This paper presents a genetic algorithms approach for the optimization of a fed-batch penicillin fermentation process. A customized float-encoding genetic algorithm is developed and implemented to a benchmark fed-batch penicillin fermentation process. Off-line optimization of the initial conditions and set points are carried out in two stages for a single variable and multiple variables. Further investigations with on-line optimization have been carried out to demonstrate that the yield can be significantly improved with an optimal feed rate profile. The results have shown that the proposed approaches can be successfully applied to optimization problems of fed-batch fermentation to improve the operation of such processes.

BACKGROUND The phrase “floating knee is a flail knee joint,” referring to ipsilateral femoral and tibial fractures,was first used by Blake and Mc Bryde in *** condition is often caused by a high-energy trauma with often extensive injury to the soft tissues,and is accompanied by life-threatening systemic complications,including head,chest or abdominal injuries and a high incidence of fat *** knee is a severe and uncommon injury *** SUMMARY A 27-year-old man sustained multiple injuries when the electric motorcycle he was riding was hit by a *** injuries included traumatic hypovolemic shock,comminuted and open type II fractures of the left femoral shaft,fracture of the right femoral shaft,comminuted fracture of the bilateral tibial and fibular shaft,and multiple lacerations and abrasions on his forehead,lower lip,neck and *** diagnosis was simultaneous bilateral floating knee complicated with soft tissue *** emergency treatment and the exclusion of life-threating complications,open reduction and internal fixation were successfully performed using plates and screws in the bilateral femoral and tibial *** Simultaneous bilateral floating knee is a rare and severe injury *** treatment is challenging,and *** present a case report of a young adult who suffered from bilateral floating knees during road traffic *** also offer our treatment experience of this complex injury and review past literature.

Spatial and temporal distribution of octylphenol （OP） and nonylphenol （NP） in Mai Po Marshes, a subtropical estuarine wetland in Hong Kong, were investigated. Surface water samples were collected every month from 11 sites during the period of September- December 2004. Concentrations of OP and NP ranged from 11.3 to 348 ng/L and from 29 to 2591 ng/L, respectively. The high levels of NP and OP were found in November and December than in September and October. The levels of OP and NP have no significant spatial differences except September. Total organic matter in the sediments appeared to be an important factor in controlling the fate of these compounds in the aquatic environment.

BACKGROUND Unilateral exophthalmos is often caused by inflammation, neoplasm, infection,metabolic disease, vascular disorder and several other less common *** sympathetic dystrophy related to unilateral exophthalmos has not been reported in the past *** SUMMARY We describe a 45-year-old female with unilateral exophthalmos caused by reflex sympathetic dystrophy and its unexpected spontaneous disappearance after a standard anterior cervical discectomy and fixation operation with two PEEK interbody cages and a plate. To our surprise, the patient’s left unilateral exophthalmos improved spontaneously in the morning on postoperative day 2-with no relapse, without any further medication, as of seven years. We have named this condition "cervicogenic exophthalmos."CONCLUSION We would inform other clinicians that unilateral exophthalmos was caused not only by inflammation, vascular disorder, infection, neoplasm, or metabolic disease, but also by reflex sympathetic dystrophy related with cervicogenic spondylosis. To the best of our knowledge, ours is the first related case report and use of the term "cervicogenic exophthalmos" after reviewing previous literature.

This study assessed the quality and biological activity of Vietnamese single-bulb black garlic(SBG)by investigating the effect of different temperatures(60,65,70,and 75℃)on physicochemical properties during the heat treatment *** optimal treating conditions accounted for the highest concentration of antioxidants were 70℃for 42 *** SBG.70 had a higher content of reducing sugar,protein,flavonoid,and polyphenol in comparison with the white garlic and the *** activity of single-bulb white garlic and SBG were measured via DPPH,phosphomolybdenum,and H2O2 radicals,as well as a reduction *** antimicrobial activity was assessed by the multi-concentration dilution method;the sample treated at 70℃displayed the strongest activity against four microbial strains with MIC values for ***,***,***,and *** of 64,128,128,and 64μg/mL,***,only two SBG samples aged at 70℃and 75℃were bacteriostatic to *** with MIC values of 32 and 64μg/mL,respectively.

