Dogs are the most phenotypically diverse ma.m.lian species, and they possess more known heritable disorders than any other non-human ma.m.l. Efforts to catalog and characterize genetic variation across well-chosen populations of canines are necessary to advance our understanding of their evolutionary history and genetic architecture. To date, no organized effort has been undertaken to sequence the world's canid populations. The Dog10 K Consortium(http://***10 ***) is an international collaboration of researchers from across the globe who will generate 20× whole genomes from 10 000 canids in 5 *** effort will capture the genetic diversity that underlies the phenotypic and geographical variability of modern canids worldwide. Breeds, village dogs, niche populations and extended pedigrees are currently being sequenced, and de novo assemblies of multiple canids are being constructed. This unprecedented dataset will address the genetic underpinnings of domestication, breed formation, aging, behavior and morphological variation. more generally, this effort will advance our understanding of human and canine health.

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging to predict response of hepatocellular carcinoma to chemoembolization

a.m. To investigate whether intra-procedural diffusion- weighted magnetic resonance imaging can predict response of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) during trans- catheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE). mETHODS: Sixteen patients (15 male), aged 59 ±11 years (range: 42-81 years) underwent a total of 21 separate trea.m.nts for unresectable HCC in a hybrid magnetic resonance/interventional radiology suite. Ana- tomical imaging and diffusion-weighted imaging (b = 0, 500 s/mm2) were performed on a 1.5-T unit. Tumor enhancement and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC, mm2/s) values were assessed immediately before and at 1 and 3 mo after TACE. We calculated the percent change (PC) in ADC values at all time points. We compared follow-up ADC values to baseline values using a paired t test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: The intra-procedural sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values (%) for detecting a complete or partial 1-mo tumor response using ADC PC thresholds of ±5%, ±10%, and ±15% were 77, 67, 91, and 40; 54, 67, 88, and 25; and 46, 100, 100, and 30, respectively. There was no clear predictive value for the 3-mo follow-up. Compared to baseline, the immediate post-procedure and 1-mo mean ADC values both increased; the latter obtaining statistical significance (1.48 ± 0.29 mm2/s vs 1.65 ± 0.35 × 10-3 mm2/s, P 15% predicted 1-mo anatomical HCC response with the greatest accuracy, and can provide valuable feedback at the time of TACE.

Velocity field of China continent constrained by Global Positioning System (GPS) reveals both continuous and block-like styles of deformation. Continuous deformation commonly characterizes actively deforming mountain ranges such as the Tianshan mountain, Qilian mountain, and Tibet. The block-like movement often represents deformation in the tectonically stable regions such as Ordos, South China and Tarim blocks. GPS measurements indicate 5.1±2.5 mm/a left-lateral strike-slip rate along the Altun fault. Eastward convergence along the Longmenshan fault is less than 6.7±3.0 mm/a. South China.m.ves 11-14 mm/a eastward compared with the stable Eurasia. These low slip rates do not imply rapid eastward extrusion of China continent predicted by the model of 'continental extrusion'. It appears that 'crustal thickening' model more properly describes both continuous and block-like styles of deformation in China continent.

Prospective evaluation of health status, quality of life and clinical outcomes following implantable defibrillator generator exchange

BACKGROUND Little is known about health status and quality of life(QoL)after implantable cardioverter-defibrillator(ICD)generator exchange(GE).mETHODS We prospectively followed patients undergoing first-time ICD *** assessments of health status were performed by a.m.nistering the 36-Item Short Form Survey(SF-36).RESULTS mean age was 67.5±14.3 years,left ventricle ejection fraction(LVEF)was 36.5%±15.0%and over 40%of the cohort had improved LVEF to>35%at the time of ***-36 scores were significantly worse in physical/general health domains compared to domains of emotional/social well-being(Pmparison).Physical health scores were significantly worse among those with medical comorbidities including diabetes,chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and atrial *** follow-up was 1.6±0.5 years after *** SF-36 scores remained stable across all domains during *** at 3 years post-GE was estimated at 80%.Five patients died during follow-up and most deaths were adjudicated as non-arrhythmic in *** patients experienced appropriate ICD shocks after GE,three of whom had LVEF which remains impaired LVEF(i.e.,me of *** Patients undergoing ICD GE have significantly worse physical health compared to emotional/social well-being,which is associated with the presence of medical *** terms of clinical outcomes,the incidence of appropriate shocks after GE among those with improvement in LVEF is very low,and most deaths post-procedure appear to be non-arrhythmic in *** data represent an attempt to more fully characterize the spectrum of QoL and clinical outcomes after GE.

The concept of quasi-particles forms the theoretical basis of our microscopic understanding of emergent phenomena associated with quantum-mechanical many-body ***,the quasi-particle theory in disordered materials has proven difficult,resulting in the predominance of mean-field ***,we report first-principles phonon calculations and inelastic X-ray and neutron-scattering measurements on equiatomic alloys(NiCo,NiFe,AgPd,and NiFeCo)with force-constant dominant disorder—confronting a key 50-year-old assumption in the Hamiltonian of all mean-field quasi-particle solutions for off-diagonal *** results have revealed the presence of a large,and heretofore unrecognized,impact of local chemical environments on the distribution of the species-pair-resolved force-constant disorder that can dominate phonon *** discovery not only identifies a critical analysis issue that has broad implications for other elementary excitations,such as magnons and skyrmions in magnetic alloys,but also provides an important tool for the design of materials with ultralow thermal conductivities.

Dear Editor The regulation of nectar production is dependent on hormonal signaling. For example, Arabidopsis PIN6, which encodes an auxin efflux transporter family protein, was identified as a nectary-enriched gene whose expression level was positively correlated to total nectar production （Bender et al., 2013）. Key Issues for Water Quality monitoring in the Zambezi River Basin in mozambique in the Context of mining Development

Zambezi River Basin is located in Southern Africa. It is essential for the economy of its eight riparian countries. The delta and a.m.st 11% of its total catchment area are located in mozambique. The main stream of the river receives a run-off contribution of 1800 m3/s in mozambique and reaches the ocean with a flow of about 4100 m3/s. Coal mining is developing fast in the Zambezi River Basin in mozambique due to favourable geological conditions. The coal mining and other activities have an impact on the surface and groundwater quality of the river basin. ARA-Zambeze is the river basin organization responsible for the water quality monitoring in Zambezi River Basin in mozambique. In spite of limited resources ARA-Zambeze performs surveillance monitoring, while the institutions influencing the water quality of the river are doing operational monitoring. In this paper a.m.nitoring system for the Zambezi River Basin in mozambique is proposed. The system includes two alternative monitoring procedures. One procedure considers improvement of the current situation, which is characterized by multiple actors doing monitoring in isolation, by standardizing the analytical methods and improving data sharing through a web-based reporting system. The other proposed monitoring procedure considers a centralized approach, by having a consulting company doing the monitoring for the whole river basin in mozambique. The second option has the advantages of improving consistency and comparability of the data, thereby allowing for more accurate trend analyses. It is concluded that the best way forward is to implement the first procedure and slowly move to the second.
