Optical whispering-gallery mode barcodes for high-precision and wide-range temperature measurements

Temperature is one of the most fundamental physical properties to characterize various physical,chemical,and biological processes.Even a slight change in temperature could have an impact on the status or dynamics of a system.Thus,there is a great need for high-precision and large-dynamic-range temperature measurements.Conventional temperature sensors encounter difficulties in high-precision thermal sensing on the submicron scale.Recently,optical whispering-gallery mode(WGM)sensors have shown promise for many sensing applications,such as thermal sensing,magnetic detection,and biosensing.However,despite their superior sensitivity,the conventional sensing method for WGM resonators relies on tracking the changes in a single mode,which limits the dynamic range constrained by the laser source that has to be fine-tuned in a timely manner to follow the selected mode during the measurement.Moreover,we cannot derive the actual temperature from the spectrum directly but rather derive a relative temperature change.Here,we demonstrate an optical WGM barcode technique involving simultaneous monitoring of the patterns of multiple modes that can provide a direct temperature readout from the spectrum.The measurement relies on the patterns of multiple modes in the WGM spectrum instead of the changes of a particular mode.It can provide us with more information than the single-mode spectrum,such as the precise measurement of actual temperatures.Leveraging the high sensitivity of WGMs and eliminating the need to monitor particular modes,this work lays the foundation for developing a high-performance temperature sensor with not only superior sensitivity but also a broad dynamic range.

Prevention strategies of postoperative adhesion in soft tissues by applying biomaterials:Based on the mechanisms of occurrence and development of adhesions

Postoperative adhesion(POA)widely occurs in soft tissues and usually leads to chronic pain,dysfunction of adjacent organs and some acute complications,seriously reducing patients’quality of life and even being life-threatening.Except for adhesiolysis,there are few effective methods to release existing adhesion.However,it requires a second operation and inpatient care and usually triggers recurrent adhesion in a great incidence.Hence,preventing POA formation has been regarded as the most effective clinical strategy.Biomaterials have attracted great attention in preventing POA because they can act as both barriers and drug carriers.Nevertheless,even though much reported research has been demonstrated their efficacy on POA inhibition to a certain extent,thoroughly preventing POA formation is still challenging.Meanwhile,most biomaterials for POA prevention were designed based on limited experiences,not a solid theoretical basis,showing blindness.Hence,we aimed to provide guidance for designing anti-adhesion materials applied in different soft tissues based on the mechanisms of POA occurrence and development.We first classified the postoperative adhesions into four categories according to the different components of diverse adhesion tissues,and named them as“membranous adhesion”,“vascular adhesion”,“adhesive adhesion”and“scarred adhesion”,respectively.Then,the process of the occurrence and development of POA were analyzed,and the main influencing factors in different stages were clarified.Further,we proposed seven strategies for POA prevention by using biomaterials according to these influencing factors.Meanwhile,the relevant practices were summarized according to the corresponding strategies and the future perspectives were analyzed.

Pharmacodynamics material basis and effective mechanisms are the two main issues to decipher the mechnisms of action of Traditional Chinese medicines(TCMs)for the treatment of diseases.TCMs,in“multi-component,multi-target,multi-pathway”paradigm,show satisfactory clinical results in complex diseases.New ideas and methods are urgently needed to explain the complex interactions between TCMs and diseases.Network pharmacology(NP)provides a novel paradigm to uncover and visualize the underlying interaction networks of TCMs against multifactorial diseases.The development and application of NP has promoted the safety,efficacy,and mechanism investigations of TCMs,which then reinforces the credibility and popularity of TCMs.The current organcentricity of medicine and the“one disease-one target-one drug”dogma obstruct the understanding of complex diseases and the development of effective drugs.Therefore,more attentions should be paid to shift from“phenotype and symptom”to“endotype and cause”in understanding and redefining current diseases.In the past two decades,with the advent of advanced and intelligent technologies(such as metabolomics,proteomics,transcriptomics,single-cell omics,and artificial intelligence),NP has been improved and deeply implemented,and presented its great value and potential as the next drug-discovery paradigm.NP is developed to cure causal mechanisms instead of treating symptoms.This review briefly summarizes the recent research progress on NP application in TCMs for efficacy research,mechanism elucidation,target prediction,safety evaluation,drug repurposing,and drug design.