Objective： To investigate whether three strains of probiotics, L. acidophilus, L. rhamnosus, and L. sporogenes, had significant inhibitive effects on Helicobacter pylori（H. pylori）. Methods： This is a 4-week, randomly assigned, parallel-group, doubled-blind, and placebo-controlled study. Fifty patients with a positive H. pylori infection urea breath test（△UBT） result 〉 10% and without ulcer symptoms were randomized into a treatment group and a placebo group by a computer generated allocation sheet with 1：1. These subjects took one capsule of probiotics or placebo twice daily. The primary measurement was the change in △UBT values. Results： The △UBT values during the 4-week treatment period and the 2-week follow-up period were not significantly different between the treatment group and the placebo group, indicating that the inhibitive effects on H. pylori were comparable between both groups. The monocyte count（%） was 5.77±1.11 in the treatment group versus 5.09±1.12 in the placebo group（P=0.044）, and the basophile count was 0.55±0.32 in the treatment group versus 0.36±0.23 in the placebo group（P=0.024） at week 2 of the treatment period, both of which reached statistical significance. The monocyte count was 5.75±1.26 in the treatment group and 4.72±0.99 in the placebo group at the end of the follow-up period（P=0.003）. Conclusions： There was no significant inhibitive effects of the three probiotic strains（L. acidophilus, L. rhamnosus, and L. sporogenes） on H. pylori. Probiotics can not play the same role as antibiotics in the eradication of H. pylori, the role of probiotics is likely to be important as adjuvant to the triple or quadruple therapy for H. pylori, especially in resistance cases.

AIM： To isolate putative pancreatic stem cells （PSCs） from human adult tissues of pancreas duct using serumfree, conditioned medium. The characterization of surface phenotype of these PSCs was analyzed by flow cytometry. The potential for pancreatic lineage and the capability of β-cell differentiation in these PSCs were evaluated as well. METHODS： By using serum-free medium supplemented with essential growth factors, we attempted to isolate the putative PSCs which has been reported to express nestin and pdx-1. The MatrigelTM was employed to evaluate the differential capacity of isolated cells. Dithizone staining, insulin content/secretion measurement, and immunohistochemistry staining were used to monitor the differentiation. Fluorescence activated cell sorting （FACS） was used to detect the phenotypic markers of putative PSCs. RESULTS： A monolayer of spindle-like cells was cultivated. The putative PSCs expressed pdx-1 and nestin. They were also able to differentiate into insulin-, glucagon-, and somatostatin-positive cells. The spectrum of phenotypic markers in PSCs was investigated; a similarity was revealed when using human bone marrow-derived stem cells as the comparative experiment, such as CD29, CD44, CD49, CD50, CD51, CD62E, PDGFR-α, CD73 （SH2）, CD81, CD105（SH3）. CONCLUSION： In this study, we successfully isolated PSCs from adult human pancreatic duct by using serumfree medium. These PSCs not only expressed nestin and pdx-1 but also exhibited markers attributable to mesenchymal stem cells. Although work is needed to elucidate the role of these cells, the application of these PSCs might be therapeutic strategies for diabetes mellitus.

Pattern Formation Control Using QR-Code for Mobile Robots

The article presents multi-pattern formation exchange of mobile robots according to the image signals, programs motion paths using A＊ searching algorithm, and avoids the collision points of motion paths. The system contains an image system, a grid based motion platform, some wireless Radio Frequency （RF） modules and five mobile robots. We use image recognition algorithm to classify variety pattern formation according to variety Quick Response （QR） code symbols on the user interface of the supervised computer. The supervised computer controls five mobile robots to execute formation exchange and presents the movement scenario on the grid based motion platform. We have been developed some pattern formations according to game applications, such as long snake pattern formation, phalanx pattern formation, crane wing pattern formation, sword pattern formation, cone pattern formation, sward pattern tbrmation, T pattern formation, rectangle pattern formation and so on. We develop the user interface of the multi-robot system to program motion paths for variety pattern formation exchange according to the minimum displacement. In the experimental results, the supervised computer recognizes the various QR-code symbols using image system and decides which pattern formation to be selected on real-time. Mobile robots can receive the pattern formation command from the supervised computer, present the movement scenario from the original pattern formation to the assigned pattern formation on the motion platform, and avoid other mobile robots on real-time.
