There are several design equations available for calculating the torsional compliance and the maximum torsion stress of a rectangular cross-section beam, but most depend on the relative magnitude of the two dimensions of the crosssection(i.e., the thickness and the width). After reviewing the available equations, two thickness-to-width ratio Independent equations that are symmetric with respect to the two dimensions are obtained for evaluating the maximum torsion stress of rectangular cross-section beams. Based on the resulting equations, outside lamina emergent torsional joints are analyzed and some useful design Insights are obtained. These equations, together with the previous work on symmetric equations for calculating torsional compliance, provide a convenient and effective way for designing and optimizing torsional beams in compliant mechanisms.

Integral abutment bridges(IABs)minimize deterioration and degradation of the abutment seats and bearings due to water,dirt,and deicing chemicals by eliminating bearings and expansion *** the continuity between superstructure and abutments in an IAB is beneficial for reducing maintenance costs,it leads to more complex behavior under strength and service loading(temperature and traffic)and extreme loading(earthquake).The coupling of superstructure and substructure behavior necessitates system-level analysis of *** seismic IAB studies have typically investigated the behavior of individual IAB components,however a gap of knowledge has developed due to the lack of studies and investigation about the behavior of all IAB components and their interactions with each other in a single analysis *** study uses nonlinear static and dynamic analyses to investigate and assess the seismic behavior of IABs typical to the state of *** analyses aim to bridge the gap of knowledge by evaluating IABs as a whole and utilizing the results to indicate potential vulnerabilities in the design and construction of IABs in Illinois during design-level and larger seismic events,which could not be identified by component-level IAB analyses alone.

In recent years, investigators have noted a trend toward a declining proportion of male births in many industrialized nations. While men bear the sex-determining chromosome, the role of the female partner as it pertains to fertilization or miscarriage may also alter the gender ratio. We attempted to determine a man＇s secondary sex ratio （F1 generation） by directly examining the sex chromosomes of his sperm. We examined our male infertility clinic database for all men who had undergone a semen fluorescence in situ hybridization （FISH）. Patient demographic and semen parameters were recorded. Chi-squared analysis was used to compare gender ratios （Y chromosomes/total chromosomes）. Multivariable logistic regression was used to predict the odds of possessing a Y-bearing sperm after accounting for demographic and semen parameters. A total of 185 men underwent sperm FISH. For the entire cohort, the proportion of Y chromosome-bearing sperm was 51.5%. Men with less than five million motile sperm had a significantly lower proportion of Y chromosome-bearing sperm （50.8%） compared to men with higher sperm counts （51.6%; P= 0.02）. After multivariable adjustment, a higher sperm concentration, total motile sperm count and semen volume significantly increased the odds of having a Y chromosome-bearing sperm （P〈0.01）. As a man＇s sperm production declines, so does the proportion of Y chromosome-bearing sperm. Thus, a man＇s reproductive potential may predict his ability to sire male offspring.

Highly efficient regeneration of natural zeolite was developed in conjunction with the removal of high concentrations of ammonia and potassium from the reverse osmosis effluent of anaerobic-digested wastewater by fixed-bed ion *** elution and uptake behavior of ammonium and potassium in the fixed bed were *** batch desorption tests and on-column regeneration were conducted to develop an optimum regeneration condition compatible with the wastewater *** effectiveness of ammonium elution increased with increasing alkaline *** increase of salt dose significantly enhanced the ammonium maximum in the elution *** ammonium elution was achieved in 6 bed volumes（BV） when the alkaline and salt concentrations were respectively 0.1 mol/l and 18.6 g/l at a flow rate of 2.5-3.0 BV/*** to the higher affinity of potassium with natural clinoptilolite,complete potassium elution was not achieved in all cases.

