Donors for Resistance to Brown Planthopper Nilaparvata lugens(St?l) from Wild Rice Species

Out of 1 989 wild accessions sown in seed boxes for screening, only 1 003 wild accessions with good germination were screened against brown planthopper(BPH), Nilaparvata lugens(St?l) under greenhouse conditions. The collection comprised of accessions from 11 wild species and African cultivated rice. The germplasm was screened for BPH following standard seed box screening technique in the greenhouse. As many as 159 accessions were identified as resistant during the year 2012 based on one year screening. A selected set of BPH resistant accessions were screened again during 2013. Based on the two years screening, seven accessions of O. nivara(AA), one accession of O. officinalis(CC), seven accessions of O. australiensis(EE), five accessions of O. punctata(BB and BBCC) and nine accessions of O. latifolia(CCDD) were confirmed to be resistant to BPH. So far no BPH resistance genes have been identified and designated from O. nivara and O. punctata, hence these may act as new sources of resistance.

Structural and electrical characterization of Bi2VO5.5 / Bi4Ti3O12 bilayer thin films deposited by pulsed laser ablation technique

The pulsed laser ablation technique has been employed to fabricate bilayer thin films con-sisting of layered structure ferroelectric bismuth vanadate (Bi2VO5.5) and bismuth titanate (Bi4Ti3O12) on platinized silicon substrate. The phase formation of these films was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies and the crystallites in these bilayers were randomly oriented as indicated by diffraction pattern consisting of the peaks corresponding to both the materials. The homogeneous distribution of grains (~300 nm) in these films was confirmed by atomic force microscopy. The cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy indicated the thickness of these films to be around 350 nm. The film exhi-bited P-E hysteresis loops with Pr ~ 11 ?C/cm2 and Ec ~ 115 kV/cm at room temperature. The dielectric constant of the bilayer was ~ 225 at 100 kHz which was higher than that of homogeneous Bi2VO5.5 film.

Clinical Analysis on the Effectiveness of Transvaginal Cervical Cerclage in Singleton Pregnancies and Its Predictive Factors

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of transvaginal cervical cerclage in singleton pregnancies with cervical incompetence, determine the predictive factors of success and failure, and then compare elective and emergency cerclage. Study Design: This was a retrospective study of 62 patients who underwent cervical cerclage in The First Hospital of Jilin University, China, between May 2015 and January 2018. Successful group was defined as those who delivered live babies and failure group who experienced abortion or stillbirth. Results: Out of 104 patients, 62 met inclusion criteria. In 62 cases, 47 (75.8%) succeeded and 15 (24.2%) failed. In successful group, 21 (44.7%) women delivered pretermly and 26 (55.3%) termly. No severe complications occurred except cervical laceration (2, 3.23%), premature rupture of membranes (13, 20.97%). In 62 cases, 40 (64.5%) have ≤2 previous second-trimester losses and 22 (35.5%) have >2 previous second-trimester losses. No significant differences were found in neonatal outcomes. Analysis revealed that higher postoperative C-reactive protein and presence of premature rupture of membranes were the strongest predictors of cerclage failure. Among 62 cases, 48 (77.4%) were allocated in elective and 14 (22.6%) in emergency cerclage. Pregnancy prolongation was significantly more (P = 0.014) in elective group with no significant differences in premature rupture of membranes, neonatal outcomes (all P > 0.05) except Apgar score at 5 min (P = 0.042). Conclusion: Achieving 75.8% live births proves that transvaginal cervical cerclage is an effective and safe technique in prolonging the gestational age, improving the obstetric outcomes in singleton pregnancies with cervical incompetence under various cerclage indications. Postoperative C-reactive protein and premature rupture of membranes are the predictive factors related to success or failure. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons （PAHs） in soil retain for a quite long period due to their hydrophobicity and aggregation properties. Biofilm-forming marine bacterial consortium （named as NCPR）, composed of Stenotrophomonas acidaminiphila NCW702, Alcaligenes faecalis NCW402, Pseudomonas mendocina NR802, Pseudornonas aeruginosa N6P6, and Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes NP103, was used for the bioremediation of PAHs in a soil microcosm. Phenanthrene and pyrene were used as reference PAHs. Parameters that can affect PAH degradation, such as chemotaxis, solubility of PAHs in extracellular polymeric substances （EPS）, and catechol 2,3-dioxygenase （C230） activity, were evaluated. P. aeruginosa N6P6 and P. pseudoalcaligenes NP103 showed chemotactic movement towards both the reference PAHs. The solubility of both the PAHs was increased with an increase in EPS concentration （extracted from all the 5 selected isolates）. Significantly （P 〈 0.001） high phenanthrene （70.29%） and pyrene （55.54%） degradation was observed in the bioaugmented soil microcosm. The C230 enzyme activity was significantly （P 〈 0.05） higher in the bioaugmented soil mi- crocosm with phenanthrene added at 173.26 ± 2.06 nmol rain-1 mg-1 protein than with pyrene added at 61.80 ± 2.20 nmol min-1 mg-1 protein. The C230 activity and gas chromatography-mass spectrometer analyses indicated catechol pathway of phenanthrene metabolism. However, the metabolites obtained from the soil microcosm added with pyrene revealed both the catechol and phthalate pathways for pyrene degradation.

