Individualized home-monitoring of disease activity in adult patients with inflammatory bowel disease can be recommended in clinical practice: A randomized-clinical trial

BACKGROUND The optimal way to home-monitor patients with inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)for disease progression or relapse remains to be *** To determine whether an electronic health(eHealth)screening procedure for disease activity in IBD should be implemented in clinical practice,scheduled every third month(3M)or according to patient own decision,on demand(OD).METHODS Adult IBD patients were consecutively randomized to 1-year open-label eHealth interventions(3M vs OD).Both intervention arms were screening for disease activity,quality of life and fatigue and were measuring medical compliance with the constant care web-application according to the screening interventions OD or *** activity was assessed using home measured fecal calprotectin(FC)and a disease activity *** In total,102 patients were randomized(n=52/503M/OD)at baseline,and 88 patients completed the 1-year study(n=433M;n=45 OD).No difference in the two screening procedures could be found regarding medical compliance(P=0.58),fatigue(P=0.86),quality of life(P=0.17),mean time spent in remission(P>0.32),overall FC relapse rates(P=0.49),FC disease courses(P=0.61),FC time to a severe relapse(P=0.69)and remission(P=0.88)during 1 ***(interquartile range)numbers of FC home-monitoring test-kits used per patient were significantly different,3M:6.0(5.0-8.0)and OD:4.0(2.0-9.0),P=*** The two eHealth screening procedures are equally good in capturing a relapse and bringing about ***,the OD group used fewer FC home testkits per *** screening procedures can be recommended for adult IBD patients in clinical web-practice.

’Emulsion locks’ for the containment of hydrocarbons during surfactant flushing

Reversible double water in oil in water(W/O/W)emulsions were developed to contain subsurface hydrocarbon spills during their remediation using surfactant *** emulsions were prepared by emulsifying CaCl2 solutions in canola oil,and subsequently by emulsifying the W/O emulsions in aqueous sodium alginate *** formation of double emulsions was confirmed with confocal and optical *** double emulsions reversed and gelled when mixed with the surfactants sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS)and cocamidopropyl betaine(CPB).Gels can act as’emulsion locks’to prevent spreading of the hydrocarbon plume from the areas treated with surfactant flushing,as shown in sand column *** rheology was used to quantify the viscoelastic moduli increase(gelation)upon mixing the double emulsion with SDS and *** was more effective than CPB in gelling the double *** and SDS could adsorb at the interface between water and model hydrocarbons(toluene and motor oil),lowering the interfacial tension and rigidifying the interface(as shown with a Langmuir trough).Bottle tests and optical microscopy showed that SDS and CPB produced W/O and O/W emulsions,with either toluene or motor oil and *** emulsification of motor oil and toluene in water with SDS and CPB facilitated their flow through sand columns and their *** recovery from sand columns was quantitated using Gas-Chromatography MassSpectroscopy(GC-MS).The data show that SDS and CPB can be used both for surfactant flushing and to trigger the gelation of’emulsion locks’.Ethanol also gelled the emulsions at100 mL/L.

The International Geological Map of Europe and Adjacent Areas （IGME 5000） is a major European geological GIS project being managed and implemented by the German Geological Survey （Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources, BGR） under the umbrella of the Commission for the Geological Map of the World （CGMW）. It is a collaborative European project that to date involves 48 Geological Surveys and is supported by a network of scientific advisors. The original aims of the project have now been achieved： to develop a Geographic Information System （GIS） containing up-to-date harmonised lithological and geochronological data of Europe, and to print a geological map （Figure 1） of the preQuaternary on-shore and, for the first time at this scale, off-shore areas of Europe （see Asch, 2003, for a full account.）

Using a coculture system, we have studied the local action of Sertoli cells on Leydig cell function. The results show that （ⅰ） both LH and FSH have equal potency to stimulate testosterone biosynthesis by fetal and neonatal testicular cells in an age-dependent manner, the maximum stimulation is observed between D3and D5. （ⅱ） An FSH-dependent factor（s） secreted by Sertoli cells increases the basal and/or LH-stimulated Leydig cell androgen production. （ⅲ） The Sertoli cell-stimulating factor（s） is not a steroid or other small molecule, but a heat-labile peptide.

