Baicalin Ameliorates Corticosterone-Induced Depression by Promoting Neurodevelopment of Hippocampal via mTOR/GSK3β Pathway

Objective: To investigate the role of hippocampal neurodevelopment in the antidepressant effect of baicalin. Methods: Forty male Institute of Cancer Research mice were divided into control, corticosterone(CORT,40 mg/kg), CORT+baicalin-L(25 mg/kg), CORT+baicalin-H(50 mg/kg), and CORT+fluoxetine(10 mg/kg)groups according to a random number table. An animal model of depression was established by chronic CORT exposure. Behavioral tests were used to assess the reliability of depression model and the antidepressant effect of baicalin. In addition, Nissl staining and immunofluorescence were used to evaluate the effect of baicalin on hippocampal neurodevelopment in mice. The protein and mRNA expression levels of neurodevelopment-related factors were detected by Western blot analysis and real-time polymerase chain reaction, respectively. Results:Baicalin significantly ameliorated the depressive-like behavior of mice resulting from CORT exposure and promoted the development of dentate gyrus in hippocampus, thereby reversing the depressive-like pathological changes in hippocampal neurons caused by CORT neurotoxicity. Moreover, baicalin significantly decreased the protein and mRNA expression levels of glycogen synthase kinase 3β(GSK3β), and upregulated the expression levels of cell cycle protein D1, p-mammalian target of rapamycin(mTOR), doublecortin, and brainderived neurotrophic factor(all Pluoxetine groups(P>0.05). Conclusion: Baicalin can promote the development of hippocampal neurons via mTOR/GSK3β signaling pathway, thus protect mice against CORT-induced neurotoxicity and play an antidepressant role.

Interfacial heat transfer behavior between the molten steel and twin-rolls is a key issue in the strip casting process,and it has already attracted wide attention from industrial and academic communities of steel.The research methods and influencing factors on the interfacial heat transfer were summarized.Numerical simulation models,semi-industrial scale,and laboratory equipment have been developed in this field,and these methods were also improved by worldwide researchers based on the development of computer,automatic,and visual technologies.Coating properties,naturally deposited film,and casting parameters are the main factors which affect the heat transfer significantly.Although lots of research has been carried out,the internal relations among these influencing factors,interfacial heat transfer,and the quality of the strip are still worth to be further explored.Keywords Strip casting Interfacial heat transfer Simulation method Coating property Naturally deposited film Casting parameter.

The Emergence, Epidemiology, and Etiology of Haff Disease

Haff disease is a type of human rhabdomyolysis characterized by the sudden onset of unexplained muscular rigidity and an elevated serum creatine kinase level within 24 h after consuming cooked aquatic products. Here, we reviewed a previous study on Haff disease and summarized the clinical manifestations,epidemiological characteristics, and etiological data to confirm the incidence and global epidemiology of the disease and identify the most common seafood vectors. Future directions for Haff disease study will include further prospective etiological studies and the development of prevention and control strategies.

Target prediction and activity verification for the antidepressant action of Huangqin(Radix Scutellariae Baicalensis)

OBJECTIVE:To decipher the antidepressant targets and mechanisms of Huangqin(Radix Scutellariae Baicalensis)(RSB)by a novel computational system based on prediction and experimental verification.METHODS:The putative targets of RSB against depression were identified from Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology(TCMSP)and Drug Bank.Next,protein-protein interaction network of the anti-depression targets of RSB were identified,and differentially expressed genes(DEGs)of depression were mined from the NCBI database.Then,Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes and Gene Ontology were used to analysis the common targets.Finally,the selected pathways and functions were verified by experimentation.RESULTS:Thirty active compounds in RSB were predicted with high confidence by TCMSP and DrugBank,and seventy-one DEGs were identified in the GEO database.Besides,eight core target proteins were screened out by descending order of degree value,including ACHE,IL6,SLC6A4,FOS,SLC6A3,MAOB,DPP4,and JUN.These target genes were further found to be associated with pathways involved in neuronal apoptosis,such as pathways in cancer,Toll-like receptor signaling pathway,and TNF signaling.The cell proliferation assay and wound-healing assay results showed that RSB does not affect PC12 cell proliferation and chemotaxis.Unexpectedly,RSB protected PC12 cells from oxidative stress induced by H2O2 via inhibiting autophagy and apoptosis.We revealed significant changes in mice treated with 400 mg/kg RSB compared with the lipopolysaccharide mice.The possible mechanism for the antidepressive action of RSB is by reducing the expression of LC3-B in CA1 neurons.CONCluSIONS:Our research partially expounds the mechanism of the antidepressant effect of RSB by the combination of network pharmacology prediction and experimental verification.Furthermore,it is also conducive to the application of Traditional Chinese Medicine within modern medicine.

