FATIGUE LIVES FOR INDUCTION HARDENED SHAFTS MATERIALS ACCORDING TO THE ENVIRONMENTAL TEMPERATURES

Rotary bending fatigue tests were carried out with two kinds of materials, S43C and S50C, using the front engine and front drive shaft （FF shaft） of vehicle. The specimens were induction hardened about 1.0mm depth from the specimen surface, and the hardness value on the surface was about HRC56-60. The tested environment temperatures were -30, 25 and 80℃ in order to look over effect of the induction hardening and the environmental temperatures on the fatigue characteristics. The fatigue limit of induction hardened specimens increased more about 45% than non-hardened specimens showing that the endurances of S43C and S50C were 98.1 and 107.9MPa in non-hardened samples, 147.1 and 156.9MPa in hardened samplesrespectably. The maximum tensile and compressive stress on the small circular defect was about ＋250 and -450MPa respectively when circular defect is situated on top and bottom. The fatigue life increased 80, 25 and -30℃ in order regardless of hardening. In comparison of the fatigue lives on the basis of tested result at 25℃, the fatigue lives of non-hardened specimens decreased about 35%, but that of hardened specimens decreased about only 5% at 80℃ more than at 25℃. And fatigue life of non-hardened and hardened specimens were about 110% and 120% higher at -30℃ than that of 25℃. Based on the result of stress distribution near the defect, the tensile and compressive stress repeatedly generated by load direction were the largest on the small circular defect due to the stress concentration.

Dye-sensitized solar cells based on functionalized truxene structure

Three new metal-free organic dyes （TX1, TX2 and TX3） based on truxene core structure, with triphenylamine as the electron donor, thiophene as the n spacers, and cyanoacetic acid or rhodanine-3- acetic acid as the electron acceptor are designed and synthesized. Their UV-vis absorption spectra, electrochemical and photovoltaic properties were investigated. The cyanoacrylic acid is verified to be a better acceptor unit （meanwhile the anchoring group） compared to the rhodanine-3-acetic acid. And also, two anchoring groups in TX2 could provide stronger adsorption ability on the TiO2 surface. In addition, the EIS results indicate a slower charge recombination processes for TX2. As a result, dye TX2 bearing two cyanoacetic acid outperforms the other two dyes, exhibiting the photo-conversion efficiency of 2.64%, with Jsc = 5.09 mAcm^-2, Voc = 729 mV, FF = 71.1.

Diurnal and Seasonal Variations of Thermal Stratification and Vertical Mixing in a Shallow Fresh Water Lake

Among several influential factors, the geographical position and depth of a lake determine its thermal structure. In temperate zones, shallow lakes show significant differences in thermal stratification compared to deep lakes. Here,the variation in thermal stratification in Lake Taihu, a shallow fresh water lake, is studied systematically. Lake Taihu is a warm polymictic lake whose thermal stratification varies in short cycles of one day to a few days. The thermal stratification in Lake Taihu has shallow depths in the upper region and a large amplitude in the temperature gradient,the maximum of which exceeds 5°C m–1. The water temperature in the entire layer changes in a relatively consistent manner. Therefore, compared to a deep lake at similar latitude, the thermal stratification in Lake Taihu exhibits small seasonal differences, but the wide variation in the short term becomes important. Shallow polymictic lakes share the characteristic of diurnal mixing. Prominent differences on the duration and frequency of long-lasting thermal stratification are found in these lakes, which may result from the differences of local climate, lake depth, and fetch. A prominent response of thermal stratification to weather conditions is found, being controlled by the stratifying effect of solar radiation and the mixing effect of wind disturbance. Other than the diurnal stratification and convection, the representative responses of thermal stratification to these two factors with contrary effects are also discussed. When solar radiation increases, stronger wind is required to prevent the lake from becoming stratified. A daily average wind speed greater than 6 m s–1 can maintain the mixed state in Lake Taihu. Moreover, wind-induced convection is detected during thermal stratification. Due to lack of solar radiation, convection occurs more easily in nighttime than in daytime. Combination of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and homocysteine may predict an increased risk of coronary artery disease in Korean population

Background The association of emerging biomarkers such as high-sensitivity C-reactive protein （hs-CRP）,homocysteine and fibrinogen with the risk of coronary artery disease （CAD） is still uncertain in Asian population including Koreans and little is known about the combined effect of biomarkers on the risk of *** A total of 10 650 subjects （6538 men and 4112 women） were enrolled in this study.A 10-year CAD risk was calculated using Framingham risk score modified by the National Cholesterol Education Program （NCEP） Adult Treatment Panel Ⅲ （ATP Ⅲ ） and levels of circulating hs-CRP,homocysteine and fibrinogen were measured using validated *** The 10-year CAD risk gradually augmented with increase in the circulating levels of hs-CRP,homocysteine and *** the highest quartile of hs-CRP,odds ratio （OR） of high-risk for CAD （10-year risk ≥20%） compared with the lowest quartile was 3.97 （95% C/：2.51-6.29）.For homocysteine and fibrinogen,ORs in the highest quartile compared to the lowest quartile were 5.10 （95% Cl：3.05-8.53,P 〈0.001） and 1.46 （95% Cl：0.69-3.11,P=0.325）,*** of high-risk for CAD in both the highest quartile of hs-CRP and homocysteine was 9.05 （95% CI：5.30-15.45） compared with the below median of hs-CRP and *** The present study demonstrated that hs-CRP and homocysteine are well associated with the 10-year CAD risk estimated using NCEP ATP Ⅲ in Koreans and combination of hs-CRP and homocysteine can have strong synergyin predicting the development of CAD.