Screening tests for blood donations are based upon sensitivity, cost-effectiveness and their suitability for high-throughput testing. Enzyme immunoassay (EIAs) for hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibodies were the initial screening tests introduced. The ”first generation“ antibody EIAs detected seroconversion after unduly long infectious window period. Improved HCV antibody assays still had an infectious window period around 66 d. HCV core antigen EIAs shortened the window period considerably, but high costs did not lead to widespread acceptance. A fourth-generation HCV antigen and antibody assay (combination EIA) is more convenient as two infectious markers of HCV are detected in the same assay. Molecular testing for HCV-RNA utilizing nucleic acid amplification technology (NAT) is the most sensitive assay and shortens the window period to only 4 d. Implementation of NAT in many developed countries around the world has resulted in dramatic reductions in transfusion transmissible HCV and relative risk is now < 1 per million donations. However, HCV serology still continues to be retained as some donations are serology positive but NAT negative. In resource constrained countries HCV screening is highly variable, depending upon infrastructure, trained manpower and financial resource. Rapid tests which do not require instrumentation and are simple to perform are used in many small and remotely located blood centres. The sensitivity as compared to EIAs is less and wherever feasible HCV antibody EIAs are most frequently used screening assays. Efforts have been made to implement combined antigen-antibody assays and even NAT in some of these countries.

Microwave gel combustion synthesis and sinterability of Nd:GGG nanopowders

Neodymium doped gadolinium gallium oxide （Nd：GGG） nanopowders synthesized by microwave gel combustion using alanine as a fuel was reported. Metal nitrates solution with alanine fuel was combusted in microwave to give precursor. The micro-wave precursor powder was calcined at different temperatures from 800 to 1100 ℃. Phase pure Nd：GGG formation took place at 800 to 1100 ℃ as observed by X-ray diffraction （XRD） and Fourier transform infra-red （FTIR） spectroscopy. However particle size in-creased with calcinations temperature from 25 nm at 800 ℃ to 200 nm at 1100 ℃.Nd：GGG nanopowder obtained at different calci-nation temperatures were compacted and sintered at 1550 ℃ for 3 h in air. Most densified ceramic was obtained from Nd：GGG nanopowder calcined at 1100 ℃. Microstructure as observed from scanning electron microscopy （SEM） showed that the most densi-fied ceramic, obtained from nanopowder calcined at a higher calcination temperature, had a more uniform grain-size distribution, fewer pores and greater densification. XRD of sintered sample showed retention of phase purity.

Solution combustion synthesis of single-phase gadolinium gallium oxide （Gd3GasO12, GGG） nanopowders, by a fuel mixture approach using urea and glycine at a low temperature of 500 ℃, was being reported for the first time. Based on the fact that urea and glycine are good fuels for gallium oxide and gadolinium oxide synthesis, the fuel mixture composition was obtained, which could lead to direct phase pure cubic Gd3Ga5O12 formation without any subsequent calcination step. Combustion was carried out in furnace pre-heated at 500 ℃. Thermogravimetric analysis （TGA） of combustion product showed negligible mass loss indicating direct formation of GGG powder. Fourier transform infrared （FTIR） spectrum of combusted product showed peak characteristic of GGG in case of mixed fuel. X-ray diffraction （XRD） confirmed formation of phase pure GGG at 500 ℃ in preheated furnace. Very fine, well dispersed nanometric particles of size range of 50-100 nm were obtained, being uniform and close to spherical morphology as observed by transmission electron microscope （TEM）.

Latitudinal Distribution of Solar Flares and Their Association with Coronal Mass Ejections

Major solar flare events have been utilised to study the latitudinal frequency distribution of solar flares in northern and southern hemispheres for the period of 1986 to 2003. A statistical analysis has been performed to obtain the correlation between Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) and Forbush decrease (Fds) of cosmic ray intensity. Almost the same flares distribution in both hemispheres is found in association with CMEs. In a further analysis, it is noted that a larger number of CME-associated solar flares located in the northern hemisphere are found to be more effective in producing Forbush decreases.
