Microtexture and Distribution of Minerals in Hydrothermal Barite-Silica Chimney from the Franklin Seamount, SW Pacific: Constraints on Mode of Formation

An extinct hydrothermal barite-silica chimney from the Franklin Seamount of the Woodlark Basin, in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, was investigated for mineral distribution and geochemical composition. Six layers on either side of the orifice of a chimney show significant disparity in color, mineral assemblage and major element composition. Electron microscope（SEM） images reveal that the peripheral wall of the chimney is composed of colloform silica, suggesting that incipient precipitation of silica-saturated hydrothermal fluid initiated the development of the chimney wall. Intermediate layers, between the exterior wall and the inner fluid-orifice, dominate with barite and sulfides. Low Sr-to-Ba ratios（SrO/BaO = 0.015–0.017） indicate restricted fluid-seawater mixing, which causes relatively high-temperature formation of the intermediate layers. Whereas the innermost layer bordering the chimney orifice is characterized by more silica and a higher Sr-to-Ba ratio（SrO/BaO = 0.023）, could have formed due to a paragenetic shift from a high-temperature active phase to a cooler waning stage of formation. A paragenetic shift is also probably responsible for the change in mineral formation mechanism that resulted in the textural variation of barite and colloform silica developed during different growth phases of this barite-silica chimney.

Traffic engineering and topology design considering multilayer configuration have become more important. While multilayer design studies usually discuss the traffic engineering issue or reliability, this paper focuses on network construction cost in studying multilayer topology design. The number of ports for the IP layer and the maximum number of Wavelength Division Multiplexers (WDM) for the optical layer are used as construction cost factors. Given a traffic matrix for the IP layer, 1) the number of ports is minimized to obtain a topology and a traffic matrix for the optical link, and 2) the maximum number of WDMs is minimized to configure the optical layer topology. It is shown that both the IP and Optical path layers have been given economic topologies. We present LP formulations of this scheme and the results of a simulation of the full-mesh traffic of 5 nodes, which shows that both layers are successfully optimized.

We show a conceptual structure for a wave energy converter,which features a direct‐drive linear power generator with REBaCuO high‐temperature superconducting(HTS)bulk field poles and driven by a heaving buoy.A dual translator power generation system of the proposed concept structure is a linear generator in which both the HTS bulks and armature copper coils move in opposite directions simultaneously.A performance analysis of our linear generator was conducted using a finite‐element electromagnetic field analysis *** results of the analysis were compared between the HTS dual translator linear power generator and the HTS single translator linear power *** maximum electromagnetic force and the average output power of the HTS dual translator are around 5%and 11%higher than that of the HTS single *** further present the results of the analysis regarding the influence of reducing the stroke length of the linear generator translator on the output power,where the output power for the HTS dual translator system increased up to a factor of two,in comparison to the HTS single translator counterpart,for the same reduction of stroke length.

Recently,a variety of high energy astrophysical phenomena have been successfully reproduced in laboratory experiments using high power laser *** take part in the experiment of collisionless shocks in collaboration with a group at the Institute of Laser Engineering at Osaka *** transition region of the collisionless shock is usually in a highly non-equilibrium *** order to understand the mechanism of energy dissipation at the collisionless shocks,we need to clarify the relaxation processes occurring *** diagnose such a local plasma,the Thomson scattering（TS）measurement has been widely ***,the TS is defined as an elastic scattering of a low frequency incident electromagnetic wave due to its interaction with free electrons in a *** the TS measurement has been used for a long time to measure the plasma not only in experimental devices but also in space（ionosphere）,detailed theory of the TS in a non-equilibrium plasma has not been well *** this thesis we investigate how a non-equilibrium plasma near the shock transition region is observed by the TS ***,we assume that a plasma just upstream of a shock consists of background electrons,ions,and beam *** beam instability generated in such an unstable local plasma is reproduced by using onedimensional full particle-in-cell（PIC）***,a monochromatic electromagnetic wave,as a proxy of the probe light of the TS measurement,is incident upon the system to reproduce virtual collective *** is shown that the so-called electron feature of collective TS is strongly enhanced in the beam-plasma *** characteristics of the enhanced electron feature is discussed in detail.

