Qualitative Determination of Photodegradation Products of Progesterone and Testosterone in Aqueous Solution

Direct photochemical degradations of progesterone (PR) and testosterone (TR), two naturally produced hormones, have been conducted in non-buffered aqueous solution (pH ranging between 5.5 and 6.0). The irradiation experiments were carried out in a batch reactor upon monochromatic (254 nm) and polychromatic (λ > 290 nm) at 25°C. GLC/mS and LC/UV-DAD/mS analyses were performed to investigate phototransformation products after a solid phase extraction (SPE) step for analytes concentration. For each compound several by-products have been identified and are the same ones under both irradiation conditions. Because of the presence of the same chromophore (α, β-unsaturated group) absorbing UV radiations in both hormones, the majority of chromatographic peaks correspond to by-products formed according to identical mechanisms involving isomerization, enolization, oxidation and hydration to lead to the generation of lumiketone, cyclopentenone, spiro-hydration, oxidation and hydroxylation photoproducts.

The determination and monitoring of aquifer formations on the eastern border of moroccan Gharb basin are very difficult because of their spatial and temporal variation. To delimit these formations, a geophysical survey of 52 geoelectric soundings was performed with a mesh of 500 m and electrodes distance between 1000 m and 3000 m. Geoelectric sections and resistivity maps show a horst and graben structure. The correlation of existing oil drillings shows that the Jurassic and neogene formations are both affected by normal faults causing Jurassic deposits collapse with local thickening of the miocene deposits, and reverse faults delimiting tectonic slices due to tension caused by prerifaine nappe advance. This fact confirms the generated structure by the resistivity method. The isobath map of resistant formations's roof show average depths extending from 400 to 800 m for calcareous sandstone that are potential aquifers while oil drillings indicate over 1000 m depths.

Evaluation of Glomerular Hyperfiltration and Albuminuria in Sickle Cell Disease Adolescents: Cross-Sectional Retrospective Study

Background: Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) renal abnormalities commence early in childhood. The glomerular abnormalities, glomerular hyperfiltration and albuminuria are the most prevalent. However, these SCD glomerulopathies have not been considered exclusively in the adolescent age group. Objective: To determine the prevalence of glomerular hyperfiltration and albuminuria as well as identify the determinants for glomerular hyperfiltration in adolescents with SCD. Patients and methods: The electronic patient records of 153 adolescents with SCD aged 10 - matology Clinic at Evelina London Children’s Hospital, United Kingdom, were reviewed from the 10th to 23rd June 2019. Clinical information and laboratory parameters were obtained. The glomerular filtration rate was derived using the Bedside Schwartz’s method. Grouping of the adolescents was based on the presence and absence of glomerular hyperfiltration, which was defined as glomerular filtration rate > 140 ml/min/m2. The presence of albuminuria was defined as urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio > 3 mg/mmol or protein-to-creatinine ratio of >15 mg/mmol. The clinical and laboratory determinants of glomerular hyperfiltration in the total study population were investigated. Result: Prevalence of glomerular hyperfiltration was 33.3% in the adolescents studied, and that of albuminuria was 15.7% amongst the SCD adolescents studied, of which 13.7% of those with glomerular hyperfiltration also had albuminuria. On univariable analysis, the SCD adolescents with glomerular hyperfiltration had significantly lower weight (48.0 ± 18.0 versus 54.8 ± 17.0 kg;p = 0.02), height (155.1 ± 13.1 versus 160.6 ± 13.1 cm;p = 0.01), body mass index (19.4 ± 5.0 versus 21.0 ± 4.3;p = 0.04), haemoglobin level (88.7 ± 13.3 versus 98.1 ± 21.7 g/L;p = 0.001), and serum creatinine level (0.4 ± 0.1 versus 0.6 ± 0.2 mg/dl;p = 0.0001) as compared to tho

Successful treatment of conversion chemotherapy for initially unresectable synchronous colorectal liver metastasis

Proton resonant states in 22mg have been investigated by the resonant elastic scattering of 21Na+p. The 21Na beam with a mean energy of 4.00 meV/u was separated by the CNS radioactive ion beam separator(CRIB) and bombarded a thick(CH2)n target. The energy spectra of recoiled protons were measured at scattering angles of θcm ≈172° and 146°,respectively. A new state at 7.06 meV has been observed clearly and another new one at 7.28 meV is tentatively identified due to its low statistics. The proton resonant parameters were deduced from an R-matrix analysis of the differential cross section data. The astrophysical resonant reaction rate for the 18ne(α,p)21Na reaction has been estimated,and it is about five times larger than that assumed before.

Reassessment of the Resources of a Deep Aquifer System under Physical and Chemical Constraints:The maastrichtian Aquifer

The deep and confined maastrichtian aquifer contains considerable groundwater resources. It stretches over nearly 200,000 km2, from the northern part of mauritania to the South of Guinea Bissau where it becomes shallow. The reservoir is composed mainly of coarse sands and sandstone interbedded with some clay units. The aquifer provides 40% of the total drinking water extracted from the different aquifers and nearly 800 wells equally distributed operate only in the top 50 m of the aquifer. Despite the importance of these resources for providing water in the rural and urban areas, the aquifer characteristics are not well defined. The present paper aims to define first the physical and chemical characteristics of the maastrichtian aquifer. The reserve of the aquifer initially estimated at 350 billion m3, is reassessed using new data providing from cross sections realized as part of our research, through the Water Sectorial Project of the ministry of Hydraulics. Data from oil wells and geophysical logging are used to investigate the geometry of the aquifer and the position of the fresh/salty water interface. The highest thickness of the aquifer is between 200 to 400 m and salty water is present below the fresh groundwater in the west side of the aquifer. In the Eastern side, potable water lies directly above the basement. The thickness of the aquifer increases from the west to the center, and then decreases towards the shallow basement rock in the South East. The average thickness is 250 m. Chemical data coming from pumping wells indicate high chloride (250 - 1600 mg/l) and fluoride content (1 - 5.5 mg/l). Therefore, the reassessment has to take into account the chemical aspect of the water.

Groundwater is the main resource for human consumption in many countries, especially in developing countries. This groundwater is often brackish and hyperfluorinated, which leads to diseases such as dental and bone fluorosis, etc. The water from the Diouroup water drainage facilities, like those from many other water drainage facilities in the regions of Fatick, Kaolack, Diourbel and the area of Touba, is facing this problem. To solve these problems, several physicochemical and membrane methods have been implemented. In this work we have briefly outlined some of these methods and we have chosen one of them, low pressure reverse osmosis. In addition, this technique is very simple to operate and maintain. Reverse osmosis provides good quality water in a single step, without the need for additional sterilization or remineralization treatments. We then carried out simulations with the Reverse Osmosis System Analysis (ROSA) software. For reasonable operating parameters, we have noticed a low feed pressure of 11.58 bars, a good average flow of raw water of 27.79 L/m2/h and a recovery rate of the first pass of 75.01%. The results obtained also showed a good quality of the permeate which respects the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) on drinking water. The fluorides of 0.59 mg/L have a recovery rate of 90.8% while the chlorides of 59.09 mg/L have a recovery rate of 92.12% as for the Total Dissolved Solids of 184.90 mg/L for an abatement of 92%. Finally, the low energy consumption of the process makes it possible to consider it in coupling with an electric supply by photovoltaic solar collectors for isolated sites.
