Stem c.lls are c.mmonly c.assified.based.on the d.velopmental stage from whic. they are isolated. although this has been a sourc. of d.bate amongst stem c.ll sc.entists. A c.mmon approac. c.assifies stem c.lls into three d.fferent groupings: Embryonic.Stem c.lls (ESc.), Umbilic.l c.rd.Stem c.lls (Uc.Sc.) and.Ad.lt Stem c.lls (ASc.), whic. inc.ud. stem c.lls from bone marrow (BM), fat tissue (FT), engineered.ind.c.d.pluripotent (IP) and.peripheral blood.(PB). By d.finition stem c.lls are progenitor c.lls c.pable of self-renewal and.d.fferentiation hypothetic.lly “ab infinitum” into more spec.alized.c.lls and.tissue. The main intent of this stud. was to d.termine and.c.arac.erize the d.fferent sub-groups of stem c.lls present within the human PB-Sc. that may represent a valid.opportunity in the field.of c.inic.l regenerative med.c.ne. Stem c.lls in the isolated.mononuc.eated.c.lls were c.arac.erized.using a multid.sc.plinary approac. that was based.on morphology, the expression of stem c.ll markers by flowc.tometry and.fluoresc.nc. analysis, RT-Pc. and.the c.pac.ty to self-renew or proliferate and.d.fferentiate into spec.alized.c.lls. This approac. was used.to id.ntify the expression of hematopoietic. mesenc.ymal, embryonic.and.neural stem c.ll markers. Both isolated.ad.erent and.suspension mononuc.eated.c.lls were able to maintain their stem c.ll properties d.ring in-vitro c.lture by hold.ng their c.pac.ty for proliferation and.d.fferentiation into osteoblast c.lls, respec.ively, when exposed.to the appropriate ind.c.ion med.um.

Opportunistic.bac.eremia in ad.lt HIV-infec.ed.patients is a normal c.-infec.ious c.nd.tion c.used.by Gram-negative bac.lli. Respiratory infec.ions, inc.ud.ng c.ugh, shortness of breath, and.c.est pain and.skin infec.ion with eruptions, pustules and.itc.iness, are c.mmon c.mplaints in the setting of late HIV infec.ion. The variety of infec.ions ranges from mild. self-limited.viral, bac.eremia and.fungal infec.ions to severe, life-threatening d.mand.ng urgent c.re and.hospitalization. Varic.lla pneumonia, for instanc., is the most severe c.mplic.tion of c.ic.enpox in HIV infec.ed.ad.lts, potentially refrac.ory, fulminant respiratory failure c.n ensue. Patients with impaired.immune status and.c.ronic.lung d.sease are at an inc.eased.risk. In the United.States as well as in Vietnam, bac.erial/viral pneumonia and.skin infec.ion are the two most c.mmon HIV-assoc.ated.c.nd.tions. While globally the inc.d.nc. of opportunistic.infec.ion has d.c.eased.sinc. the introd.c.ion of highly ac.ive antiretroviral therapy d.ring the last 3 d.c.d.s, HIV-assoc.ated.d.seases remain a signific.nt sourc. of mortality, thus any manifestation must be taken seriously. This stud. will present the most c.mmon HIV-related.pulmonary and.skin infec.ions and.provid. an overview of the epid.miology, c.arac.eristic.c.inic.l and.c.est rad.ograph find.ngs, d.agnosis, treatment, and.prevention globally as well in Vietnam. Though the extensive efforts of the Vietnamese Government d.ring last d.c.d. c.ntributed.to a valuable d.c.ease, yet epid.mic.in Vietnam still remains high, ranking Vietnam 5th in the South-East region. The sec.nd.part of the stud. foc.ses on a unique and.severe HIV c.se report of a 35-year-old.man, with a rare form of pneumonia c.used.by Ac.tenobac.er spp. c.nc.mitant with a prolonged.and.d.sseminating skin infec.ion. The c.se has been treated.with a c.mbination of c.nventional anti-retroviral med.c.tion and.autologous peripheral blood.stem c.lls, the results showed.that within 5 mon

Bac.ground.and.objec.ives Rec.nt stud.es have shown that abd.minal obesity is an important c.mponent for the d.agnosis of metabolic.synd.ome (MS) and.MS is a high risk fac.or for c.rd.ovasc.lar d.sease and.d.abetes mellitus. The aim of this stud. was to d.velop a new formula for sc.eening and.d.agnosis of MS using the waist c.rc.mferenc. (Wc. and.skin fold.thic.ness at the point A8 (SFA8) on the Erd.eim d.agram. Method. A total of 358 essential hypertensive patients (189 male and.169 female) with a mean age of 59.0±9.7 years were inc.ud.d. 151 healthy people (79 male, 72 female) with a mean age of 57.3±12.1 years (similar to hypertensive patients) who were non-hypertensive and.non-d.abetic.served.as a c.ntrol group. All subjec.s had.no evid.nc. of hepatic. renal, or end.c.ine d.sease as d.termined.by history, physic.l examination and.sc.eening blood.tests. Height, weight, Wc. SFA8, blood.pressure (BP), fasting plasma gluc.se, Hd.-c.olesterol and.triglyc.rid. levels were measured.in all subjec.s. Abd.minal obesity measured.by Wc.using the Asia-Pac.fic.c.iteria (Id.A) was applied.for meeting the MS d.finition. The normal value of SFA8 was measured.in the non- MS group. Relationships between SFA8 and.systolic.BP, d.astolic.BP, fasting plasma gluc.se, Hd.-c.olesterol and.triglyc.rid. levels were c.lc.lated.in the c.ntrol group. A new formula was d.veloped.ac.ord.ng to high SFA8 and.high Wc. Results The normal value of SFA8 in non-MS group was 23.6±7.2 mm in male and.26.5±4.6 mm in female, respec.ively. The value of SFA8 in MS group was 36.7± 7.4 mm in male and.38.9 ± 8.1 mm in female, respec.ively. The value of Wc.in MS group and.non-MS group were 92.5±3.0 c. and.79.4±6. 1 c. in male and.86.3±6.4 c. and.74.7±5.4 c. in female, respec.ively. There was a c.rrelation between SFA8 and.systolic.BP, d.astolic.BP, fasting plasma gluc.se, Hd.-c.olesterol and.triglyc.rid. in c.ntrol group (the c.rrelation c.effic.ents were 0.29, 0.23, 0.25, -0.31 and.0.46, respec.ively, P < 0.01)
