Macrozoospermia,characterized by the presence of largeheaded spermatozoa usually carrying several flagella,is one of the most severe phenotypes of male *** in most cases,the gametes are chromosomally abnormal and cannot be used for assisted reproductive technologies(ART)(Ray et al.,2017).In 2007,subjects from consanguineous families were shown to carry the same homozygous deleterious AURKC variant(NM_001015878.2:c.144delC,later renamed c.145delC,***49TrpfsTer23),establishing AURKC as the first and main gene associated with macrozoospermia(Dieterich et al.,2007).Using flow cytometry,all spermatozoa from patients homozygous for the c.145delC variant were shown to be tetraploid,highlighting a cytokinesis blockage of the first meiotic divisions thus confirming that ART cannot be successful for these patients(Dieterich et al.,2009).

Background:Ceiba pentandra is a medicinal plant used as alternative therapy to control parasitic nematodes in ***:This study aims to investigate anti-parasitic effect of aqueous stem back extract of Ceiba pentandra(L.)Gaertn through the evaluation of its anthelmintic,anti-inflammatory and analgesic ***:In vitro,the efficacy of aqueous extract(75 to 2400μg·mL−1)diluted in phosphate buffered saline(PBS)was tested against three stages of the life cycle of Haemonchus contortus through larval migration inhibition assay(LMIA),egg hatch assay(EHA),and adult worms motility inhibition assay(AMIA).In vivo,anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive properties of the aqueous extract(150 and 300 mg·kg−1)was evaluated on rodent using phlogistic and algic ***:Significant inhibition activity(P<0.05)was obtained on EHA with the greatest inhibition of 46.63%obtained at 2400μg·mL−*** plant treatment dramatically(P<0.05)inhibited L3 larval migration as compared to *** highest inhibition rate was 53.33%at 1200μg·mL−*** of polyvinylpolyrrolidone(PVPP)to the extract significantly(P<0.01)reduced at 38.6%the activity of the plant extract on larval migration compared to extract without *** Ceiba pentandra extract reduced(P<0.05)worm motility after 24 h post exposure as compared to *** vitro,aqueous extract significantly(P<0.05)inhibited the paw inflammation induced by carragenine,with a significant(P<0.05)reduction of the number of abdominal contortions induced by acetic acid to 41.11%at 300 mg·kg−1 and the paw licking time induced by formaline in both phases to 57.22%and 63.59%at 300 mg·kg−1 likened to ***:In vitro results suggest that,this plant possess anti-parasitic *** and anti-inflammatory effects of *** can contribute to its anti-parasitic property.

Retrospective study of a cohort of adult patients with hematological malignancies in a tropical area

AIM: To review the characteristics of hematological malignancies in tropical areas, and to focus on the specific difficulties regarding their management. METHODS: This is a retrospective narrative review of cases of patients with hematological malignancies. All medical files of patients with malignant disease whose treatment was coordinated by the HematoOncology service of the Cayenne Hospital in French Guiana between the 1st of January 2010 and the 31 st of December 2012 were reviewed. Clinical data were extracted from the medical files and included: Demographic data, comorbidities, serological status for human immunodeficiency virus, human T-lymphotropic virus 1(HTLV1), hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virusinfections, cytology and pathology diagnoses, disease extension, treatment, organization of disease management, and follow-up. The subgroup of patients with hematological malignancies and virus-related malignancies were reviewed. Cases involving patients with Kaposi sarcoma, and information on solid tumor occurrence in virus-infected patients in the whole patient population were included. Since the data were rendered anonymous, no informed consent was obtained from the patients for this retrospective analysis. Data were compiled using EXCEL® software, and the data presentation is descriptive only. The references search was guided by the nature of the data and discussion. RESULTS: In total, the clinical files of 594 patients(pts) were reviewed. Hematological malignancies were observed in 87 patients, and Kaposi sarcoma in 2 patients. In total, 70 patients had a viral infection, and 34 of these also had hematological malignancies. The hematological diagnoses were: Multiple myeloma in 27 pts, lymphoma(L) in 43 pts, myeloproliferative disorders in 17 pts and Kaposi sarcoma in two patients. Background: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) remains a major global public health problem. This complex metabolic disorder can lead to various complications, including cardiovascular diseases (leading cause of death) in T2D. Among the biochemical markers associated with increased risk for cardiovascular disease, homocysteine is currently one of the predictive markers under evaluation. We investigate the link between hyperhomocysteinemia and diabetes complications in DT2 population in Brazzaville. Methodology: We conducted a cross-sectional analytical study, from October to December 2022. One hundred and fifty participants were included, 100 patients T2D (34 with complications, 33 with comorbidities, 33 without), and 50 patients controls. Sociodemographic and clinical characteristics were collected. Homocysteine (Hcy) serum levels were measured using Sandwich ELISA method. Results: Study population was composed of 50% males and 50% females with sex ratio of 1;mean age was 52.2 ± 10.8 years (30 - 83). The prevalence of hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) was 36% (20% moderate Hcy, 15% intermediate and 1% severe). Mean Hcy concentration was 31.9 μmol/l (18 - 103). Age, gender and physical inactivity were strongly correlated to Hcy (OR of 3.5;9.4 and 3 respectively). Multivariate analysis showed that HHcy was a risk accelerator for degenerative complications (stroke: OR = 6.2;ischemic heart disease: 4.9;neuropathy: 9.2;retinopathy: 4.5 and peripheral arterial disease: 4.9). Conclusion: These findings suggest that hyperhomocysteinemia can be considered as a predictive marker to be taken into account in targeting cardiovascular risk in Congolese subjects with T2D.
