A photoluminescence study of plasma reactive ion etching-induced damage in GaN

GaN films with reactive ion etching （RIE） induced damage were analyzed using photoluminescence （Pl）. We observed band-edge as well as donor-acceptor peaks with associated phonon replicas, all in agreement with previous studies. While both the control and damaged samples have their band-edge peak location change with temperature following the Varshni formula, its intensity however decreases with damage while the D-A peak increases considerably. Nitrogen post-etch plasma was shown to improve the band edge peak and decrease the D-A peak. This suggests that the N2 plasma has helped reduce the number of trapped carriers that were participating in the D-A transition and made the D°X transition more active, which reaffirms the N2 post-etch plasma treatment as a good technique to heal the GaN surface, most likely by filling the nitrogen vacancies previously created by etch damage.

Studies of Adsorption of Cadmium Ions by Biowaste Adsorbent from Aqueous Solutions with Ion-Selective Electrodes and ICP-OES

Using environment-friendly and low-cost biowaste adsorbents as toxic metal ion removal substrates from aqueous solutions has a great economic advantage. This work evaluated pumpkin and potato peel biowastes for the adsorption of cadmium ions. The biowastes were treated with acid or base. Batch experiments were carried out by introducing a known concentration of metal ion solution into the biowaste sorbent at various pH levels. The pH and metal ion concentration was monitored with pH and cadmium ion-selective electrode continuously for two hours, and the final concentration for the metal ion after 24 hours was measured with the cadmium electrode and then confirmed with ICP-OES. l-type isotherms were obtained that fit to Freundlich model. Adsorption isotherms showed chemical adsorption and the kinetics following the second order model. Equilibrium adsorption capacity is higher than 29 mg/g at pH 5.6 when the initial concentration is 220 ppm. Dynamic cadmium adsorption capacity is 17 mg/g from aqueous solution when the feed solution is 220 ppm with pumpkin peel biowaste sorbent. The biowaste materials can be regenerated with acid washing.

Osteomyelitis is a devastating disease caused by microbial infection of bone. While the frequency of infection following elective orthopedic surgery is low, rates of reinfection are disturbingly high. Staphylococcus aureus is responsible for the majority of chronic osteomyelitis cases and is often considered to be incurable due to bacterial persistence deep within bone. Unfortunately, there is no consensus on clinical classifications of osteomyelitis and the ensuing treatment algorithm. Given the high patient morbidity,mortality, and economic burden caused by osteomyelitis, it is important to elucidate mechanisms of bone infection to inform novel strategies for prevention and curative treatment. Recent discoveries in this field have identified three distinct reservoirs of bacterial biofilm including: Staphylococcal abscess communities in the local soft tissue and bone marrow, glycocalyx formation on implant hardware and necrotic tissue, and colonization of the osteocyte-lacuno canalicular network(OlCN) of cortical bone. In contrast, S.aureus intracellular persistence in bone cells has not been substantiated in vivo, which challenges this mode of chronic osteomyelitis. There have also been major advances in our understanding of the immune proteome against S. aureus, from clinical studies of serum antibodies and media enriched for newly synthesized antibodies(MENSA), which may provide new opportunities for osteomyelitis diagnosis, prognosis, and vaccine development. Finally, novel therapies such as antimicrobial implant coatings and antibiotic impregnated 3D-printed scaffolds represent promising strategies for preventing and managing this devastating disease. Here, we review these recent advances and highlight translational opportunities towards a cure.

Carpobrotus edulis(l.) N.E.Br. extract as a skin preserving agent: From traditional medicine to scientific validation

Objective:Carpobrotus edulis(l.)N.E.Br.is a succulent perennial plant native to South Africa and grows invasively in the Mediterranean basin.It is commonly used for the treatment of various diseases,including skin wound healing and regeneration,for which experimental validation is lacking.We therefore evaluated the skin healing properties by testing a C.edulis aqueous leaf extract(CAE)on cell cultures and in enzymatic assays.Methods:Micro-morphological analysis of leaves was carried out using scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy.Phytochemical features and antioxidant activity of CAE were evaluated by reversed-phase liquid chromatography coupled with diode array detection and electrospray ion trap mass spectrometry(RP-lC-DAD-ESI-MS),and in vitro cell-free assays.Biological activities were evaluated using keratinocytes and fibroblasts,as well as elastase,collagenase,and hyaluronidase.Results:CAE showed high carbohydrates(28.59%±0.68%),total phenols([101.9±6.0]g gallic acid equivalents/kg dry extract[DE]),and flavonoids([545.9±26.0]g rutin equivalents/kg DE).RP-lC-DAD-ESI-MS revealed the predominant presence of hydroxycinnamic acids(51.96%),followed by tannins(14.82%)and flavonols(11.32%).The extract was not cytotoxic,had a strong and dose-dependent antioxidant activity,and inhibited collagenase(>90%at 500 mg/m l)and hyaluronidase(100%at 1000 mg/m l).In cell culture experiments,CAE increased wound closure and collagen production,which was consistent with its high polyphenol content.Conclusion:Our data support the use of the C.edulis for skin care and the treatment of skin problems.Moreover,use of C.edulis for skin care purposes could be an eco-friendly solution to reduce its invasiveness in the environment.

le="text-align:justify;"> Genome-wide association studies have identified numerous genetic variants for type 2 diabetes (T2D). Most genetic loci discovered to date were studied in Caucasians or Asian ancestry, however, there are no data regarding a quite large Italian sample. Therefore, we investigated T2D genetic susceptibility of 143 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within 30 genes involved in glucose metabolism in a large Italian case-control study. For the study, 1875 Caucasian patients were selected from three Italian cohorts. Age, gender, BMI and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) values were collected. Population was split in cases and controls based on FPG values or T2D diagnosis. T2D subjects and whom with FPG higher that 126 mg/dL were recruited as cases whereas subjects with normal values of FPG were considered controls. In each subject 143 SNPs were genotyped. To evaluate the association between genetic variations and diabetes status, a logistic regression analysis, adjusted for age, sex and BMI, was performed. Overall, 948 (50.6%) had T2D. Twenty out of 143 variants within 11 different genes resulted significantly associated to T2D. Four of them were located into TCF7L2 gene and presented the highest odd ratio (from 1.42 to 1.57). At least two SNPs were located within KCNJ11, WFS1, ABCC8, JAZF1 and HNF1B genes and one SNP each was identified in ADAMTS9, IGF2BP2, FTO, G6PC2 and GCK genes. Our findings support the role of 11 genes involved in glucose homeostasis in T2D risk development in a large Italian population. We found that such genetic information may be advantageous for predicting T2D.