The wrinkling and buckling of graphene induced by nanotwinned copper matrix:A molecular dynamics study

The three-dimensional(3D)graphene-based materials have raised significant interest due to excellent catalytic performance and unique electronic properties,while the preparation of uniform and stable 3D graphene structures remains a challenge.In this paper,using molecular dynamics simulations,we found that the nanotwinned copper(nt-Cu)matrix with small twin spacing can induce the wave-shaped wrinkling and sawtooth-shaped buckling graphene structures under uniaxial compression.The nt-Cu matrix possesses a symmetrical lattice structure for the lattice rotation with the dislocation annihilation,resulting in the transition of sandwiched graphene from 2D to 3D structures with good uniformity.The newly formed twin boundaries(TBs)in the nt-Cu matrix improve the resistance of graphene against the out-of-plane deformation so that graphene can maintain a stable wrinkling or buckling morphology in a wide strain range.These 3D texturing structures show great flexibility and their micro parameters can be controlled by applying different compressive strains.Furthermore,we propose a simple sliding method for decoupling graphene from the nt-Cu matrix without any damage.This work provides a novel strategy to induce and transfer the uniform wrinkling and buckling of graphene,which may expand the application of graphene in energy storage and catalysts.

Metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)are emerging as one of the most intriguing classes of heterogeneous photocatalysts owing to their abundant structures,tunable porosity,and versatile functions.The advantages of bottom-up design and reticular synthesis render MOF materials with desired photocatalytic properties for targeted reactions.In this review,we discussed the design and synthesis of MOF-based photocatalysts as well as strategies for enhancing photocatalytic performance.Recent progress on MOFs as platforms for photocatalytic aerobic oxidation reactions was summarized and categorized according to the types of bond formation.We hope this review will give an in-depth insight into MOF-based photocatalytic systems for not only aerobic oxidation reactions but also other organic transformations.A brief outlook on the challenges and opportunities of MOFs as heterogeneous photocatalysts is provided at the end of the review.

Molecular Detection and Identification of Candidatus Ehrlichia Hainanensis,A Novel Ehrlichia Species in Rodents from Hainan Province,China

Ehrlichia(Anaplasmataceae family)are obligatory intracellular bacteria that infect humans and animals.They are hosted by mammals such as canines,bovines and wild rodents,and are vectored by ticks.In this study,we collected 121 rodent samples comprising 67 Niviventer fulvescens,27 Rattus tanezumi,24 Chiromyscus sp.,2 Rattus nitidus and 1 Leopoldamys edwardsi from Hainan province,which includes the second largest island in China.The presence and genetic diversity of Ehrlichia species was evaluated and characterized by amplification and sequencing of 16S rRNA,groEL and gltA genes.An Ehrlichia species was detected in 5 of the 67 Niviventer fulvescens samples(7.46%).The 16S rRNA,groEL and gltA genes showed the highest identity to known Ehrlichia sequences(99.20%,89.87%and 83.86%,respectively).In the phylogenetic trees they formed a cluster distinct from all other species.We propose that this species is a putative novel Ehrlichia species,which we suggest be named Candidatus Ehrlichia hainanensis.Its pathogenicity to humans remains to be further researched,and molecular surveillance in local populations is needed.

