Background:The usefulness of C-reactive protein(CRP)as a non-specific marker of inflammation during pregnancy and lactation is unclear in impoverished populations where co-existing infections and vitamin deficiencies are ***:This cross-sectional study in Panama recruited 120 pregnant and 99 lactating Ngäbe-Buglewomen from 14 communities in rural *** history,indoor wood smoke exposure,fieldwork,BMI,vitamins A,B_(12),D,and folic acid,and inflammation markers(CRP,neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio(NLR),plateletcrit and cytokines)were *** regressions explored both associations of CRP with other inflammatory markers and associations of CRP and elevated CRP based on trimester-specific cut-offs with maternal factors,infections and vitamin ***:CRP was higher in pregnancy(51.4±4.7 nmol/L)than lactation(27.8±3.5 nmol/L)and was elevated above trimester specific cut-offs in 21%of pregnant and 30%of lactating *** deficiencies were common(vitamin A 29.6%;vitamin D 68.5%;vitamin B1268%;folic acid 25.5%)and over 50%of women had two or more concurrent deficiencies as well as multiple *** regression models highlighted differences in variables associated with CRP between pregnancy and *** pregnancy,CRP was positively associated with greater indoor wood smoke exposure,caries and hookworm and negatively associated with Ascaris and vaginal Lactobacillus and Bacteroides/gardnerella *** with this,greater wood smoke exposure,caries as well as higher diplococcal infection score increased the odds of trimester-elevated CRP concentrations whereas longer gestational age lowered the likelihood of a trimester-elevated *** lactation,folic acid deficiency was associated with higher CRP whereas parity,number of eosinophils and Mobiluncus score were associated with lower ***,a higher BMI and Trichomonas vaginalis score increased the likelihood of an elevated CRP whereas higher parity and numbe

’Emulsion locks’ for the containment of hydrocarbons during surfactant flushing

Reversible double water in oil in water(W/O/W)emulsions were developed to contain subsurface hydrocarbon spills during their remediation using surfactant *** emulsions were prepared by emulsifying CaCl2 solutions in canola oil,and subsequently by emulsifying the W/O emulsions in aqueous sodium alginate *** formation of double emulsions was confirmed with confocal and optical *** double emulsions reversed and gelled when mixed with the surfactants sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS)and cocamidopropyl betaine(CPB).gels can act as’emulsion locks’to prevent spreading of the hydrocarbon plume from the areas treated with surfactant flushing,as shown in sand column *** rheology was used to quantify the viscoelastic moduli increase(gelation)upon mixing the double emulsion with SDS and *** was more effective than CPB in gelling the double *** and SDS could adsorb at the interface between water and model hydrocarbons(toluene and motor oil),lowering the interfacial tension and rigidifying the interface(as shown with a Langmuir trough).Bottle tests and optical microscopy showed that SDS and CPB produced W/O and O/W emulsions,with either toluene or motor oil and *** emulsification of motor oil and toluene in water with SDS and CPB facilitated their flow through sand columns and their *** recovery from sand columns was quantitated using gas-Chromatography MassSpectroscopy(gC-MS).The data show that SDS and CPB can be used both for surfactant flushing and to trigger the gelation of’emulsion locks’.Ethanol also gelled the emulsions at100 mL/L.

Every day walking consists of frequent voluntary modifications in the gait pattern to negotiate *** spinal cord injury,stepping over an obstacle becomes *** over an obstacle requires sensorimotor transformations in several structures of the brain,including the parietal cortex,premotor cortex,and motor *** information and planning are transformed into motor commands,which are sent from the motor cortex to spinal neuronal circuits to alter limb trajectory,coordinate the limbs,and maintain *** spinal cord injury,bidirectional communication between the brain and spinal cord is disrupted and animals,including humans,fail to voluntarily modify limb trajectory to step over an ***,in this review,we discuss the neuromechanical control of stepping over an obstacle,why it fails after spinal cord injury,and how it recovers to a certain extent.

The International geological Map of Europe and Adjacent Areas （IgME 5000） is a major European geological gIS project being managed and implemented by the german geological Survey （Federal Institute for geosciences and Natural Resources, BgR） under the umbrella of the Commission for the geological Map of the World （CgMW）. It is a collaborative European project that to date involves 48 geological Surveys and is supported by a network of scientific advisors. The original aims of the project have now been achieved： to develop a geographic Information System （gIS） containing up-to-date harmonised lithological and geochronological data of Europe, and to print a geological map （Figure 1） of the preQuaternary on-shore and, for the first time at this scale, off-shore areas of Europe （see Asch, 2003, for a full account.）

Pressure-dependent phase transition of 2D layered silicon telluride(Si2le3)and manganese intercalated silicon telluride

Two-dimensional(2D)layered silicon telluride(SizTes)nanocrystals were compressed to 12 gPa using diamond anvil cell *** measurements show a color change from transparent red to opaque black indicating a semiconductor-to-metal phase *** scattering was used to observe the stiffening of the crystal lattice and subsequent phase behavior.A possible phase transition was *** 9.5±0.5 gPa evidenced by the disappearance of the Atg stretching *** was intercalated with elemental manganese to^1 at.%.Intercalation lowers the pressure of the proposed phase transition to 7.5±1 *** modes show both phonon stiffening and phonon softening,suggesting negative linear *** results provide fundamental insight into the high-pressure optical phonon behavior of silicon telluride and illuminate how a specific electron-donating intercalant can chemically alter pressure-dependent optical phonon behavior.

The effect of inactivation of aldehyde dehydrogenase on pheromone production by a gut bacterium of an invasive bark beetle,Dendroctonus valens

Semiochemical-based management strategies are important for controlling bark beetles,such as invasive Red Turpentine Beetle(Denroctonus valens),the causal agent for mass mortality of pine trees(Pinus spp.)in *** has been previously shown that the pheromone verbenone regulates the attack density of this beetle in a dose-dependent manner and that the gut bacteria of *** are involved in verbenone ***,molecular functional verification of the role of gut bacteria in the pheromone production of *** is still *** better understand the molecular function of gut bacterial verbenone production,we chose a facultative anaerobic gut bacterium(Enterobacter xiangfangensis)of *** based on its strong ability to convert cis-verbenol to verbenone,as shown in our previous study,and investigated its transcriptomics in the presence or absence of cis-verbenol under anaerobic conditions(simulating the anoxic environment in the beetle's gut).Based on this transcriptome analysis,aldehyde dehydrogenase(ALDH1)was identified as a putative key gene responsible for verbenone production and was knocked-down by homologous recombination to obtain a mutant *** *** results show that these mutants had significantly decreased the ability to convert the monoterpene precursor to verbenone compared with the wild-type bacteria,indicating that ALDH1 is primarily responsible for verbenone conversion for this bacterium *** findings provide further mechanistic evidence of bacterially mediated pheromone production by ***,add new perspective for functional studies of gut bacteria in general,and may aid the development of new gene silencing-based pest management strategies.

Using a coculture system, we have studied the local action of Sertoli cells on Leydig cell function. The results show that （ⅰ） both LH and FSH have equal potency to stimulate testosterone biosynthesis by fetal and neonatal testicular cells in an age-dependent manner, the maximum stimulation is observed between D3and D5. （ⅱ） An FSH-dependent factor（s） secreted by Sertoli cells increases the basal and/or LH-stimulated Leydig cell androgen production. （ⅲ） The Sertoli cell-stimulating factor（s） is not a steroid or other small molecule, but a heat-labile peptide.
