Biodegradable polymers have been increasingly used for scientific and commercial applications because they are similar to some conventional thermoplastics and exhibit the ability of ***(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate)(PHBV)nanocomposites films with 1 and 2 wt% of carbon nanotubes(cNT)were prepared by solution mixing,followed by solvent *** this work,PHBV/cNT nanocomposites were submitted to biodegradation in an aqueous medium for 34 days through a respirometric ***,the PHBV films were analyzed by the cO2 production and mineralization as a response of a microbial attack,which was monitored by back titration during all the *** films were also characterized by measuring the weight loss;crystallinity was evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry(DSc)and the surface morphology by scanning electron microscopy(SEM).By analyzing the weight loss of the films,it was observed that adding cNT increases the resistance to biodegradation *** obtained values of cO2 production and mineralization of the samples,as well as the values of weight loss,showed that the biodegradation of PHBV/cNT nanocomposites was minor in comparison to neat *** addition of cNT in PHBV matrix influences the surface morphology,causing the presence of cavities and an increase of roughness.

Necrophagous blowflies(Diptera:calliphoridae)such as calliphora vicina,a cold-tolerant species,and L ucilia serie ata,a warm-adapted species,are pioneer carrion・*** these two species have different temperature preferences,larvae aggregate actively and often feed simultaneously on *** hypothesis to be tested was that *** benefits from the association with *** at lower temperatures(i.e.,15℃)and that *** derives greater benefits from this association at higher temperatures(i.e.,28℃).Therefore,both species were raised at these two constant temperatures from first instars to adults under three different conditions:monospecific low-density,monospecific high-density,and heterospecific *** time until larval migration,surface area of puparia,and survival rates were determined for each *** between these fitness-related traits were found between species,temperatures,group densities,and species *** 28°c,*** larvae bred in heterospecific groups migrated significantly earlier and in higher numbers than that under same density conspecific con・ditions,with a lower mortality *** 15°c,both species benefited from high-density heterospecific associations,expressed by faster development and larger *** conclusion,necrophagous larvae benefited from heterospecific aggregations at suboptima 1 temperatures by adapting their migration time to that of the faster *** temperature changes throughout the day and over the year,the beneficiary of such a collective association also *** costs involved and deviations to the temperature-size rule highlight the complexity of the carrion ecosystem.

Bite force is often associated with speciﬁc morphological features,such as sagittal *** presence of a pro-nounced sagittal crest in some tapirs(Perissodactyla:Tapiridae)was recently shown to be negatively correlated with hard-object feeding,in contrast with similar cranial structures in *** aim of this study was to investi-gate bite forces and sagittal crest heights across a wide range of modern and extinct tapirs and apply a comparative investigation to establish whether these features are correlated across a broad phylogenetic *** examined a sample of 71 specimens representing 15 tapir species(5 extant,10 extinct)using the dry-skull method,linear measurements of cranial features,phylogenetic reconstruction,and comparative *** were found to ex-hibit variation in bite force and sagittal crest height across their phylogeny and between different biogeographical realms,with high-crested morphologies occurring mostly in Neotropical *** highest bite forces within tapirs appear to be driven by estimates for the masseter–pterygoid muscle complex,rather than predicted forces for the temporalis *** results demonstrate that relative sagittal crest height is poorly correlated with relative cranial bite force,suggesting high force application is not a driver for pronounced sagittal crests in this *** divergent biomechanical capabilities of different contemporaneous tapirids may have allowed multiple species to occupy overlapping territories and partition resources to avoid excess *** forces in tapirs peak in Pleistocene species,independent of body size,suggesting possible dietary shifts as a potential result of climatic changes during this epoch.

Objective:There are few reports on how students self-assess their performance on a family medicine *** studied what students perceived as their strengths and areas of needed improvement at the mid-point in our family medicine ***:We introduced a form for family medicine clerkship students to self-assess their strengths and areas of needed improvements using the clerkship objectives as a *** cal-culated the frequency in which each clerkship objective was reported as a strength or an area of needed *** students’open-ended comments,two reviewers independently organ-ized students’comments into themes,then negotiated any initial differences into a set of themes that incorporated both the reviewers’*** performed c2 tests to determine any significant differences in the frequency of responses between male and female ***:During the study period(July 2012 to June 2014),372 students submitted com-pleted self-assessment *** most frequently reported strengths were professional objectives(48.9%)and interpersonal communication objectives(43.0%)The most frequently reported areas of needed improvement were the ability to explain key characteristics of commonly used medica-tions(29.3%)and the ability to develop a management plan(28.5%).There were no significant differences in the frequency of responses between male and female ***:We now have a better understanding of students’perceived strengths and areas of needed improvement in our family medicine *** have shared this information with our community faculty preceptors so that they will be better prepared to work with our *** medicine clerkship preceptors at other institutions may also find these results useful.

