Efficacy of remdesivir for hospitalized COVID-19 patients with end stage renal disease

BACKGROUND Since the beginning of corona virus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic,there has been a widespread use of remdesivir in adults and *** is little known information about its outcomes in patients with end stage renal disease who are on *** To assess the clinical outcomes with use of remdesivir in adult patients with end stage kidney failure on *** A retrospective,multicenter study was conducted on patients with end stage renal disease on hemodialysis that were discharged after treatment for COVID-19 between April 1,2020 and December 31,*** endpoints were oxygen requirements,time to mortality and escalation of care needing mechanical *** A total of 45 patients were included in the *** patients received remdesivir,and 25 patients did not receive *** patients were caucasian,females with diabetes mellitus and hypertension being the commonest *** was a trend towards reduced oxygen requirement(beta=-25.93,X^(2)(1)=6.65,P=0.0099,probability of requiring mechanical ventilation(beta=-28.52,X^(2)(1)=22.98,P<0.0001)and mortality(beta=-5.03,X^(2)(1)=7.41,P=0.0065)in patients that received remdesivir compared to the control *** Larger studies are justified to study the effects of remdesivir in this high-risk population with end stage kidney disease on dialysis.

Life Satisfaction among Elderly Households in Public Rental Housing in Singapore

We set out to investigate how satisfied the poor elderly Singaporean households in social housing are with their lives, especially in relation to their housing, in an attempt to find measures to improve, where possible, the life satisfaction of this group of elderly Singaporeans. We use archival and empirical research for our investigation. The results from 403 respondents to our survey are analyzed through logistic regression and factor analysis. We find that the life satisfaction of the elderly residents of social housing is very low. Furthermore we find that home modification that meets the requirements of the respondents will substantially improve their life satisfaction. Given that these elderly households neither have the right nor financial means to modify their housing units and precincts, it is incumbent upon the government, through the relevant authorities such as HDB, Town Councils and BCA to effect the necessary home modifications to create a more elderly-friendly physical environment to improve the life satisfaction of the elderly households in social housing in Singapore. This arguably is a social imperative which should not be subjugated to economic niceties as social housing is not a luxurious housing choice but the last safety net for basic shelter.

N-Credits from Different Maturing Cowpea Varieties to Carrot in Rotation

Legumes constitute a major component of sustainable cropping systems due to their biological nitrogen fixing potential. A field study was conducted in 2020 and 2021 at Ashanti-Mampong in the forest transition zone of Ghana to quantify nitrogen credits to carrot from early (70 - 75 days) and medium maturing (80 - 85 days) cowpea varieties (Asetenapa and Soronko) respectively, and Obatanpa maize variety as a reference crop. The experimental design was a split plot with five Nitrogen levels (0, 30, 45, 60 and 90 N kg/ha) applied to carrot as sub-plots following the legumes and the maize variety as main plots. NPK (15:15:15) was applied at the rate of 250 kg/ha to provide the nitrogen. The sub-plot treatments (0, 30, 45, 60 and 90 N kg/ha) were planted following the two cowpea varieties and the maize variety as a reference crop. Soronko had the highest number of nodules (176) while Asetenapa had the lowest nodules (55). Nitrogen credit to carrot from the early-maturing cowpea (Asetenapa) was 32 N kg/ha in the first year of incorporation and 18 N kg/ha in the second year after incorporation. N-credit from the medium-maturing cowpea (Soronko) was 18 N kg/ha and 29 N kg/ha in the first and second year after incorporation respectively. Obatanpa maize variety with 0 kg N/ha fertilizer level produced the lowest carrot yield, indicating that the soil amendment increased yields. The species and maturity of legumes are important determinants of their N credit contribution to crops in rotation.

Additive Main Effect and Multiplicative Interaction Stability Analysis of Grain Yield Performance in Cowpea Genotypes across Locations

Crops are largely influenced by climatic conditions during the growing season and therefore, minor deviation from optimal conditions can seriously threaten yield. In view of this, knowledge on the effect of environmental factors on crop growth and development could reduce the possibilities of significant yield loss. There have been statistical methods which have been developed in respect to characterizing crops but the additive main effect and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) method integrates analysis of variance and principal components analysis into a unified approach. AMMI has been used in the analysis of G × E interaction with greater precision in many crops. The objective of this study was to assess the extent of genotype x environment interaction and to select the stable cowpea genotypes in Ghanaian environments over seasons using AMMI model. Eight genotypes of cowpea released by Crops Research Institute of Ghana over two decades were selected for evaluation in two locations and two seasons using RCBD with 3 replications in forest and transitional zones of Ghana. When the mean yields of various genotypes were subjected to the AMMI model, the results showed that, a highly significant (P 0.001) genotype by location and by year interaction effects for cowpea grain yield was recorded with 63.1% of the total variation attributable to environmental effects. The AMMI Bi-plot of PC1 and GGE Bi-plot gave 80.8% and 89.3% respectively. Genotype Asontem (G3) had the highest yield and was adapted to all the environments and seasons. Genotypes Asetenapa (G1) and Soronko (G6) were however not stable with consistently low yield across all the environments. It is recommended that farmers in Forest and transitional zones of Ghana should cultivate the highly stable cowpea genotypes in order to get stable yields across environments due to climatic change.

Evaluation of Yield and Yield Components of Some Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp) Genotypes in Forest and Transitional Zones of Ghana

Cowpea adapts very well to environmental conditions that normally affect production of crops such as drought, temperature changes and other environmental stresses. However, apart from these attributes, the growth and development of some cowpea genotypes especially during flowering stage and yield of some cowpea are affected by drought and high temperatures. Two field trials were conducted at two different locations (Mampong and Fumesua) in the 2015 and 2016 growing seasons to evaluate yield stability of eight cowpea varieties (Asontem, Tona, Nhyira, Videza, Asomdwe, Asetenapa, Soronko and Tona) released over two decades ago by CSIR-CRI in the forest and transitional zones of Ghana. The experimental design used was a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The results revealed that Asontem, Tona and Nhyira had high yields in both locations and across seasons. Asontem showed superiority amongst the genotypes across the seasons and locations with Soronko and Asetenapa having the lowest yields. The growth and development of the cowpea genotypes especially during flowering stage and yield were affected by drought and high temperatures, hence Soronko and Asetena had low yields compared to Asontem and other genotypes. It is recommended that, for farmers to get more profit due to unpredictable climatic conditions prevailing in Ghana, it will be profitable to grow early maturing cowpeas such as Asontem that can be stable across different environments in order to get stable yields with good returns.

Deep neural network based classification of rolling element bearings and health degradation through comprehensive vibration signal analysis

The interaction effect of foreign capital inflows and financial development on economic welfare in sub-Saharan Africa

This study examines the interaction effects of foreign capital inflows and financial development on economic welfare in sub-Saharan Africa(SSA).Estimates based on the system-GMM estimator using panel data on 23 SSA countries for 2000 to 2013 establish several ***,the interaction between foreign capital inflows and financial development positively affects economic welfare in ***,this effect was negative after one ***,the partial indirect effects of foreign capital inflows on economic welfare,conditional on the level of financial development,are positive,though they become negative after one ***,the total effect of foreign capital inflows on economic welfare is *** effect becomes negative after a year,though the predominant source of financial development is domestic *** consistency of these results indicates the importance of financial development in transmitting foreign capital to economic welfare *** the SSA’s financial sector to meet specific welfare-enhancing demands may potentially convert a large share of capital inflows into improved economic welfare and eliminate the negative effects.