Quantitative Analysis of Natural and Human Factors of Oasis Change in the Tail of Shiyang River over the Past 60 Years

The human and natural factors complicit in the driving forces of oasis change have always received considerable interest from the international research community. In this study, we used principal component analysis of natural and socio-economic statistical factors to quantitatively analyze the causal relationships and their contributions to the observed periodic expansion or shrinkage of the Minqin Oasis over almost 60 years. Our results show that human factors were the dominant factors governing expansion or shrinkage, with average contributions of 69.38% and 76.16%, respectively. Moreover, policy decisions have been the pivotal human factors. Under the influence of various policies, we have found that water resource utilization, land reclamation, population explosion, ecological protection and economic development have each played leading roles in different periods. This study provides a scientific basis for modelling the dynamics of an oasis for sustainable management.

Cluster voltage control method for “Whole County” distributed photovoltaics based on improved differential evolution algorithm

China is vigorously promoting the “whole county promotion” of distributed photovoltaics (DPVs). However, the high penetration rate of DPVs has brought problems such as voltage violation and power quality degradation to the distribution network, seriously affecting the safety and reliability of the power system. The traditional centralized control method of the distribution network has the problem of low efficiency, which is not practical enough in engineering practice. To address the problems, this paper proposes a cluster voltage control method for distributed photovoltaic grid-connected distribution network. First, it partitions the distribution network into clusters, and different clusters exchange terminal voltage information through a “virtual slack bus.” Then, in each cluster, based on the control strategy of “reactive power compensation first, active power curtailment later,” it employs an improved differential evolution (IDE) algorithm based on Cauchy disturbance to control the voltage. Simulation results in two different distribution systems show that the proposed method not only greatly improves the operational efficiency of the algorithm but also effectively controls the voltage of the distribution network, and maximizes the consumption capacity of DPVs based on qualified voltage.

A New Method for Quality Control of Chinese Rawinsonde Wind Observations

In 2006,the National Meteorological Information Center （NMIC） of the China Meteorological Administration （CMA） developed its real-time quality control （QC） system of rawinsonde observations coming from the Global Telecommunications System （GTS） and established the Global Upper-air Report Dataset,which,with the NMIC B01 format,is generally referred to as the B01 dataset and updated on a daily basis.However,when the B01 dataset is applied in climate analysis,some wind errors as well as some accurate values with incorrect error marks are found.To improve the quality and usefulness of Chinese rawinsonde wind observations,a new QC method （NewQC） is proposed in this paper.Different from the QC approach used for B01 datasets,the NewQC includes two vertical-wind-shear checks to analyze the vertical consistency of winds,in which the constant height level winds are used as reference data for the QC of mandatory pressure level winds.Different threshold values are adopted in the wind shear checks for different stations and different vertical levels.Several typical examples of QC of different error types by the new algorithm are shown and its performance with respect to 1980-2008 observational data is statistically evaluated.Compared with the radiosonde QC algorithms used in both the Meteorological Assimilation Data Ingest System （MADIS,http：//madis.***.gov/madis_raob_qc.html） of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration （NOAA） and the B01 dataset,the NewQC shows higher accuracy and better reliability,particularly when used to judge successive observation errors.

The ultrathin body of two-dimensional(2D)materials provides potential for next-generation electronics and optoelectronics.The unavoidable atomic defects substantially determine the physical properties of atomic-level thin 2D materials,thus enabling new functionalities that are impossible in three-dimensional semiconductors.Therefore,rational design of atomic defects provides an alternative approach to modulate the physical properties of 2D materials.In this review,we summarize the recent progress of defect engineering in 2D materials,particularly in device performance enhancement.Firstly,the common defects in 2D materials and approaches for generating and repairing defects,including synthesis and post-growth treatments,are systematically introduced.The correlations between defects and optical,electronic,and magnetic properties of 2D materials are then highlighted.Subsequently,defect engineering for high performance electronics and optoelectronics is emphasized.At last,we provide our perspective on challenges and opportunities in defect engineering of 2D materials.