Current surgical treatments for Parkinson's disease and potential therapeutic targets

Currently, the most common surgical treatment for Parkinson＇s disease is deep brain stimulation（DBS）. This treatment strategy is typically reserved for bradykinesia, rigidity and tremor in patients who no longer respond to medication in a predictable manner or who suffer medication-induced dyskinesias. In addition to DBS, ablative procedures like radiofrequency, radiosurgery and focused ultrasound are also utilized for select tremor symptoms. In this review, we discuss evolving surgical techniques, targets, and emerging technology. In addition, we evaluate potential paradigm shifts in treatment, including gene therapy, immunotherapy and cell transplantation. While these new techniques and treatment options are still in their infancy, advances in Parkinson＇s disease treatment are rapidly expanding.

Jeju seaweeds suppress lipopolysaccharide-stimulated proinflammatory response in RAW 264.7 murine macrophages

Objective:To investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of Jeju seaweeds on macrophage RAW264.7 cells under lipopolysaccharide(LPS)***:Ethyl acetate fractions were prepared from five different types of Jeju seaweeds,Dictyopteris divaricata(***),Dictyopteris prolifera(***),Prioutis cornea(***,Grateloupia laceolata(G,lanceolate,and Cralcloupia filicina(***)They were screened for inhibitory effects on proinflammatory mediators and cytokines such as nitric oxide(NO),prostaglandin E,,tumor necrosis factor-a(TNF-a),and interleukin-6(11.-6).Results:Our results revealed that ***,***,***,***,and *** potently inhibited ***-stimulaled NO production(IC_(50),values were 18.0,38.36,38.43,32.81 and 37.14μg/mL,respectively).Consistent with these findings,***,***,***,and *** also reduced the IPS-induced and prostaglandin E,production in a concentration-dependent ***,they suppressed the expression of inducible NO synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 at the protein level in a dose-dependent manner in the RAW264.7 cells,as detennined by western *** addition,the levels of TNF-a and IL-6,released into the medium,were also reduced by ***,***,***,G,lanceolata,and *** in a dose-dependent manner(IC_(50)values for TNF-a were 16.11,28.21,84.27,45.52 and74.75μg/mL,respectively;IC_(50),values for IL-6 were 37.35,80.08,103.28,62.53 and 84.28μg/mL,respectively).The total phlorotannin content was measured by the Folin-Ciocalteu method and expressed as phloroglucinol *** content was 92.0μg/mg for ***,151.8μg/mg for ***,57.2μg/mg for ***,53.0 pg/mg for ***,and 40.2μg/mg for ***:Thus,these findings suggest that Jeju seaweed extracts have potential therapeutic applications for inflammatory responses.

Stacking plates of CFRP composite materials are increasingly used because of their unique characteristics. However, unlike other materials used in metallurgy they have a disadvantage of uneven quality and anisotropy when combined with other composites. Hence, specimens of CFRP stacking plates are manufactured by changing orientation angles throughout three quasiisotropic plies （0°/45°/90°/-45°）68, （03°/453°/903°/-453°）2s, and （06°/456°/906°/-456°）s and throughout three cross plies （0°/90°/0°/90°）68, （03 °/903 °/03°/903°）2s, and （06 °/906 °/06°/906°）8 In this study 3-point bending tests and transverse bending tests have been carried out in order to find out mechanical characteristics according to orientation angles by stacking in 6 different types along with the change of stacking composition method of a CFRP composite.

Recurrent giant fibrovascular polyp of the esophagus

Giant fibrovascular polyps of the esophagus and hypopharynx are rare benign esophageal tumors. They arise most commonly in the upper esophagus and may, rarely, originate in the hypopharynx. They can vary significantly in size. Even though they are benign, they may be lethal due to either bleeding or, rarely, asphyxiation if a large polyp is regurgitated. Patients commonly present with dysphagia or hematemesis. The polyps may not be well visualized on endoscopy and imaging plays a vital role in aiding diagnosis as well as providing important information for preoperative planning, such as the location of the pedicle, the vascularity of the polyp and the tissue elements of the mass. They can also be recurrent in rare cases, especially if the resection margins of the base are involved. We review the recent literature and report a case of a 61-year-old man with a recurrent giant esophageal fibrovascular polyp with illustrative contrast barium swallow, CT and intra-operative images, who required several surgeries via a combination of endoscopic, trans-oral, trans-cervical, trans-thoracic and trans-abdominal approaches.