Uniformity in premating reproductive isolation along an intraspecific cline

Premating reproductive isolation （RI） may reduce gene flow across populations that have differentiated in traits important for mate choice. Examining RI across genetic and phenotypic clines can inform the fundamental evolutionary processes that underlie population and lineage differentiation. We conducted female mate-choice studies across an intraspecific red-eyed treefrog cline in Costa Rica and Panama with 2 specific aims：（1） to characterize RI across the cline and examine the relationship between premating RI and genetic and phenotypic distance and （2） to evaluate our results within a broader evolutionary and taxonomic perspective through examination of other RI studies. We found that female red-eyed treefrogs prefer local males relative to non-local males, indicating that some premating RI has evolved in this system, but that preference strength is not associated with phenotypic or geographic distance. Our analysis of 65 other studies revealed no clear pattern between the strength of RI and geographic distribution （allopatry, parapatry, cline） or phenotypic distance, but revealed extreme variation and overlap in levels of intra- and interspecific levels of RI. This work contributes to a growing body of literature that examines intraspecific RI across a cline to understand the selective processes that shape evolutionary patterns at the earliest stages of divergence.

Vascularization in interconnected 3D printed Ti-6Al-4V foams with hydrogel matrix for biomedical bone replacement implants

Vascularization on newly implanted metal orthopedic implants has remained a challenge in the field of tissue engineering. To address this challenge, in this research,an interconnected foam structure of Ti-6 Al-4 V was microfabricated by electron beam melting(EBM) technique. The foam in question has a density of 1.77 g cm-3 with 60% porosity and a tensile strength of 18 GPa. An extracellular matrix based hydrogel was added as an aqueous matrix to the *** mimetic stress has been closely related to many wound healing biomedical applications as it increases survival and proliferation molecular signals. To that end, increased expression of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α(Hif-1α) and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) in the aqueous hydrogel matrix was achieved by the addition of a hypoxia mimetic deferoxamine mesylate(DFM). In this study, the formation of an endothelial network was achieved in a hydrogel matrix in the presence of the before mentioned 3 D printed metal foam. Cellular viability, fluorescent microscopy and scanning electron microscopy imaging analysis demonstrate that pre-osteoblasts undergo proliferation and also attach efficiently to the foam when exposed to DFM. Human umbilical vascular endothelial cells(HUVECs) were grown in an extracellular matrix-like 3 D hydrogel and a hypoxia-like stress was achieved. This research demonstrates that pre-osteoblast cells undergo cell differentiation and increase the production of hydroxyapatite on exposure to the hypoxia mimetic molecule. This proposed approach encompasses an ideal prototype for a completely living implanted structure for future orthopedic implants.

An introduction to CGI Information in general and digital information in particular, underpins all of the IUGS strategic objectives. CGI is helping to address a growing need to improve the quality and range of both information content and the applications that are used to acquire, analyse, process and disseminate geoscience data. It will do this by the exchange of knowledge and best practice and the support for standards. CGI is a new （strictly speaking, re-activated） Commission, founded by the lUGS in late 2002 following the demise of an earlier information Commission, COGEOINFO. Early tasks for CGI were to establish its objectives, set up its structure and modus operandi, elect its Council and establish a web presence. The new Commission was formally ratified by the IUGS at the IGC in Florence in 2004 and also held its first full Open Meeting there.

3D finite element method （FEM） simulation of groundwater flow during backward erosion piping

Backward erosion piping is an important failure mechanism for cohesive water retaining structures which are founded on a sandy aquifer. At present, the prediction models for safety assessment are often based on 2D assumptions. In this work, a 3D numerical approach of the groundwater flow leading to the erosion mechanism of backward erosion piping is presented and discussed. Comparison of the 2D and 3D numerical results explicitly demonstrates the inherent 3D nature of the piping phenomenon. In addition, the influence of the seepage length is investigated and discussed for both piping initiation and piping progression. The results clearly indicate the superiority of the presented 3D numerical model compared to the established 2D approach. Moreover, the 3D numerical results enable a better understanding of the complex physical mechanism involved in backward erosion piping and thus can lead to a significant improvement in the safety assessment of water retaining structures.

Induced pluripotent stem cells throughout the animal kingdom:Availability and applications

Up until the mid 2000s, the capacity to generate every cell of an organism was exclusive to embryonic stem cells. In 2006, researchers Takahashi and Yamanaka developed an alternative method of generating embryonic-like stem cells from adult cells, which they coined induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). Such iPSCs possess most of the advantages of embryonic stem cells without the ethical stigma associated with derivation of the latter. The possibility of generating “custom-made” pluripotent cells, ideal for patient-specific disease models, alongside their possible applications in regenerative medicine and reproduction, has drawn a lot of attention to the field with numbers of iPSC studies published growing exponentially. IPSCs have now been generated for a wide variety of species, including but not limited to, mouse, human, primate, wild felines, bovines, equines, birds and rodents, some of which still lack well-established embryonic stem cell lines. The paucity of robust characterization of some of these iPSC lines as well as the residual expression of transgenes involved in the reprogramming process still hampers the use of such cells in species preservation or medical research, underscoring the requirement for further investigations. Here, we provide an extensive overview of iPSC generated from a broad range of animal species including their potential applications and limitations.