Distribution patterns and industry planning of commonly used traditional Chinese medicinal plants in China

Medicinal plants are the primary material basis for disease prevention and treatment in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM).The conservation and sustainable utilization of these medicinal plants is critical for the development of the TCM industry.However,wild medicinal plant resources have sharply declined in recent decades.To ameliorate the shortage of medicinal plant resources,it is essential to explore the development potential of the TCM industry in different geographical regions.For this purpose,we examined the spatial distribution of commonly used medicinal plants in China,the number of Chinese medicinal material markets,and the number of TCM decoction piece enterprises.Specifically,multispecies superimposition analysis and Thiessen polygons were used to reveal the optimal range for planting bulk medicinal plants and the ideal regions for building Chinese medicinal material markets,respectively.Furthermore,we quantitatively analyzed mismatches between the spatial distribution of commonly used medicinal plant richness,Chinese medicinal material markets,and TCM decoction piece enterprises.We found that the areas suitable for growing commonly used medicinal plants in China were mainly distributed in Hengduan Mountain,Nanling Mountain,Wuling Mountain,and Daba Mountain areas.The Thiessen polygon network based on Chinese medicinal material market localities showed there are currently fewer markets in southwestern,northwestern,and northeastern China than in central and southern China.TCM decoction piece enterprises are concentrated in a few provinces,such as Hebei and Jiangxi.We found that the distribution of commonly used medicinal plants,Chinese medicinal material markets and TCM decoction piece enterprises are mismatched in Henan,Shaanxi,Hunan,Hubei,Zhejiang,Fujian,Chongqing,and Xizang.We recommend strengthening development of the TCM industry in Henan,Hunan,Zhejiang,Shaanxi,Hubei,Chongqing,Fujian,and Xizang;building more Chinese medicinal material markets in southwestern,northwestern,and northeastern China;and e

Sustained release of exosomes loaded into polydopamine-modified chitin conduits promotes peripheral nerve regeneration in rats

Exosomes derived from mesenchymal stem cells are of therapeutic interest because of their important role in intracellular communication and biological regulation.On the basis of previously studied nerve conduits,we designed a polydopamine-modified chitin conduit loaded with mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes that release the exosomes in a sustained and stable manner.In vitro experiments revealed that rat mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes enhanced Schwann cell proliferation and secretion of neurotrophic and growth factors,increased the expression of Jun and Sox2 genes,decreased the expression of Mbp and Krox20 genes in Schwann cells,and reprogrammed Schwann cells to a repair phenotype.Furthermore,mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes promoted neurite growth of dorsal root ganglia.The polydopamine-modified chitin conduits loaded with mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes were used to bridge 2 mm rat sciatic nerve defects.Sustained release of exosomes greatly accelerated nerve healing and improved nerve function.These findings confirm that sustained release of mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes loaded into polydopamine-modified chitin conduits promotes the functional recovery of injured peripheral nerves.

Recent advances in efficient computation of deep convolutional neural networks

Deep neural networks have evolved remarkably over the past few years and they are currently the fundamental tools of many intelligent systems.At the same time,the computational complexity and resource consumption of these networks continue to increase.This poses a significant challenge to the deployment of such networks,especially in real-time applications or on resource-limited devices.Thus,network acceleration has become a hot topic within the deep learning community.As for hardware implementation of deep neural networks,a batch of accelerators based on a field-programmable gate array(FPGA) or an application-specific integrated circuit(ASIC)have been proposed in recent years.In this paper,we provide a comprehensive survey of recent advances in network acceleration,compression,and accelerator design from both algorithm and hardware points of view.Specifically,we provide a thorough analysis of each of the following topics:network pruning,low-rank approximation,network quantization,teacher–student networks,compact network design,and hardware accelerators.Finally,we introduce and discuss a few possible future directions.
