Complement-dependent neuroinflammation in spinal cord injury:from pathology to therapeutic implications

Spinal cord injury remains a major cause of disability in young adults,and beyond acute decompression and rehabilitation,there are no pharmacological treatments to limit the progression of injury and optimize recovery in this *** the thorough investigation of the complement system in triggering and propagating cerebral neuroinflammation,a similar role for complement in spinal neuroinflammation is a focus of ongoing *** this work,we survey the current literature investigating the role of complement in spinal cord injury including the sources of complement proteins,triggers of complement activation,and role of effector functions in the *** study relevant data demonstrating the different triggers of complement activation after spinal cord injury including direct binding to cellular debris,and or activation via antibody binding to damage-associated molecular *** effector functions of complement have been implicated in spinal cord injury,and we critically evaluate recent studies on the dual role of complement anaphylatoxins in spinal cord injury while emphasizing the lack of pathophysiological understanding of the role of opsonins in spinal cord *** this pathophysiological review,we systematically review the different translational approaches used in preclinical models of spinal cord injury and discuss the challenges for future translation into human *** review emphasizes the need for future studies to dissect the roles of different complement pathways in the pathology of spinal cord injury,to evaluate the phases of involvement of opsonins and anaphylatoxins,and to study the role of complement in white matter degeneration and regeneration using translational strategies to supplement genetic models.

THE m/PH/1 QUEUE WITH WORKING VACATIONS AND VACATION INTERRUPTION

We study an m/PH/1 queue with phase type working vacation and vacation interruption where the vacation time follows a phase type distribution. The server serves the customers at a lower rate in a vacation period. The server comes back to the regular busy period at a service completion without completing the vacation. Such policy is called vacation interruption. In terms of quasi birth and death process and matrix-geometric solution method, we obtain the stationary queue length distribution. moreover we obtain the conditional stochastic decomposition structures of queue length and waiting time when the service time distribution in the regular busy period is exponential.

Comparative analysis of the dissolution kinetics of galena in binary solutions of HCl/FeCl_3 and HCl/H_2O_2

A comparative study of the dissolution kinetics of galena ore in binary solutions of FeCl3/HCl and H2O2/HCl has been *** dissolution kinetics of the galena was found to depend on leachant concentration,reaction temperature,stirring speed,solid-to-liquid ratio,and particle *** dissolution rate of galena ore increases with the increase of leachant concentration,reaction temperature,and stirring speed,while it decreases with the increase of solid-to-liquid ratio and particle *** activation energy （Ea） of 26.5 kJ/mol was obtained for galena ore dissolution in 0.3 m FeCl3 /8.06 m HCl,and it suggests the surface diffusion model for the leaching reaction,while the Ea value of 40.6 kJ/mol was obtained for its dissolution in 8.06 m H2O2 /8.06 m HCl,which suggests the surface chemical reaction model for the leaching ***,the linear relationship between rate constants and the reciprocal of particle radius supports the fact that dissolution is controlled by the surface reaction in the two ***,the rate of reaction based on the reaction-controlled process has been described by a semiempirical mathematical *** Arrhenius and reaction constants of 11.023 s^-1,1.25×10^-4 and 3.65×10^2 s^-1,8.02×10^ 6 were calculated for the 0.3 m FeCl3/8.06 m HCl and 8.06 m H2O2/8.06 m HCl binary solutions,respectively.

Water Quality from the Purification Unit of Thiakhar (Diourbel, Senegal) and Impact of Discharges from Treatment on Water Resources

The installation of a purification unit since 2008 in the village of Thiakhar has improved the physico-chemical and bacteriological quality of the water supply. However about 55% of the raw water comes out of the unit as discharges (approximately 14 m3 per day) highly concentrated in fluoride and chloride ions. Based on historical samples, we find that the volumes of water consumed together with the volumes of water discharged are increasingly significant from year to year. The storage of waste water is carried out in a septic tank connected to a leaking cesspool sink. Significant excesses of these discharges are visible on the site and a flow of concentrate is observed creating a puddle of water that attracts birds and straying cattle. The study describes the following substantial impacts on the natural and human environment: 1) contamination of groundwater, 2) soil salinization 3), impact on flora and fauna, 4) impact on health. The study concludes by identifying measures to mitigate the negative impacts related to the discharges and by proposing alternative solution.

Kenaf cellulose-based poly(amidoxime) ligand for adsorption of rare earth ions

A well-known adsorbent, poly(amidoxime)ligand, was prepared from polyacrylonitrile(PAN) grafted kenaf cellulose, and subsequent characterization was performed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),field emission scanning electron microscope(FESEm) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICP-mS).The adsorption capacities of the prepared ligand for rare earth metals are found to be excellent, with adsorptions of La^(3+), Ce^(3+), Pr^(3+), Gd^(3+) and Nd^(3+) experimentally determined to be 262, 255, 244, 241 and 233 mg·g^(-1), respectively, at pH 6. The experimental values of the adsorption of rare earth metals are well matched with the pseudosecond-order rate equation. The reusability of the adsorbent is examined for seven cycles of sorption/desorption,demonstrating that the proposed adsorbent could be reused for over seven cycles without any significant loss in the original removal capability of the ligand.

