Spleen Function and Anxiety in Chinese Medicine: A Western Medicine Perspective

This article aims to illustrate the function of the Spleen in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in the context of modern medicine. TCM has been practiced since ancient times in China for the prevention and/or treatment of diseases. Yet, the complete understanding of its theoretical basis in relation to clinical practice from the modern medicine perspective is still lacking. According to TCM theory, the Spleen, as one of the five Zang (i.e., visceral organs), plays an important role in various physiological functions, including digestion and absorption of nutrients, regulation of water retention and excretion, facilitation of blood perfusion to skeletal muscle and on the optimal functioning of the immune system. Clinical applications of herbal formulations for the treatment of Spleen dysfunction (i.e., Spleen deficiency—a decline in Spleen function) and their pharmacological activities are described. The view point of TCM on how emotions (or Qing Zhi) can influence the body function is introduced. The relationship between anxiety and Spleen function has been analyzed by reviewing relevant research studies in modern medicine. These findings suggest that the cause/consequence relationship between anxiety and Spleen function may be bi-directional.

AIM： To investigate the symptom presentation and quality of life in obese Chinese patients with gastro- esophageal reflux disease （GERD）. MKTHODS： Data from patients diagnosed with GERD according to the Montreal definition, were collected between January 2009 to March 2010. The enrolled patients were assigned to the normal [body mass in- dex （BMI）〈 25 kg/m2], overweight （25-30 kg/m2）, and obese （BMI 〉 30 kg/m2） groups. General demographic data, endoscopic findings, and quality of life of the three groups of patients were analyzed and *** 15 patients were classified in the normal, over- weight, and obese, respectively. There was significantly more erosive esophagitis （73.3% vs 64.3% vs 39.2%, P = 0.002）, hiatal hernia （60% vs 33.9% vs 16.7%, P = 0.001）, and males （73.3% vs 73.2% vs 32.4%, P = 0.001） in the obese cases. The severity and frequency of heartburn, not acid regurgitation, was positively cor- related with BMI, with a significant association in men, but not in women. Obese patients were prone to have low quality of life scores, with obese women having the lowest scores for mental health. CONCLUSION： In patients with GERD, obese men had the most severe endoscopic and clinical presenta- tion. Obese women had the poorest mental health.

AIM:To investigate the prevalence of gallstone dis-ease(GSD) and to evaluate the risk of symptomatic GSD among diabetic ***:The study was conducted by analyzing the National Health Research Institutes(NHRI) dataset of ambulatory care patients,inpatient claims,and the updated registry of beneficiaries from 2000 to 2008.A total of 615 532 diabetic patients without a prior history of hospital treatment or ambulatory care visits for symptomatic GSD were identified in the year ***-and gender-matched control individuals free from both GSD and diabetes from 1997 to 1999 were randomly selected from the NHIR database(n = 614 871).The incidence densities of symptomatic GSD were estimated according to the subjects' diabetic *** distributions of age,gender,occupation,income,and residential area urbanization were compared between diabetic patients and control subjects using Cox proportion hazards *** between the rates of selected comorbidities were also assessed in the two ***:Overall,60 734 diabetic patients and 48 116 control patients developed symptomatic GSD and underwent operations,resulting in cumulative operation rates of 9.87% and 7.83%,*** age and gender distributions of both groups were similar,with a mean age of 60 years and a predominance of *** diabetic group had a significantly higher prevalence of all comorbidities of interest.A higher incidence of symptomatic GSD was observed in females than in males in both *** the control group,females under the age of 64 had a significantly higher incidence of GSD than the corresponding males,but this difference was reduced with increasing *** cumulative incidences of operations for symptomatic GSD in the diabetic and control groups were 13.06 and 9.52 cases per 1000 person-years,*** men exhibited a higher incidence of operations for symptomatic GSD than did their counterparts in the control group(12.35 vs 8.75 cases per 1000 pe

In order to reduce test and repair cost in advanced system-on-chip products,wireless built-in self-repair （BISR） techniques for embedded memories are proposed in this *** redundant memory is divided into spare rows,spare column group blocks,and spare words which are used to replace faulty cells in the main *** on this redundancy architecture,a BISR scheme suitable for built-in implementation is *** to simulation results,our techniques have higher repair rates and lower hardware overhead as compared with previous ***,we integrated the proposed memory with BISR circuitry into the HOY wireless test *** results show that the hardware overhead （including the wireless interface modules） is only 0.39% for a 16 M-bit SRAM.

研究地卷柏(Selaginella prostrata ***)的化学成分及其α-葡萄糖苷酶抑制活性,综合运用硅胶、Sephadex LH-20和半制备HPLC等多种色谱分离技术,从地卷柏全草的95%乙醇提取物中分离得到10个化合物,通过现代波谱学方法鉴定其结构为seprostrataoid A(1)、(3 S,5 R,8 S)-5,8-epoxy-6-megastigmadien-3,9-diol(2)、(-)-黑麦草内酯(3)、(3 S,5 R,6 R,7 E)-3,5,6-三羟基-7-巨豆烯-9-酮(4)、(7 R,8 S)-ceplignan(5)、(2 R,3 S)-二氢-2-(3′,5′-二甲氧基-4′-羟基苯基)-3-羟甲基-7-甲氧基-5-乙酰基苯骈呋喃(6)、5,5′-二甲氧基木香酚A(7)、穗花衫双黄酮(8)、异柳杉双黄酮(9)、扁柏双黄酮(10)。其中,化合物1为新的倍半萜类化合物,化合物2~10为首次从地卷柏中分离得到。α-葡萄糖苷酶抑制活性测试结果显示,化合物7~10具有较好的α-葡萄糖苷酶抑制活性,IC 50值分别为72.14±2.67、42.68±1.54、61.26±4.32、55.43±2.17μmol/L。

In this paper,the resonant spectrum of piezoceramic disk in the frequency range from 1 kHz to 1 MHz is studied by the impedance analysis *** are totally four vibration modes existed in the measured frequency *** first one is fundamental radial vibration mode,and then the others are three radial overtone modes with inharmonic frequency *** the increasing of temperature,the whole resonant spectrum shift to the higher frequency. The variation of fundamental series resonant frequency f with temperature is larger than that variation of fundamental parallel resonant frequency f with *** effective electromechanical coupling factor k decreased with the increasing of *** effect of temperature to the overtones mode is more obvious than that of fundamental mode.

Background: Although the standing long jump (SLJ) is a popular physical fitness assessment, it lacks an updated criterion-reference standard. This study generated the first normative SLJ test data for Chinese aged 8 - 18. Methods: From September 2005 to December 2011, comprehensive physical fitness assessments were conducted on 12,712 school students. The SLJ performances were significantly different between boys and girls (all age groups, p ming in the 10th percentile. The onset of muscle strength for boys found in this study corresponded to the onset age of testosterone maturation of Chinese boys investigated in previous studies. Linear regression found age and BMI predicting SLJ significantly for boys and girls, explaining better SLJ results in older boy and the effect of their heavy body size. Conclusions: This study indicated a muscular strength difference between genders during growth and added supporting evidence to the hormonal influence of muscle growth during puberty.