The study of δ13ccpDB （Pee Dee Belemnite） and nitrogen contents in 1 to 5-pm-diameter microdinmonds included in garnets from the qnartz-feldspathic gneisses （Erzgehirge, Germany） was performed in situ with the Nano-scale Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer. The results revealed that there were two stages of diamond crystallization from a c-O-H supeeritical fluid rich in biogenic carbon and diverse minor elements of crustal origin. The δ13ccpDB Of the Erzgebirge diamond of the first stage falls in the range -17‰ to 19‰, with an average value of -17.8‰; the average content of nitrogen is 820 ppm. Diamonds of the second stage are characterized by δ13cPDB=-21.5‰ to -25.5‰, with an average value of -23.24‰; the average nitrogen content is non-homogeneously scattered from 740 ppm to 3 370 ppm among 6 diamonds situated in garnets within the same polished rock slide. Both diamond of the first stage and diamond of the second stage carbon reservoirs belong to biogenic matter, therefore confirming deep subduction of the continental crust sediments and their subsequent exhumation during the Variscan orogeny.

The herbicide diuron is widely used in agricultural areas in Brazil, whereas it has high potential for subsurface water contamination due to its physicochemical characteristics. Recent studies have demonstrated the potential of biochar as a sorbent and possible pesticide leaching mitigation. The objective of this study was to investigate the long-term effect of biochar application on the kinetics of sorption and desorption of diuron in a cerrado Haplic Plinthosol. Samples were collected in an experiment conducted in the field in a randomized block design consisting of the combination of two levels of fertilizer application (0 and 300 kg ha −1 of 5-25-15 formula of NPK fertilizers) and three doses of biochar (0, 16, and 32 Mg ha −1 ). The Freundlich isotherm accurately described the sorption of diuron in all treatments. Biochar application increased the sorption and reduced the desorption of diuron. This effect was attributed to the contribution of biochar to total organic carbon (c) and c in the humin fraction and to the increase in the reactivity of the humic acid and humin fractions, which was significantly highly correlated with the sorption coefficient ( K f ). A positive correlation between the partition coefficient of organic c and K f confirmed the importance of the soil organic compartment for the sorption of diuron. The higher diuron sorption and lower diuron desorption capacities of sandy soils after biochar application could reduce the potential risk of diuron leaching and contamination of subsurface water.

Predicting utility of a model for end stage liver disease in alcoholic liver disease

AIM： To validate the statistic utility of both the Maddrey Discriminant Function score and the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease as predictors of short term （30 d and 90 d） mortality in patients with alcoholic hepatitis and to assess prognostic factors among clinical characteristics and laboratory variables of patients with alcoholic hepatitis. METHODS： Thirty-four patients with the diagnosis of alcoholic hepatitis admitted to Hippokration University Hospital of Athens from 2000 to 2005 were assessed in the current retrospective study and a statistical analysis was conducted. RESULTS： 30- and 90-d mortality rates were reported at 5.9% （2/34） and 14.7% （5/34）, respectively. Significant correlation was demonstrated for the Model for End- Stage Liver Disease （P30 = 0.094, P90 = 0.046） and the Maddrey Discriminant Function score （P30 = 0.033, P90 = 0.038） with 30- and 90-d mortality whereas a significant association was also established for alanine aminotrans- ferase （P = 0.057）, fibrin degradation products （P = 0.048） and c-reactive protein （P = 0.067） with 90-d mortality. For 30-d mortality the Area Under the curve was 0.969 （95%cI： 0.902-1.036, P = 0.028） for the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score and 0.984 （95%cI： 0.942-1.027, P = 0.023） for the Maddrey Discriminant Function score with the optimal cut off point of 30.5 （sensitivity 1, specificity 0.937） and 108.68 （sensitivity 1, specificity 0.969）, respectively. Accordingly, for 90-d mortality the Area Under the curve was 0.762 （95%cI： 0.559-0.965, P = 0.065） for the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score and 0.752 （95%cI： 0.465-1.038, P = 0.076） for the Maddrey Discriminant Function score with the optimal cut off point of 19 （sensitivity 0.6, specificity 0.6） and 92 （sensitivity 0.6, specificity 0.946）, respectively. To find correlates to spontaneous clearance of hepatitis c virus （HcV） infection, this study compared individuals with self-limited and chronic infection with regard to clinical, demographic, and serological pa- rameters. METHODS： Sixty-seven anti-HcV positive and repeatedly HcV RNA negative individuals were considered to have resolved HcV infection spontaneously. To determine the viral genotype these patients had been infected with HcV serotyping was performed. For comparison reasons, 62 consecutive patients with chronic hepatitis c were enrolled. cases and controls were compared stratified for age and sex. RESULTS： Retrospective analysis showed （1） a lower humoral reactivity to HcV in patients with self-limited compared to chronic HcV-infection and （2） that younger age, history of iv drug use, and acute/post-acute hepatitis A or B co-infections, but not viral genotypes, are independent correlates for spontaneous HcV clearance. cONcLUSION： The stronger humoral reactivity to HcV in patients with persistent infections and in those with a history of iv drug use is supposed to be due to continuous or repeated contact（s） to the antigen. Metachronous hepatitis A or hepatitis B infections might favor HcV clearance.