To discuss the relationship between the periodicity noise and the aerodynamic noise source of a wind turbine, the characteristics of the actual wind turbine were measured by a wind tunnel;moreover, the flow around the impeller immersed in the uniform flow was solved by numerical simulation. In the observed wind turbine, when the mainstream velocity was 7.4 m/s or more, the power coefficient reached maximum at tip speed ratio 8. When the mainstream velocity increased in the driving condition of the maximum power point, the aerodynamic noise increased due to the periodicity noise in the vicinity of 1000 Hz and the broadband noise in the high-frequency domain. The noise sources were concentrated at the leading edge and trailing edge on the suction surface side. We experimentally indicated that the pressure fluctuation of the leading edge was the source of the periodicity noise.

Argyrodites,Li_(6)PS_(5)X(X=Cl,Br,I),have piqued the interest of researchers by offering promising lithium ionic conductivity for their application in all-solid-state batteries(ASSBs).However,other than Li_(6)PS_(5)Cl(651Cl)and Li_(6)PS_(5)Br(651Br),Li_(6)PS_(5)I(651I)shows poor ionic conductivity(10^(-7)S cm^(-1)at 298 K).Herein,we present Al-doped 651I with I^(-)/S^(2-)site disordering to lower activation energy(Ea)and improve ionic *** formed argyrodite-type solid solutions with a composition of(Li_(6–3x)Al_(x))PS_(5)I in 0≤x≤0.10,and structural analysis revealed that Al^(3+)is located at Li ***,the Al-doped samples contained anion I^(-)/S^(2-)site disorders in the crystal structures and smaller lattice parameters than the non-doped *** spectroscopy measurements indicated that Al-doping reduced the ionic diffusion barrier,Ea,and increased the ionic conductivity to 10^(-5)S cm^(-1);the(Li5.7Al0.1)PS5I had the highest ionic conductivity in the studied system,at 2.6×10^(-5)S cm^(-1).In a lab-scale ASSB,with(Li_(5.7)Al_(0.1))PS_(5)I functioned as a solid electrolyte,demonstrating the characteristics of a pure ionic conductor with negligible electronic *** evaluated ionic conduction is due to decreased Li+content and I^(-)/S^(2-)disorder ***-site cation doping enables an in-depth understanding of the structure and provides an additional approach to designing betterperforming SEs in the argyrodite system.

3D Gray Level Co-Occurrence Matrix Based Classification of Favor Benign and Borderline Types in Follicular Neoplasm Images

The creep deformation behavior and its relationship with the microstructural instability during creep were investigated for a nickel-base Udimet 500 superalloy via the creep testing at 800 and 900C for up to 22,000 hours. All of the creep curves under the different test conditions consist of very shorter transient creep and longer acceleration creep. In the tertiary creep region, the acceleration of creep rate occurs in two stages. Moreover, the microstructural evolutions such as the coarsening of βphase, the precipitation of βphase, grain boundary nature and internal nitridation attack were analyzed.

Since the efficiency of treatment of thyroid disorder depends on the risk of malignancy, indeterminate follicular neoplasm (FN) images should be classified. The diagnosis process has been done by visual interpretation of experienced pathologists. However, it is difficult to separate the favor benign from borderline types. Thus, this paper presents a classification approach based on 3D nuclei model to classify favor benign and borderline types of follicular thyroid adenoma (FTA) in cytological specimens. The proposed method utilized 3D gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and random forest classifier. It was applied to 22 data sets of FN images. Furthermore, the use of 3D GLCM was compared with 2D GLCM to evaluate the classification results. From experimental results, the proposed system achieved 95.45% of the classification. The use of 3D GLCM was better than 2D GLCM according to the accuracy of classification. Consequently, the proposed method probably helps a pathologist as a prescreening tool.