How to improve the COVID-19 health education strategy in impoverished regions:a pilot study

Background:It is of great challenge to raise the public coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)related health literacy(CRHL)in impoverished regions due to the limits of poor infrastructure,large proportion of vulnerable groups,etc.However,those limits cannot be solved in the short term.Therefore,this study chose Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture,one of the poorest areas in China,as a pilot,to reveal the quantitative relationships among diferent dimensions under the COVID-19 health education framework,clarify the key points for health promotion,and provide specifc suggestions for COVID-19 health education strategy in impoverished regions.Methods:A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted in fve regions of Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in 2020.There were 2,100 individuals sampled by multi-stage method.This survey mainly measured the four dimensions:CRHL,COVID-19 related tense psychological reactions(CRTPR),COVID-19 related information report acquisition(CRIRA),and general health literacy(GHL).The multivariate logistic regression was used to explore the infuence of demographic characteristics on each dimension.Furthermore,to quantify the relationships among different dimensions,this study employed the structural equation model(SEM),and analyzed the mediating efects of CRHL and CRIRA as well as the moderating efects of regional characteristic variables.Results:The CRHL played an important role in promoting COVID-19 health education,reaching 52.5%in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture.The GHL(β=0.336)and age(β=0.136)had statistically positive impacts on CRHL.The CRHL afected CRTPR negatively(β=−0.198)and CRIRA positively(β=0.052).The CRHL played signifcant mediating roles among the four dimensions(P<0.05).Efectiveness of government prevention and control as well as the ethnicity moderated not only the relationships between CRHL and other dimensions,but also the mediating efect of CRHL(P<0.05).People with lower income and education levels had lower GHL(β=0.286,1.292).The youth were more likely to show CRTPR(β

The reversible and precise temporal and spatial regulation of histone lysine methyltransferases(KMTs)is essential for epigenome homeostasis.The dysregulation of KMTs is associated with tumor initiation,metastasis,chemoresistance,invasiveness,and the immune microenvironment.Therapeutically,their promising effects are being evaluated in diversified preclinical and clinical trials,demonstrating encouraging outcomes in multiple malignancies.In this review,we have updated recent understandings of KMTs'functions and the development of their targeted inhibitors.First,we provide an updated overview of the regulatory roles of several KMT activities in oncogenesis,tumor suppression,and immune regulation.In addition,we summarize the current targeting strategies in different cancer types and multiple ongoing clinical trials of combination therapies with KMT inhibitors.In summary,we endeavor to depict the regulation of KMT-mediated epigenetic landscape and provide potential epigenetic targets in the treatment of cancers.

Anti-parity-time symmetry hidden in a damping linear resonator

Phase transition from the over-damping to under-damping states is a ubiquitous phenomenon in physical systems. However, what kind of symmetry is broken associated with this phase transition remains unclear. Here, we discover that this phase transition is determined by an anti-parity-time(anti-PT) symmetry hidden in a single damping linear resonator, which is significantly different from the conventional anti-PT-symmetric systems with two or more modes. We show that the breaking of the anti-PT symmetry yields the phase transition from the over-damping to under-damping states, with an exceptional point(EP) corresponding to the critical-damping state. Moreover, we propose an optomechanical scheme to show this anti-PT symmetry breaking by using the optical spring effect in a quadratic optomechanical system. We also suggest an optomechanical sensor with the sensitivity enhanced significantly around the EPs for the anti-PT symmetry breaking. Our work unveils the anti-PT symmetry hidden in damping oscillations and hence opens up new possibilities for exploiting wide anti-PT symmetry applications in single damping linear resonators.
