The Cost of Caring

SOUTH Africa＇s acute incidence of HIV/AI DS is well-known globally. According to the United Nations, about 6.1 million South Africans were living with HIV/ AIDS in 2012. This means that one in every six South Africans is infected and of these, 17.9 percent of indi- viduals between the ages of 15 and 49 - considered to be the most economically productive age group - are infected with HIV/AIDS. According to the World Bank, this high infection rate among the economically active population could, in the most undesirable of scenarios, result in South Africa＇s per-capita income halving by 2100. While still a few decades away, the projected adverse impact of HIV/AIDS on the South African economy has seen government embarking on the largest anti-retroviral treatment （ART） access cam- paign in the world.

The foundations of the ＂Africa rising＂ narrative may have increasingly been tested in recent months. Security concerns, the Ebola crisis in West Africa and conflict in Libya have been some of the stumbling blocks the continent has had to face. These have continuously challenged its ability to respond to events that could derail the past years＇ economic growth. The impact of lower oil prices particularly could be a major shock to the region, especially for oilexporting countries.

Localized delivery of drugs is an emerging field both with regards to drug delivery during disease as well as in tissue *** significant achievements made in the last decades,the efficient delivery of proteins and peptides remains challenging,especially in cases requiring long-term release of proteins after *** localized delivery of nucleic acids(NA)represents an interesting alternative due to higher physicochemical stability of NA,increased efficiency by harnessing cells as bioreactors for the production of required proteins and improved versatility with regards to expression of specific proteins through plasmid DNA or repression of gene products through ***,unlike most proteins and peptides,NA must be delivered to the cytoplasm or nucleus to be efficacious,resulting in significant delivery *** herein describe frequently used non-viral vectors for the delivery of NA including polyplexes,lipoplexes and lipopolyplexes and summarize recent developments in the field of nucleic acid delivery systems for local application based on hydrogels,solid scaffolds and physical delivery *** challenges associated with the different approaches are identified and options to address these challenges are discussed.

We revisit a new type of Voronoi diagram, in which distance is measured from a point to a pair of points. We consider a few more such distance functions, based on geometric primitives, namely, circles and triangles, and analyze the structure and complexity of the nearest- and furthest-neighbor 2-site Voronoi diagrams of a point set in the plane with respect to these distance functions. In addition, we bring to notice that 2-point site Voronoi diagrams can be alternatively interpreted as 1-site Voronoi diagrams of segments, and thus, our results also enhance the knowledge on the latter.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a heterogeneous and aggressive hematologic malignancy that is associated with a high relapse rate and poor prognosis. Despite advances in immunotherapies in solid tumors and other hematologic malignancies, AML has been particularly difficult to treat with immunotherapies, as their efficacy is limited by the ability of leukemic cells to evade T cell recognition. In this review, we discuss the common mechanisms of T cell evasion in AML: (1) increased expression of immune checkpoint molecules;(2) downregulation of antigen presentation molecules;(3) induction of T cell exhaustion;and (4) creation of an immunosuppressive environment through the increased frequency of regulatory T cells. We also review the clinical investigation of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in AML. We discuss the limitations of ICIs, particularly in the context of T cell evasion mechanisms in AML, and we describe emerging strategies to overcome T cell evasion, including combination therapies. Finally, we provide an outlook on the future directions of immunotherapy research in AML, highlighting the need for a more comprehensive understanding of the complex interplay between AML cells and the immune system.

In one-dimensional semiconductors such as conjugated polymers and semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes(s-SWCNTs),injected charge carriers(electrons or holes)can have profound impacts on both electronic conductivity and optical spectra,even at low carrier *** charge-related spectral features is a key fundamental challenge with important technological ***,we employ a systematic suite of experimental and theoretical tools to understand the mid-infrared charge signatures of heavily p-type doped polymer-wrapped *** a broad range of nanotube diameters,we find that hole charge carriers induce strong Fano anti-resonances in mid-infrared transmission spectra that correspond to defect-related(D-band)and in-plane tangential(G-band)Raman-active vibrational modes,along with antiresonances arising from infrared(IR)-active polymer and SWCNT *** employ^(13)C isotope-labeled s-SWCNTs and a removable wrapping polymer to clarify the relative intensities,energies,and sources of all observed *** performed with the“amplitude mode model”are used to quantitatively reproduce Raman spectra and also help to explain the outsized intensity of the D-band anti-resonance,relative to the G-band,observed for both moderately and degenerately doped *** results provide a framework for future studies of ground-and excited-state charge carriers in s-SWCNTs and a variety of low-dimensional materials.

Utilization of biochar in plastic based blends offers a sustainable way to renewable materials as well as value-added use of wood *** investigate the interfacial compatibility and weatherability properties of biochar composites,four types of Wood-Plastic Composites(WPC)were prepared by an extrusion *** mechanical properties,water absorptions,thermal and viscoelastic properties,and rheological behavior of the composites were also *** decolorizing carbon(NA)composite melts showed the higher modulus and viscosity,indicating better melt *** NA composites performed the best in tensile properties(strength of 2&6 MPa and modulus of 3.4 GPa)and had strong interfacial interaction between particles and the *** degree of HDPE crystallinity in the biochar and carbon composites decreased relative to Douglas-fir(DF)composites,while the thermal properties of the composites improved compared with DF *** the water resistance,the DF composites displayed the highest water absorption(3.7%)and thickness swell(2.9%).During accelerated weathering tests,longer exposure time increased the color change and lightness,especially for DF *** and biochar composites resulted in improved *** study opens up a pathway to utilize effectively the renewable biochar as reinforcing filler in WPC in outdoor applications.