Selective extraction of In(Ⅲ),Ga(Ⅲ) and Zn(Ⅱ) using a novel extractant with phenylphosphinic acid

A new extractant, [N,N-di（2-ethylhexyl）aminolmethylphenylphosphinic acid （DEAPP）, was synthesized to de- velop the mutual separation techniques of In（Ⅲ）, Ga（Ⅲ） and Zn（Ⅱ）. The extraction selectivity for In（Ⅲ）, Ga（Ⅲ） and Zn（Ⅱ） with DEAPP was higher than that of the commercial phosphorus acid extractants such as D2EHPA and PC-88A. The extraction selectivity for metal ions in 1 mob L 1 aqueous ammonium nitrate solution with DEAPP was in the following order： In（Ⅲ）〉 Ga（Ⅲ）〉 Zn（Ⅱ）. These selective extraction behaviors indicate that the amino moiety of DEAPP plays an important role in the mutual separation of ln（Ⅲ）, Ga（Ⅲ） and Zn（ll）. The extraction equilibria of In（Ⅲ）, Ga（Ⅲ） and Zn（Ⅱ） with DEAPP （ = HR） were expressed by the following reactions： In3＋＋ 2（HR）2 InR3（HR）＋ 3H＋, Ga3＋＋ 1.5（HR）2 ＋ N- = GaR2（HR）（NO3）＋ 2H＋, and Zn2＋ 4- 2（HR）2 ZnR2 （HR） 2 determined 4- 2H＋. The extraction equilibrium constants of In（Ⅲ）, Ga（Ⅲ） and Zn（Ⅱ） with DEAPP were to be Kex, m = 1.7 × 104 [*** 1], 4.17 [（***-1）s], and 1.55 × 10 2 [-], respectively.

Ion Beam Surface modification of Y-TZP and Effects of Subsequent Annealing

Tetragonal zirconia polycrystals containing 3 mol% yttria (3Y-TZP), which show Superplasticity at high temperatures, were irradiated using 130 meV Zr+" ions in the TANDEm accelerator facility at Tokai Research Establishment, JAERI. The irradiation induced atomic displacement damage was analyzed by TRIm code. Changes in the mechanical properties and fracture behavior caused by the ion irradiation and the effects of subsequent annealing were studied. The distribution of micro-indentation depth as a function of the indentation position from the irradiated surface to the specimen interior was also examined. The occurrence of compressive residual stresses and increases in hardness and fracture toughness were found in the as-irradiated surface region of the specimen. The subsequent annealing revealed that these quantities were decreased gradually with raising the annealing temperature. Probable causes of the generation of the residual stress and the changes in mechanical properties and fracture mode due to the irradiation are discussed.

A combined tectono-climatic control on Holocene sedimentation in Ladakh Himalaya,India:Clues from Anisotropy of magnetic Susceptibility(AmS)of lake sediments

Anisotropy of magnetic Susceptibility(AmS)data from a~27.8 m thick soft sedimentary mud sequence(~10.5-3.25 k yrs)from the Spituk Palaeolake Sequence(SPSS)of Holocene age,located in the northern bank of the Indus River in the Leh-Ladakh Himalaya,show effects of tectonic versus climate dynamics responsible for the Himalayan *** sedimentary sequence,consisting of alternating of aeolian sand and glacio-fluvial mud flow deposits,has been subdivided into an older Last Glacier Phase I(LGP 1)and a younger Last Glacier Phase II(LGP 2),where the termination of each phase is marked by the occurrence of gravel beds of thickness≤1 m,which were deposited due to glacial *** present AmS data along with previously published information on sedimentology confirm that the mudflow deposits of the LGP 1 and LGP 2phases were deposited in a lacustrine environment under glacio-fluvial ***,a weak fluvial flow towards NW and ne could have existed for the LGP 1 and LGP 2,*** glacial beds terminating LGP 1 and LGP 2 appear to have formed by climatic warming and tectonic activity,***,the Holocene Himalayan sedimentation was influenced by both climatic and tectonic ***,the thickness of the gravel bed(~0.8 m)terminating LGP 2 occupies only~2.8 vol%of the total studied thickness~28 m,of the SPSS in the present study,which indicated a lesser control of tectonism in the growth of the Himalaya in and around the study area.

Tolerance analysis of non-depolarizing double-pass polarimetry

Double-pass polarimetry measures the polarization properties of a sample over a rangeof polar angles and all azimuths. Here, we present a tolerance analysis of all the opticalelements in both the calibration and measurement procedures to predict thesensitivities of the double-pass polarimeter. The calibration procedure is described by amueller matrix based on the eigenvalue calibration method (ECm) [1]. Our numericalresults from the calibration and measurement in the mueller matrix description withtolerances limited by systematic and stochastic noise from specifications ofcommercially available hardware components are in good agreement with previousexperimental observations. Furthermore, by using the orientation Zernike polynomials(OZP) which are an extension of the Jones matrix formalism, similar to the Zernikepolynomials wavefront expansion, the pupil distribution of the polarization propertiesof non-depolarizing samples under test are expanded. Using polar angles ranging upto 25°, we predict a sensitivity of 0.5% for diattenuation and 0.3° for retardance usingthe root mean square (RmS) of the corresponding OZP coefficients as a measure of theerror. This numerical tool provides an approach for further improving the sensitivities ofpolarimeters via error budgeting and replacing sensitive components with thosehaving better precision.
