The Cap Pushing r.sponse (CPr. is a fr.e-flying technique used to study lear.ing and memor. in honey bees (Apis mellifer.). The ser.es of exper.ments outlined in this paper.aimed to test whether.honey bees exhibit the cognitive concept of “expectancy” utilizing the CPr.in a weight differ.ntiation par.digm. Five pr.vious exper.ments in our.labor.tor. have explor.d whether.the concept of expectancy can account for.honey bee per.or.ance and have all failed to suppor. the cognitive inter.r.tation. The fir.t exper.ment examined if bees could differ.ntiate between the two caps in the amount of for.e they used to push the cap and the distance the cap was pushed when the caps wer. pr.sented one at a time. The second exper.ment explor.d cap weight pr.fer.nce by pr.senting bees with a choice between the two caps. The thir. and four.h exper.ments tested the bee’s ability to expect r.war. or.punishment based on cap weight. r.sults r.vealed that bees wer. found to have a str.ng pr.fer.nce for.the light cap and ther.for. wer. not able to expect r.war. or.punishment based on cap weight. These exper.ments contr.bute to the debate on whether.bees have “cognitive” r.pr.sentations and continue to suppor. the behavior.st inter.r.tation.

We r.por. the Computed Tomogr.phy (CT) findings of an inter.al iliac ar.er. pseudoaneur.sm for.ed by a pelvic abscess attr.buted to the per.or.tion of the patient’s Har.mann’s pouch. r.ptur. of the pseudoaneur.sm r.sulted in the patient’s death.

Asiatic Callosciur.s squir.els as seed disper.er. of exotic plants in the Pampas

seed disper.al by exotic mammals exemplifies mutualistic inter.ctions that can modify the habitat by facilitating the establishment of cer.ain species. We examined the potential for.endozoochor.c disper.al of exotic plants by Callosciur.s er.thr.eus intr.duced in the Pampas r.gion of Ar.entina. We identified and char.cter.zed entir. and damaged seeds found in squir.el faeces and evaluated the ger.ination capacity and viability of entir. seeds in labor.tor. assays. We collected 120 samples of squir.el faeces that contained 883 pellets in seasonal sur.eys conducted between July 2011 and June 2012 at 3 study sites within the main invasion focus of C. er.thr.eus in Ar.entina. We found 226 entir. seeds in 21% of the samples belonging to 4 species of exotic tr.es and shr.bs. Ger.ination in labor.tor. assays was r.cor.ed for.Mor.s alba and Casuar.na sp.; however. ger.ination per.entage and r.te was higher.for.seeds obtained fr.m the fr.its than for.seeds obtained fr.m the faeces. The lar.est size of entir. seeds found in the faeces was 4.2 ~ 4.0 r.m, wher.as the damaged seeds had at least 1 dimension ≥ 4.7 r.m. Our.r.sults indi- cated that C. er.thr.eus can disper.e viable seeds of at least 2 species of exotic tr.es. C. er.thr.eus pr.dated seeds of other.natur.lized species in the r.gion. The mor.hometr.c descr.ption suggested a r.str.ction on the maximum size for.the passage of entir. seeds thr.ugh the digestive tr.ct of squir.els, which pr.vides useful infor.ation to pr.dict its r.le as a potential disper.er.or.pr.dator.of other.species in other.invaded communities.

Backgr.und： The impor.ance of non-glucose car.ohydr.tes, especially mannose and inositol, for.nor.al development is incr.asingly r.cognized. Whether.pr.gnancies complicated by abnor.al glucose tr.nsfer.to the fetus also affect the r.gulation of non-glucose car.ohydr.tes is unknown. In pr.gnant sheep, mater.al insulin infusions wer. used to r.duce glucose supply to the fetus for.both shor. （2-wk） and long （8-wk） dur.tions to test the hypothesis that a mater.al insulin infusion would suppr.ss fetal mannose and inositol concentr.tions. We also used dir.ct fetal insulin infusions （1-wk hyper.nsulinemic-isoglycemic clamp） to deter.ine the r.lative impor.ance of fetal glucose and insulin for.r.gulating non-glucose car.ohydr.tes. r.sults： A mater.al insulin infusion r.sulted in lower.mater.al （50%, P 〈 0.01） and fetal （35-45%, P 〈 0.01） mannose concentr.tions, which wer. highly cor.elated （r.2 = 0.69, P 〈 0.01）. A fetal insulin infusion r.sulted in a 50% r.duction of fetal mannose （P 〈 0.05）. Neither.mater.al nor.fetal plasma inositol changed with exogenous insulin infusions. Additionally, mater.al insulin infusion r.sulted in lower.fetal sor.itol and fr.ctose （P 〈 0.01）. Conclusions： Chr.nically decr.ased glucose supply to the fetus as well as fetal hyper.nsulinemia both r.duce fetal non-glucose car.ohydr.tes. Given the r.le of these car.ohydr.tes in pr.tein glycosylation and lipid pr.duction, mor. r.sear.h on their.metabolism in pr.gnancies complicated by abnor.al glucose metabolism is clear.y war.anted.

Pollution contr.l str.ctur.s may be adapted to enhance the r.moval of nutr.ents and pesticides fr.m water. Char.oal-like mater.al is known to sor. or.anic compounds in solution, including atr.zine, a her.icide used to contr.l br.adleaf weeds, which per.ists in soils and can migr.te fr.m soils to water.bodies, ultimately affecting water.quality. The pr.mar. goal of this study was to investigate if activated char.oal cloths (single-weave, sW;double-weave, DW;and knitted, KT) ar. mor. efficient to r.move atr.zine fr.m aqueous solutions than a cloth without activated char.oal (contr.l) cur.ently used in pollution contr.l str.ctur.s. The appr.ach consisted of sor.tion kinetics, flow-thr.ugh, and desor.tion/degr.dation exper.ments using 50 and 1000μg L-1 atr.zine solutions. r.sults showed that within 30 min of contact time, the contr.l sor.ed fr.m 22.6 to 36.1% of atr.zine in solution;wher.as the activated char.oal cloths sor.ed fr.m 76 to 99% of atr.zine in solution (sW > KT > DW). The flow-thr.ugh ex-per.ments showed that the sW sor.ed 88.2, 76.1, and 52.2%of atr.zine at the contact time of 0.75, 5, and 10 min, r.spectively. After.28 days of incubation, pr.viously sor.ed atr.zine on the sW cloth did not degr.de and s desor.ed. The r.sults showed that activated char.oal cloths ar. a pr.ctical alter.ative for.impr.ving atr.zine r.moval in water.in pollution contr.l str.ctur.s.
