BACKGROUND The prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)patients remains poor despite advances in treatment modalities and *** is important to identify useful markers for the early detection of HCC in *** antigen(PNA),originally reported in a rat carcinogenesis model,is increased in the tissues and serum of HCC *** To determine the diagnostic value of PNA for discriminating HCC and to characterize PNA-positive *** Patients with hepatitis C virus(HCV)-related hepatic disorders were prospectively enrolled in this study,which included patients with hepatitis,with cirrhosis,and with HCC.A novel enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was developed to measure serum PNA concentrations in *** Serum PNA concentrations were measured in 89 controls and 141 patients with HCV infections(50 hepatitis,44 cirrhosis,and 47 HCC).Compared with control and non-HCC patients,PNA was increased in *** receiver operating characteristic curve analysis,the sensitivity of PNA was similar to the HCC markers des-γ-carboxy-prothrombin(DCP)andα-fetoprotein(AFP),but the specificity of PNA was *** was no correlation between PNA and AFP and a significant but weak correlation between PNA and DCP in HCC ***,the correlations with biochemical markers were completely different for PNA,AFP,and DCP;glutamyl transpeptidase was highly correlated with PNA,but not with AFP or DCP,and was significantly higher in PNA-high patients than in PNA-low patients with HCV-related *** PNA may have the potential to diagnose a novel type of HCC in which glutamyl transpeptidase is positively expressed but AFP or DCP is weakly or negatively expressed.

Japan is a mountainous country comprising several islands,in which mountains occupy 70%of the entire ***,numerous transmission line towers have been constructed in the shallow space of steep mountainous *** such construction,monorails and/or cableways are generally used to transport materials and equipment to the construction site instead of using a construction road,as the former method is more economically ***,with this method,drill rigs or vertical shaft sinking machines cannot be transported to the *** small-diameter vertical shafts of 2.5 or 3.0 m as the foundation for high-voltage transmission line towers in mountainous areas are traditionally constructed manually in *** the past two decades,however,dangerous and poor environmental conditions for workers regarding the manual construction of these small-diameter vertical shafts have become a major ***,owing to the poor environmental conditions of small-diameter vertical shafts to be constructed in the shallow space of steep mountainous areas,a decrease has occurred in the number of young workers entering these ***,the construction of transmission line towers with using the manually traditional small-diameter vertical shafts is becoming difficult in Japan from abovementioned *** development of a new technology to solve the problems is necessary for Japan’s economic *** this knowledge,the authors have developed a new small-diameter vertical shaft construction system,in which workers do not have to enter the vertical shaft during construction,as machines are used *** applicability of the proposed system was confirmed by means of the construction of three actual vertical shafts at two construction sites,as well as in factory and field *** applicability and details of the final proposed system are summarized in this paper.

AIM: To investigate the clinicopathological factors underlying the ethnic differences of Helicobacter pylori gastritis and ***: We analyzed clinicopathological parameters of gastric biopsies having H pylori infection that were randomly selected from different ethnic populations including 147 Americans, 149 Japanese, and 181 ***: Males were predominant in Japanese and Korean populations (77.9 and 67.4% respectively) in comparison with Americans (48.3%) (P＜0.001). H pylori gastritis in Koreans and Japanese was characterized by the predominant antral involvement. In the antrum,neutrophilic infiltration into the proliferative zone of pit, i,*** foveolitis, was more frequent in Koreans (82%) than in Japanese (71%) (P＜0.05) and Americans (61%) (P＜0.001).Interstitial neutrophilic infiltration, intestinal metaplasia and atrophy were also frequent in Koreans and Japanese. In the body, the prevalence of acute foveolitis was not significantly different among the populations while chronic interstitial inflammation and lymphoid follicles were more pronounced in the body of Americans than in the body of others (P＜0.01).CONCLUSION: The male-, and antrum-predominant Hpylori gastritis in Koreans and Japanese is compatible with the pattern of sex and topographical distribution of gastric cancer incidence. Our data suggest that persistent acute foveolitis at the proliferative zone is a crucial step in the gastric carcinogenesis.

AIM:To compare creatinine clearance(Ccr) with estimated glomerular filtration rate(eGFR) in preoperative renal function tests in patients undergoing ***:The records of 197 patients undergoing hepatectomy between August 2006 and August 2008 were studied,and preoperative Ccr,a three-variable equation for eGFR(eGFR3) and a five-variable equation for eGFR(eGFR5) were *** values were defined as Ccr < 50 mL/min,eGFR3 and eGFR5 < 60 mL/min per 1.73 *** maximum increases in the postoperative serum creatinine(post Cr) level and postoperative rate of increase in the serum Cr level(post Cr rate) were ***:There were 37 patients(18.8%) with abnormal Ccr,31(15.7%) with abnormal eGFR3,and 40(20.3%) with abnormal *** there were no significant differences in the post Cr rate between patients with normal and abnormal Ccr,eGFR3 and eGFR5 values,the post Cr level was significantly higher in patients with eGFR3 and eGFR5 abnormality than in normal patients(P < 0.0001).Post Cr level tended to be higher in patients with Ccr abnormality(P = 0.0936 and P = 0.0875,respectively).CONCLUSION:eGFR5 and the simpler eGFR3,rather than Ccr,are recommended as a preoperative renal function test in patients undergoing hepatectomy.

