The Extension Rate of the Medial Collateral Ligament of the Knee Joint during the Valgus Stress Test: Two Case Reports

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of measuring the length of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) to compare the MCL burden when the knee joint is placed under valgus stress in the open and closed and closed kinetic chain. Two examiners conducted the examination. The MCL length was measured using ultrasonography. Two subjects were measured in unload bearing and load-bearing positions, with and without valgus stress test at the knee joint extension and 30° flexion, under eight different measurement conditions. The MCL of the subject was delineated in the longitudinal direction using an ultrasound system. The attachment points of the medial femoral and tibial condyle of the MCL were identified, and the ligament length was measured. The MCL rate before and after the valgus stress test in the loading and unloading positions was calculated. The MCL length increased by an average of 8.9% when the external stress test was performed in the non-weight bearing and knee extension positions and by an average of 17.0% when external stress was applied in the non-weight bearing and knee flexion positions. The MCL length increased by an average of 12.2% when the external stress test was performed in the load-bearing and knee extension positions and an average of 8.9% when the valgus stress test was applied in load-bearing and knee flexion positions. In conclusion, the effect of valgus stress on the MCL differs between load-bearing and non-load-bearing positions. It is considered that the dynamic stabilization mechanism works in the knee joint flexion position in the load position and works simultaneously as the static stabilization mechanism, which limits the knee joint valgus and reduces the extension rate of MCL. Cloning and analysis of [NiFe]-hydrogenase genes from Arthrospira platensis FACHB341

The complete [ NiFe]-hydrogenase genes were cloned from cyanobacterium, Arthrospira platensis FACHB341, using PCR and in-vitro cloning. The total length is 2078bp, including hoxY 549bp, hoxH 1431bp and the spacer in between 98bp. There is a stem-loop structure, downstream of the hoxY gene, serving as a transcription terminator. The deduced amino acid sequences of HoxY aud HoxH consist of acidic amino acid of 15.8% and 12.0%; alkalitropic amino acid of 11.9% and 15.3%; hydrophobic amino acid of 46.3% and 41.0%, respectively. The similarities of hoxY and hoxH genes in Arthrospira platensis FACHB341 to their homologues in other cyanobacteria were compared respectively. The secondary structures and 3D models of small and large subunits of [ NiFe]-hydrogenase were predicted by using 3D-PSSM.

Medial Longitudinal Arch Pad Influences Landing Control of the Lower Limbs during Single-Leg Jump-Landing

Background: Arch support has the effect of maintaining arch and correcting alignment, and it is broadly used for the prevention of sports impediment and treatment of athletes with lowered MLA and foot problems. The fact that the morphological change of MLA damages balance sense and postural control, it was reported that the insole supporting the arch of MLA improved postural balance. There are several studies regarding the effects of arch support;however, its effects on landing control have not been clarified. Therefore, in our research, we discussed the effect of MLA support for landing control, using lower limb dynamic alignment and the moment during landing as indexes. Methods: This study measured the landing motion to be evaluated was to jump from a platform with a height of 30 cm by taking-off with a single foot, and landing on a single foot on a floor reaction force gauge placed ahead and stay still for three seconds for the subjects were 13 healthy females. A soft 6 mm Boron sheet cut in the size of 9 × 3.5 cm, applied with double-sided tape (MLA pad) was used for arch support (hereafter referred to as “pad”). For the lower limb evaluation, an 8-camera with a three-dimensional behavioral analyzer (CORTEX, NAC product, sampling frequency: 120 Hz) and a floor reaction force gauge (AMTI product, sampling frequency: 1000 Hz) were used. Ten successful jump-landing tests for each limb were used for further analyses using Visual 3D software (Cmotion Inc., Kingston, Canada). Analysis objects were knee joint bending angle and valgus angle during landing;knee joint maximum bending angle;bending knee joint valgus angle, hip joint bending angle, adduction angle, ankle joint plantar flexion angle, varus angle at the time of knee joint maximum bending angle;and each joint moment. Computationally Efficient Large-Eddy Simulation of Periodic Unsteady Flow using Harmonic Balance Method

To improve the efficiency and fidelity of the numerical analysis for cascade flutter, we propose an efficient scale-resolving simulation method dedicated to time-periodic flows by incorporating the harmonic balance approach into the large-eddy simulation. This method combined convergence calculations of the steady-state problem based on the harmonic balance method for periodic components, and the nonlinear time-marching method for turbulent fluctuations. Using the proposed method, deterministic periodic components and stochastic turbulent fluctuations were calculated simultaneously, and the effect of turbulent fluctuations on deterministic periodic components was directly calculated without using turbulence models. In this paper, we explain the algorithm and feature of this simulation technique and present the results of the computation for channel flow excited in the streamwise direction as an analysis example using the proposed method. In order to validate the proposed method, an analysis of sinusoidally pulsating channel flow at the central friction-velocity Reynolds numbers Rer = 180 was conducted, confirming that the amplitude and phase of the mean velocity oscillation computed by the proposed method were in good agreement with those of the conventional LES. The present calculation achieved an order of magnitude improvement in computational efficiency compared to conventional LES.

Water-saving irrigation of paddy field to reduce nutrient runoff

The purpose of this work is to study the effect of a type of water-saving irrigation （WSI） on nutrient runoff of paddy field. The volume of surface drainage was maintained low by WSI. In particular, WSI effectively reduced surface drainage in rain events. Model simulation indicated that net runoff load of total nitrogen （TN） from the paddy field was increased by WSI. Meanwhile, net runoff loads of total phosphorus （TP） and total organic carbon （TOC） from the paddy field was decreased by WSI. Because ponding waters of the study fields were enriched with TP and TOC, WSI reduced runoff of these nutrients by controlling the volume of surface drainage. WSI could be considered an efficient method for reducing runoff loads and could conserve water quality in an agricultural watershed.

Anterolateral rotatory instability in vivo correlates tunnel position after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction using bone-patellar tendon-bone graft

AIM To quantitatively assess rotatory and anterior-posterior instability in vivo after anterior cruciate ligament(ACL) reconstruction using bone-patellar tendon-bone(BTB) autografts, and to clarify the influence of tunnel positions on the knee *** Single-bundle ACL reconstruction with BTB autograft was performed on 50 patients with a mean age of 28 years using the trans-tibial(TT)(n = 20) and trans-portal(TP)(n = 30) techniques. Femoral and tibial tunnel positions were identified from the high-resolution 3 D-CT bone models two weeks after surgery. Anterolateral rotatory translation was examined using a Slocum anterolateral rotatory instability test in open magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) 1.0-1.5 years after surgery, by measuring anterior tibial translation at the medial and lateral compartments on its sagittal images. Anterior-posterior stability was evaluated with a Kneelax3 *** A total of 40 patients(80%) were finally followed up. Femoral tunnel positions were shallower(P < 0.01) and higher(P < 0.001), and tibial tunnel positions were more posterior(P < 0.05) in the TT group compared with the TP group. Anterolateral rotatory translations in reconstructed knees were significantly correlated with the shallow femoral tunnel positions(R = 0.42, P < 0.01), and the rotatory translations were greater in the TT group(3.2 ± 1.6 mm) than in the TP group(2.0 ± 1.8 mm)(P < 0.05). Side-to-side differences of Kneelax3 arthrometer were 1.5 ± 1.3 mm in the TT, and 1.7 ± 1.6 mm in the TP group(N.S.). Lysholm scores, KOOS subscales and reinjury rate showed no difference between the two *** Anterolateral rotatory instability significantly correlated shallow femoral tunnel positions after ACL reconstruction using BTB autografts.
