and lowest content) for fructo-oligosaccharides (fOS) and the polyphenols quercetin, epigallocatechin gallate and epicatechin gallate. Amino acid profiles varied significantly as well with substantial variation (~10 fold) observed in both total and essential amino acids. Total antioxidant activity was positively correlated with polyphenols content, and quercetin in particular (r = 0.83), suggesting a major contribution from phenolic compounds to onion antioxidant properties. Significant positive correlation was also found between solids and thiosulfinates content (r = 0.74) and between solids and fOS (r = 0.81), suggesting a dilution/concentration effect for organosulfur compounds and fOS in onion bulbs. The present study revealed broad variation for health-enhancing compounds content in onion germplasm, which can be exploited in breeding programs aiming at increasing onion nutraceutical value.

This paper presents equipment for early detection of failures in the insulation of power transformers, checking existing partial discharges inside. The equipment involves hardware, control and signal acquisition software, and signal analysis software. This equipment has a set of algorithms that were made with intelligent extraction techniques and interpretation of data. The degradation diagnosis of the equipment insulation is based on digital signal processing algorithms for extraction of features and also in artificial intelligence algorithms that allies a mining involving all the data linked to the equipment throughout its operating life can make an assessment of the operating conditions of the equipment and suggest interventions and provide an estimated time so that they have to be made.

A mutant library of the bacterium Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri strain 306 pathotype A (Xac), the causative agent of most aggressive Asiatic type A citrus canker, was screened regarding altered canker symptoms after inoculations into Citrus sinensis and Citrus limonia host leaves. Twenty-six mutants have shown phenotypic virulence changes and have respectively knocked out gene identified by sequencing. In vivo growth curves were obtained for nine mutants to quantify how the mutations could affect pathogen’s adaptability to growth inside and attack host plant infected tissue. Among identified genes in mutated strains, we could find those that until now had not been reported as being involved in Xac adaptation and/or virulence, such as predicted to encode for xylose repressor-like protein (XACΔxylR), fe-S oxidoredutase (XACΔaslB), helicase IV (XACΔhelD), ubiquinol cytochrome c oxidoreductase iron-sulfur subunit (XACΔpetA), chromosome partitioning protein (XACΔparB) and cell division protein ftsB (XACΔftsB), in addition to genes predicted to encode for hypothetical proteins. The new genes found in this study as being relevant to adaptation and virulence, improve the understanding of Xac fitness during citrus plant attack and canker symptoms development.

Sward Structural Characteristics and Performance of Beef Heifers Reared under Rotational Grazing Management on Campos Grassland

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of two rest intervals on structural sward characteristics and productive performance of beef heifers reared on Campos grassland managed on rotational grazing. The treatments were two intervals between grazing of 375 and 750 DD (degree days), based on thermal cumulative sum for leaf expansion of native grasses belonging to two functional groups. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with two treatments and three replications. The tested animals were beef heifers with initial age of 12 months and average weight of 185.2 ± 17.4 kg. Measures in the pasture were: herbage mass, mass of green leaf blades, stem mass, dead material mass and green leaf allowance. The 750 DD rest interval presented higher herbage mass (24%), higher green herbage mass and 19% more leaves in the canopy. This rest interval also presents a high proportion of dead material and stems in the sward structure. In the other way, the 375 DD rest interval presents better chemical characteristics, with 20% more crude protein in the hand plucking samples. Heifers’ dry matter intake was similar between the rest intervals (2.04% of live weight) and the bite mass was also similar (0.22 g DM per bite) but the animal performance was higher in the 375 DD rest interval. The stocking density showed similarity between treatments with an average of 875 kg/LW/ha. The live weight gain per area was higher in 40 kg/LW/ha (P = 0.117) for 375 DD rest interval, reaching 251 kg/LW/ha produced over the 149 experimental days. Based on these results, we can conclude that the treatment of shortest interval between defoliation gave the highest gain individual animals in warm seasons.

Soil Physical Properties and Grain Yield Influenced by Cover Crops and Crop Rotation

The crop yield is related to several factors, among these, soil tillage, soil compaction and crop rotation. This study aimed to evaluate the winter cover crops and crop rotation influence on soil physical properties and grain yield of dry beans, maize and soybean for two growing seasons. Three experiments were conducted, corresponding to dry beans, maize and soybean crops. It was used the randomized block design with three treatments and four replications consisted by 3 × 10 m plots. The treatments were: two cover crops systems and crop rotation in no-till, and the control, consisting of winter fallow and conventional tillage. The cover crop dry matter, soil physical properties and grain yield for dry beans, maize and soybean in the two growing seasons were evaluated. Crop rotation systems and cover crops showed a trend to increase maize and soybean yields. Crop rotation in no-till increases soil compaction in the superficial layer compared to conventional tillage, but does not reduce the dry beans, maize and soybean yields.

研究旨在评估在7～63日龄仔猪日粮中添加血浆和（或）酵母提取物对仔猪日增质量、日采食量和饲料转化率及肠道形态的影响。试验采用288头体质量为（2．57±0．05）kg的7日龄仔猪，按照日粮差别随机分为4组，每组6个重复，每重复12头仔猪。试验预备期I（7～21日龄）、预备期II（22—35日龄）及第1阶段（36～49日龄）各组日粮为对照组（CD组），不添加血浆或酵母提取物；血浆组（PL组），添加6％、4％和2％血浆；酵母提取物组（YE组），添加6％、4％和2％酵母提取物；血浆＋酵母提取物组（PL＋YE组），血浆和酵母提取物分别添加3％、2％和1％。第1I阶段（50—63日龄）所有仔猪饲喂相同的饲料。7～21和7～28日龄没有观察到生长性能的差别，但是第7天一第35天PL＋YE组的日增质量有优势（CD、PL、YE和PL＋YE组的日增质量分别为268、278、271和288g）。观察7～49及7～63日龄发现，PL＋YE组仔猪的日增质量（分别为330和519g）和日采食量（分别为307和647g）都比CD组的日增质量（分别为295和486g）和日采食量（分别为266和594g）要高。不同组间的肠道形态没有显著差异（P〉0．05）。试验结果表明，血浆和酵母提取物提高7～63日龄的仔猪日增质量，但是没有影响到仔猪的肠道形态。

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are used essentially for spatial analysis. They can lead to the development of methods for analyzing and planning the use of geographical space and, consequently, are helpful to the decision making process, assisting those responsible for planning the use of a certain territory. This article is a result of the “Project for the Integrated and Sustainable Management of Trans- boundary Hydric Resources of the Amazon Basin considering Variability and Climate Change”, which has the goal of strengthening institutional guidelines in order to plan and execute activities related to the protection of the land, hydric resources and sustainable management of the Amazon Basin, considering the existing impacts of climatic changes. This article aims at analyzing the process of building and implementing the GeoAmazonas GIS as one of the instruments for managing the basin, including its contribution for standardizing different data sources in the entire area of the basin and the identification of conflicts related the use of water resources and vulnerability situations.
