Cardiovascular disease(CVD)is the major cause of death in many regions around the world,and several of its risk factors might be linked to diets.To improve public health and the understanding of this topic,we look at the recent Minnesota Coronary Experiment(MCE)analysis that used t-test and Cox model to evaluate CVD risks.However,these parametric methods might suffer from three problems:small sample size,right-censored bias,and lack of long-term evidence.To overcome the first of these challenges,we utilize a nonparametric permutation test to examine the relationship between dietary fats and serum total cholesterol.To address the second problem,we use a resampling-based rank test to examine whether the serum total cholesterol level affects CVD deaths.For the third issue,we use some extra-Framingham Heart Study(FHS)data with an A/B test to look for meta-relationship between diets,risk factors,and CVD risks.We show that,firstly,the link between low saturated fat diets and reduction in serum total cholesterol is strong.Secondly,reducing serum total cholesterol does not robustly have an impact on CVD hazards in the diet group.Lastly,the A/B test result suggests a more complicated relationship regarding abnormal diastolic blood pressure ranges caused by diets and how these might affect the associative link between the cholesterol level and heart disease risks.This study not only helps us to deeply analyze the MCE data but also,in combination with the long-term FHS data,reveals possible complex relationships behind diets,risk factors,and heart disease.

In plants,the genome structure of hybrids changes compared with their parents,but the effects of these changes in hybrids remain elusive.Comparing reciprocal crosses between Col×C24 and C24×Col in Arabidopsis using high-throughput chromosome conformation capture assay(Hi-C)analysis,we found that hybrid three-dimensional(3D)chromatin organization had more long-distance interactions relative to parents,and this was mainly located in promoter regions and enriched in genes with heterosis-related pathways.The interactions between euchromatin and heterochromatin were increased,and the compartment strength decreased in hybrids.In compartment domain(CD)boundaries,the distal interactions were more in hybrids than their parents.In the hybrids of CURLY leAF(clf)mutants clfCol×clfC24and clfC24×clfCol,the heterosis phenotype was damaged,and the long-distance interactions in hybrids were fewer than in their parents with lower H3K27me3.ChIP-seq data revealed higher levels of H3K27me3 in the region adjacent to the CD boundary and the same interactional homo-trans sites in the wild-type(WT)hybrids,which may have led to more long-distance interactions.In addition,the differentially expressed genes(DEGs)located in the boundaries of CDs and loop regions changed obviously in WT,and the functional enrichment for DEGs was different between WT and clf in the longdistance interactions and loop regions.our findings may therefore propose a new epigenetic explanation of heterosis in the Arabidopsis hybrids and provide new insights into crop breeding and yield increase.

As the main load bearing component,the steel strand has a significant impact on the safety of civil infrastructure.Real-time monitoring of steel strand stress distribution throughout the damage process is an impor-tant aspect of civil infrastructure health assessment.Hence,this study proposes an optical-electrical co-sensing(OECS)smart steel strand with the DOFS and CCFPI embedded in.It can simultaneously measure small strains in the initial damage phase with high accuracy and obtain information in the large deformation phase with relatively low precision.Several experiments were carried out to test its sensing performance.It shows both DOFS and CCFPI have good linearity,repeatability and hysteresis.In comparison to DOFS,CCFPI has a relatively lower accuracy and resolution,but a large enough measurement range to tolerate the large strain in the event of a steel strand failure.To verify the reliability of the proposed smart steel strand in real structures,the strand strain distribution in the full damage process of bonded prestressed beams under four-point bending loading was monitored using the smart steel strand as a prestressing tendon.The strain measured by the OECS steel strand is shown to reflect the deformation and stiffness variation of prestressed beams under different load.