In the bone marrow, B cells and bone-resorbing osteoclasts colocalize and form a specific microenvironment. How B cells functionally influence osteoclasts and bone architecture is poorly understood. Using genetically modified mice and highthroughput analyses, we demonstrate that prolonged HIF-1α signaling in B cells leads to enhanced RANKL production and osteoclast formation. In addition, deletion of HIF-1α in B cells prevents estrogen deficiency-induced bone loss in ***, estrogen controls HIF-1α protein stabilization through HSP70-mediated degradation in bone marrow B *** stabilization of HIF-1α protein in HSP70-deficient bone marrow B cells promotes RANKL production and *** of HSP70 expression by geranylgeranylacetone(GGA) administration alleviates ovariectomy-induced ***, RANKL gene expression has a positive correlation with HIF1 A expression in human B cells. In conclusion, HIF-1αsignaling in B cells is crucial for the control of osteoclastogenesis, and the HSP70/HIF-1α axis may serve as a new therapeutic target for osteoporosis.

Unidirectional Sound Signage for Speech Frequency Range Using Multiple-Loudspeaker Reproduction System

Human safety is the most important issue in disaster management. Speech is a sound signal containing information that is easily and quickly understood by humans. Using speech as sound signage in emergency systems can effectively increase human safety in low or poor visibility conditions such as in smoke-filled situations. However, reflections of sound through walls, floor surfaces, and ceilings will affect clarity of speech. Unfortunately, because of the characteristics of sound reproduction systems, a single loudspeaker propagates sound waves omni-directionally at low frequencies. This paper proposes a simple multiple-loudspeaker system for reproducing sound with uni-directional characteristics. The proposed system consists mainly of a primary loudspeaker for introducing sound in the desired beam, a secondary loudspeaker for reducing gain in the undesired direction, and digital filters. An adaptive finite-impulse-response (FIR) filter is used to produce the controlling sound by implementing a filtered-x least-mean-square algorithm, and a delay filter for adjusting the time alignment of sound propagation between primary and secondary sources at the control point. Several operational conditions for illustrating real situations and reflections were considered in an anechoic chamber. Experimental results show the directivity patterns of the proposed multiple-loudspeaker system for the required conditions. In a low frequency range, the system is able to control unidirectional propagation;there is a sound beam in the desired direction and, conversely, reduction of gain in the undesired direction around the control point.

The Ujaragssuit Nunat layered(UNL)unit in the Itsaq Gneiss Complex,west Greenland,has been consid-ered to contain one of the oldest chromitites on Earth based on~ca.4.1 Ga Hadean whole rock Pt-Os model ages and ca.3.81 Ga zircon U-Pb age of the surrounding *** study obtained zircon from the chromitite within this unit as well as granitoid sheets that intruded into the UNL ***-situ U-Pb-Hf-O isotope measurements were made on the *** from both the chromitite and the intrusive granitoids show concordant U-Pb ages of ca.2.97-2.95 *** contrast,Hf and 0 isotopic anal-yses indicate that zircons in the chromitites have a different origin from those in the intrusive *** from granitoids yielded Th/U ratios higher than 0.2,initial Hf isotope ratios of 0.2805-0.2807(i.e,initial:Hf value of-11 to-5),andδ^(18)O values of mostly 6.0‰-7.0‰,which are typical for felsic igneous rocks in Archean continental *** least altered zircons from a chromitite exhibited initial Hf isotope ratios of 0.28078-0.28084(i.e.,initial:Hf value of-1.1 to-0.4),close the chondritic value at ca.3.0 Ga and the depleted mantle at ca.3.2 *** zircons also haveδ^(18)O values of 4.2‰6.1‰which correspond to typical mantle *** other chromitite zircons yielded Th/U ratios lower than 0.1,and Hf and 0 isotopic compositions ranging between the least altered zircons and the intrusive granitoid *** results indicate that the zircons in the chromitites crystallized before or during the 2.97-2.95 Ga granitoid intrusion and most of the zircons were altered by subsequent ***,the present results suggest that zircons in the chromitites originally had depleted Hf iso-topic compositions at ca.3.2-3.0 *** can be explained by two different models of the evolution of the UNL *** is that if the UNL unit was formed at>3.81 Ga as previously thought,with the zircons in the chromitites subsequently being precipitated by ca.3.2-2.95 G
