Bojungbangdocktang inhibits vascular endothelial growth factor induced angiogenesis via blocking the VEGF/VEGFR2 signaling pathway in human umbilical vein endothelial cells

Oriental herbal medicines have been widely used for the prevention or treatment of various diseases including cancer in Asia. However, to prove their chemo preventive efficacies in modern times, scientific evidence for those herbal medicines is required. Thus, in the present study, an effective herbal cocktail Bojungbangdocktang (BJBDT) was investigated to elucidate antiangiogenic mechanism in vitro and in vivo. BJBDT significantly inhibited vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) induced proliferation in HUVECs at nontoxic concentrations, despite weak cytotoxicity against human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). BJBDT also significantly suppressed VEGF-induced migration and tube formation of HUVECs. Furthermore, BJBDT treatment resulted in pale color and low hemoglobin level in Matrigel plugs, as well as dark red color and high hemoglobin level in untreated control. Interestingly, BJBDT specifically inhibited the binding of VEGF to vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2), but not VEGFR1. In addition, friedelin, formononetin, ginsenoside Rb1, naringin, atractyloside, diosgenin, and allantonin were identified from BJBDT by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis as a quality of control. Taken together, these results suggest that BJBDT is a potent angiogenesis inhibitor blocking the VEGF/VEGFR2 signaling pathway in HUVECs.

One-to-many authentication for access control in mobile pay-TV systems

In traditional authentication schemes for access control in mobile pay-TV systems, one-to-one delivery is used, i.e., one authentication message per request is delivered from a head-end system(HES) to a subscriber. The performance of one-to-one delivery for authentication is not satisfactory as it requires frequent operations which results in high bandwidth consumption. To address this issue, one-to-many authentication for access control in mobile pay-TV systems was developed. It requires only one broadcasted authentication message from a HES to subscribers if there are many requests for the same service in a short period of ***, later it was revealed that the one-to-many authentication scheme was vulnerable to an impersonation attack, i.e., an attacker without any secret key could not only impersonate the mobile set(MS) to the HES but also impersonate the HES to the MS. Then, a new scheme has been recently introduced for secure operations of one-to-many authentication. However, as shown in this paper, the recent work for one-to-many authentication is still vulnerable to the impersonation attack. To mitigate this attack, in this paper, a new scheme for one-tomany authentication using bilinear pairing is proposed that eliminates security weaknesses in the previous *** obtained depict that the new improved scheme in this paper provides better performance in terms of computation and communication overheads.

Amidst the ever-growing interest in high-mass-loading Li battery electrodes,a persistent challenge has been the insufficient continuity of their ion/electron conduction ***,we propose cellulose elementary fibrils(CEFs)as a class of deagglomerated binder for high-mass-loading *** from natural wood,CEF represents the most fundamental unit of cellulose with nanoscale *** preparation of the CEFs involves the modulation of intermolecular hydrogen bonding by the treatment with a proton acceptor and a hydrotropic *** elementary deagglomeration of the cellulose fibers increases surface area and anionic charge density,thus promoting uniform dispersion with carbon conductive additives and suppressing interfacial side reactions at ***,a homogeneous redox reaction is achieved throughout the *** resulting CEF-based cathode(overlithiated layered oxide(OLO)is chosen as a benchmark electrode active material)exhibits a high areal-mass-loading(50 mg cm^(-2),equivalent to an areal capacity of 12.5 mAh cm^(-2))and a high specific energy density(445.4 Wh kg–1)of a cell,which far exceeds those of previously reported OLO *** study highlights the viability of the deagglomerated binder in enabling sustainable high-mass-loading electrodes that are difficult to achieve with conventional synthetic polymer binders.

A manual acupuncture treatment attenuates common cold and its symptoms: a case series report from South Korea

OBJECTIVE: To investigate beneficial effects of manual acupuncture on common cold periods and its symptoms depended on the difference onset time of common cold, within 36 h or over than that. To prove effects of manual acupuncture on common cold, a retrospective chart review was ***: Chart data for patients with commoncold who were treated with only manual acupuncture with fulfilling Jackson scales and satisfaction at the end of each treatment were collected via multi-centers of Oriental hospitals,Oriental medicine clinics and covalent hospital in South Korea. Totally 187 patients were divided into two groups, Group Ⅰ(115 patients, within 36 h)and Group Ⅱ(72 patients, onset time of cold over than 36 h). Finally 120 patients were observed until entire resolution of cold ***: GroupⅠ showed significant decreases themediandurationsofcompletelyrecovery(3 days;95% CI 3.0-4.0) as compared with Group Ⅱ(6 days;95% CI 4.0-7.0, P < 0.001). Hepatic resection vs percutaneous radiofrequency ablation of hepatocellular carcinoma abutting right diaphragm

BACKGROUND It is usually difficult to adequately conduct percutaneous ultrasound-guided radiofrequency(RF) ablation for hepatocellular carcinomas(HCCs) abutting the diaphragm. Our hypothesis was that the subphrenic location of HCC could have an effect on the long-term therapeutic outcomes after hepatic resection and RF *** To compare the long-term therapeutic outcomes of hepatic resection and percutaneous RF ablation for HCCs abutting the *** A total of 143 Child-Pugh class A patients who had undergone hepatic resection(n = 80) or percutaneous ultrasound-guided RF ablation(n = 63) for an HCC(≤ 3 cm) abutting the right diaphragm were included. Cumulative local tumor progression(LTP), cumulative intrahepatic distant recurrence(IDR), disease-free survival(DFS), and overall survival(OS) rates were estimated. Prognostic factors for DFS and OS were analyzed. Complications were *** The cumulative IDR rate, DFS rate, and OS rate for the hepatic resection group and RF ablation group at 5 years were "35.9% vs 65.8%", "64.1% vs 18.3%", and"88.4% vs 68.7%", respectively. Hepatic resection was an independent prognostic factor for DFS(P ≤ 0.001; hazard ratio, 0.352; 95%CI: 0.205, 0.605; with RF ablation as the reference category); however, treatment modality was not an independent prognostic factor for OS. The LTP rate was 46.6% at 5 years for the RF ablation group. The major complication rate was not significantly different between the groups(P = 0.630). The rate of occurrence of peritoneal seeding was higher in the RF ablation group(1.3% vs 9.5%, P = 0.044).CONCLUSION Although OS was not significantly different between patients who had gone hepatic resection or percutaneous RF ablation for HCCs abutting the diaphragm,DFS was better in the hepatic resection group.