The Euler angle estimation is a calibration method for vector data measured by the magnetometer on a satellite. It is used to find the relative rotation between the coordinate system of the magnetometer and the satellite(usually determined by Star Imagers).Before launch of the low-orbit, low-inclination Macau Science Satellite-1(known as MSS-1), we simulated the estimation of Euler angles by using the magnetic measurements of the in-orbit Swarm and China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite(noted as CSES), with various data combinations. In this study, 11 data sets were designed to analyze the estimation results for the MSS-1 orbit by using a joint estimation method of the geomagnetic field model parameters and Euler angles. For the model results, we found that all the spatial power spectral lines showed behavior consistent with that of the CHAOS-7.8 model at low degrees(corresponding to large-scale magnetic signals). The spectra of models without global data coverage deviated much more(by a maximum of ～104 nT2) from those of the CHAOS-7.8 model at higher degrees. For models with global data coverage and with various data combinations, the spectral lines were distributed similarly. Moreover, the models with accordant power spectral distributions demonstrated different Euler angle estimations. As more vector data at higher latitudes were included, the estimated Euler angles varied monotonically in all three directions.The models with vector data in the same latitude range showed similar Euler angle results, regardless of whether the poleward scalar data were included. The largest value difference was found between the models using vector data within ±40° latitudes and those using vector data within ±60° latitudes, which reached to ～28″. Therefore, we concluded that the inversion of the spherical harmonic Gauss coefficients in our tests was mainly affected by the spatial coverage range of the data, whereas the estimation of Euler angles largely depended on the latitude range where the vector data could be obtained. Nanocomposites of graphene quantum dots(GQDs)modified gadolinium oxide(Gd_(2)O_(3))particles were successfully synthesized.In addition,the effects of the amount of GQDs and the particle size of Gd_(2)O_(3)on the properties of nanocomposites were investigated.The structures and properties of nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,field emission scanning electron microscopy,transmission electron microscopy,photoluminescence spectrometry,and magnetic resonance imaging.The results show that the synthesized particles Gd_(2)O_(3)/GQD are spherical with a diameter of approximately 40 nm and have excellent fluorescence and magnetic property,and its relaxation rate(r_(1)=25.18(mmol/L)^(-1)/s)is higher than that of the typical commercial contrast agents Gd-DTPA(r_(1)=4.5(mmol/L)^(-1)/s),The fluorescence property of Gd_(2)O_(3)/GQD is optimized by varying the V_(GQDs):V_(Gd2O3)ratio,and 1:1 ratio of V_(GQDs):V_(Gd2O3)results in the best fluorescence property.The large particles of Gd_(2)O_(3)improve the relaxation property of nanocomposites.Therefore,the nanocomposites Gd_(2)O_(3)/GQD with magnetic and fluorescence characteristics can be used in biological imaging,drug targeting,and in-vivo diagnostic analysis.

Examining the Spatiotemporal Dynamics and Determinants of Land Urbanization in Prefecture-level Cities,China

Examining the spatiotemporal dynamics and determinants of land urbanization is critical for promoting healthy urban development and the rational use of land resources.Based on the dataset consisting of land use change data and selected factors in 2010 and2020,this study used visual analysis to reveal the spatiotemporal dynamics of land urbanization across prefecture-level cities in China.Meanwhile,the driving forces underlying land urbanization were examined by using geographical detector technique.Following are the findings:1)we find that there exist notable spatial variances in land urbanization across prefecture-level cities.Currently,the differentiation in land urbanization between the northern and southern cities is more pronounced than that between the coastal and inland cities,or between the eastern and western cities.Prefecture-level cities located in central and western China have experienced the most rapid growth in land urbanization.Conversely,the growth rate in northeastern China is the lowest,while the velocity in eastern China remains relatively stable.By using spatial autocorrelation analysis,this study reveals that the land urbanization level in prefecture-level cities has significant spatial agglomeration.2)We further find that land urbanization in China is influenced by factors related to urban land supply and demand,and urban population growth,economic growth,land financial and political incentive have greater impact on land urbanization than other factors.3)We also find that the impacts of determinants on China’s land urbanization vary over time,the explanatory power of economic development increased,while the explanatory power of state forces declined.We argue that integrating the supply and demand factors of land urbanization can provide a more comprehensive understanding of the driving mechanisms underlying land urbanization in China and other transitional countries,and help decision-makers in these countries formulate more detailed and specific land urbanization policies.

Cell-to-cell and cell-to-environment communications are critical to the growth and development of plants.Cell surface-localized receptor-like kinases(RLKs)are mainly involved in sensing various extracellular signals to initiate their corresponding cellular responses.As important vegetative organs for higher plants to adapt to a terrestrial living situation,roots play a critical role for the survival of plants.It has been demonstrated that RLKs control many biological processes during root growth and development.In this review,we summarize several key regulatory processes during Arabidopsis root developm ent in which RLKs play critical roles.We also put forward a number of relevant questions that are required to be explored in future studies.

Automated machine learning(AutoML)pruning methods aim at searching for a pruning strategy automatically to reduce the computational complexity of deep convolutional neural networks(deep CNNs).However,some previous work found that the results of many Auto-ML pruning methods cannot even surpass the results of the uniformly pruning method.In this paper,the ineffectiveness of Auto-ML pruning,which is caused by unfull and unfair training of the supernet,is shown.A deep supernet suffers from unfull training because it contains too many candidates.To overcome the unfull training,a stage-wise pruning(SWP)method is proposed,which splits a deep supernet into several stage-wise supernets to reduce the candidate number and utilize inplace distillation to supervise the stage training.Besides,a wide supernet is hit by unfair training since the sampling probability of each channel is unequal.Therefore,the fullnet and the tinynet are sampled in each training iteration to ensure that each channel can be overtrained.Remarkably,the proxy performance of the subnets trained with SWP is closer to the actual performance than that of most of the previous AutoML pruning work.Furthermore,experiments show that SWP achieves the state-of-the-art in both CIFAR-10 and ImageNet under the mobile setting.