We consider context-free grammars of the form G = {f → f^b1＋b2＋1g^a1＋a2, g → f^b1 g^a1＋1},where ai and bi are integers sub ject to certain positivity conditions. Such a grammar G gives rise to triangular arrays {T（n, k）}0≤k≤n satisfying a three-term recurrence relation. Many combinatorial sequences can be generated in this way. let Tn （x） =∑k=0^n T（n, k）x^k. Based on the differential operator with respect to G, we define a sequence of linear operators Pn such that Tn＋1（x） = Pn（Tn（x））. Applying the characterization of real stability preserving linear operators on the multivariate polynomials due to Borcea and Br？ndén, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the operator Pn to be real stability preserving for any n. As a consequence, we are led to a sufficient condition for the real-rootedness of the polynomials defined by certain triangular arrays, obtained by Wang and ***, as special cases we obtain grammars that lead to identities involving the Whitney numbers and the Bessel numbers.

Phosphodiesterase 1:a unique therapeutic target with multiple potential indications

Cyclic-nucleotide phosphodiesterase 1(PDE1) is a unique enzyme family hydrolyzing both cyclic guanosine monophosphate(cGMP) and cyclic adenosine monophosphate(cAMP) intra-cellular signaling molecules. A unique aspect of this enzyme family is its activation by calcium-calmodulin upon excitation of excitatory cells such as neurons and cardiomyocytes. In chronic degenerative diseases such as Parkinson disease,Alzheimer disease and heart failure,over-stimulation and chronic excessive levels of intra-cellular calcium leads to cell death. Targeting the PDE1 enzyme family with enzyme inhibitors is a novel approach to develop therapeutic agents for degenerative disorders. ITI-214 is a potent,and selective PDE1 inhibitor that has been tested in four human clinical trials. It is safe and well tolerated even at high dose levels that lead to high plasma and cerebral spinal fluid levels. In animal models,ITI-214 has cognitive enhancing properties as demonstrated in the rat novel object recognition model. Using a unilateral 6-hydroxy-dopamine lesion mouse model,the cylinder test readout of front paw use indicated that ITI-214 displays l-DOPA sparing effects ITI-214 reverses catalepsy induced by the potent dopamine D2 receptor antagonist haloperidol,indicating potential applications in Parkinson disease and as an adjunctive treatment in schizophrenia. Aspects of the Intra-Cellular Therapies PDE1 inhibitor program wil be outlined and the potential application to multiple therapeutic areas wil be discussed.

Objective:Does TMJ nociception,as measured by a behavioral assay,differ during pregnancy,potentially due to the effect of sex steroids?Methods:Thirty-two Sprague Dawley rats were randomly allocated to either mid-(E11)or late-(E17)pregnancy *** animals within each group were further allocated to a saline or CFA *** E11 or E17,the animals were injected bilaterally into TMJ with either saline(15μl)or 1μg/μl CFA(15μl).Nociception was measured with a feeding assay(pellet recording)and analyzed by comparing intra-meal rates using a distance-based permutation ***:CFA injection resulted in the animals eating longer in both the mid-pregnant and late-pregnant *** estradiol was higher in the late-pregnant group versus the mid-pregnant ***,the CFA injected late-pregnant group ate for a shorter amount of time(i.e.,shorter meal rate)than the CFA injected rats at ***:The reduced nociceptive response(shorter meal rate)in the CFA injected late-pregnant group may be due to greater estradiol versus the CFA injected mid-pregnancy ***,one potential reason why women report fewer TMJ symptoms during pregnancy is the higher level of circulating estradiol.

Chronology of Bioactive Glass Development and Clinical Applications

The key research and development steps for bioactive glass (45S5 Bioglass) are documented from the date of discovery in 1969 through FDA approvals of the first dental, ENT, maxillo-facial and orthopedic clinical products. Understanding the mechanisms and quantifying the rapid surface reactions to form a bone-bonding hydroxyl-carbonate apatite (HCA) layer on the bioactive glass in contact with living bone was a vital part of the early development of this class of biomaterials. A key later discovery was enhanced osteogenesis and in situ bone regeneration by controlled release of ionic dissolution products from the bioactive glass particulates that leads to up-regulation and activation of seven families of genes, a process called osteostimulation.
