Development of a modular, biocompatible thiolated gelatin microparticle platform for drug delivery and tissue engineering applications

The field of biomaterials has advanced significantly in the past *** the growing need for high-throughput manufacturing and screening,the need for modular materials that enable streamlined fabrication and analysis of tissue engineering and drug delivery schema has *** are a powerful platform that have demonstrated promise in enabling these technologies without the need to modify a bulk *** building block paradigm of using microparticles within larger scaffolds to control cell ratios,growth factors and drug release holds *** microparticles(GMPs)are a well-established platform for cell,drug and growth factor *** of the challenges in using GMPs though is the limited ability to modify the gelatin *** the present work,we hypothesized that by thiolating gelatin before microparticle formation,a versatile platform would be created that preserves the cytocompatibility of gelatin,while enabling post-fabrication *** thiols were not found to significantly impact the physicochemical properties of the ***,the thiolated GMPs were demonstrated to be a biocompatible and robust platform for mesenchymal stem cell ***,the thiolated particles were able to be covalently modified with a maleimide-bearing fluorescent dye and a peptide,demonstrating their promise as a modular platform for tissue engineering and drug delivery applications.

Precise taxonomy and the chronostratigraphic calibration of the Middle Eocene Alveolina from Central Iran is here undertaken from the Chah-Talkh section of the southern Sabzevar region(Central Iran). We have identified Alveolina kieli, Alveolina stercusmuris and Alveolina nuttalli along with the new species Alveolina ozcani n. sp. that we include into the Alveolina elliptica group. We have also found Nummulites uroniensis, Nummulites obesus and Nummulites cf. verneuili and associated calcareous nannofossils that look reliable to make thoughtful correlations with the Shallow Benthic Zones(SBZ). The foraminiferal biostratigraphy suggests an assignment to the upper part of the lower Lutetian-lower part of the middle Lutetian,SBZ13(Middle Eocene), further strengthened through the identification of the calcareous nannofossil NP14b-NP15b or CNE8-CNE10 biozones, providing a solid correlation with the global stratigraphic standards.

Intra-tumor heterogeneity is now arguably one of the most-studied topics in tumor biology,as it represents a major obstacle to effective cancer *** tumor cells are highly diverse at genetic,epigenetic,and phenotypic levels,intra-tumor heterogeneity can be assumed as an important contributing factor to the nullification of chemotherapeutic effects,and recurrence of the *** on the role of heterogeneous subpopulations of cancer cells with varying cell-cycle dynamics and behavior during cancer progression and treatment;herein,we aim to establish a comprehensive definition for adaptation of neoplastic cells against *** discuss two parallel and yet distinct subpopulations of tumor cells that play pivotal roles in reducing the effects of chemotherapy:"resistant"and"tolerant"***,this review also highlights the impact of the quiescent phase of the cell cycle as a survival mechanism for cancer *** understanding the mechanisms under-lying the quiescence,it provides an insightful perspective on cancer stem cells(CsCs)and their dual and intertwined functions based on their cell cycle state in response to ***-over,CSCs,epithelial-mesenchymal transformed cells,circulating tumor cells(CTCs),and disseminated tumor cells(DTCs),which are mostly in a quiescent state of the cell cycle are proved to have multiple biological links and can be implicated in our viewpoint of cell cycle heterogeneity in ***,increasing our knowledge of cell cycle heterogeneity is a key to identifying new therapeutic solutions,and this emerging concept may provide us with new opportunities to prevent the dreadful cancer recurrence.

One of the leading causes of cancer-related death is gastrointestinal cancer,which has a significant morbidity and mortality *** preoperative risk assessment is essential for directing patient care,its biological behavior cannot be accurately predicted by conventional imaging *** pathophysiological information in anatomical imaging that cannot be visually identified can now be converted into high-dimensional quantitative image features thanks to the developing discipline of molecular *** order to enable molecular tissue profile in vivo,molecular imaging has most recently been utilized to phenotype the expression of single receptors and targets of biological *** is expected that molecular imaging will become increasingly important in the near future,driven by the expanding range of biological therapies for *** this live molecular fingerprinting,molecular imaging can be utilized to drive expression-tailored customized *** technical aspects of molecular imaging are first briefly discussed in this review,followed by an examination of the most recent research on the diagnosis,prognosis,and potential future clinical methods of molecular imaging for GI tract malignancies.

Objective:To evaluate the in vitro and in vivo efficacy of quercetin and its immunomodulatory and anti-oxidative activity against Leishmania major(***).Methods:*** promastigotes and amastigotes were incubated with different concentrations of quercetin to estimate EC_(50).For in vivo study,the base of tails of mice was infected with *** developing ulcers in the inoculation site,mice were treated with 50 mg/kg quercetin orally for 28 consecutive *** wound-healing potential of quercetin was evaluated by histopathological analysis of tissue sections stained by hematoxylin and eosin as well as Masson's *** addition,the levels of tumor necrosis factor-α,interleukin-6,malondialdehyde,and adiponectin,the ferric reducing ability of plasma,as well as superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities were ***:The EC_(50)values of quercetin against *** promastigotes and intracellular amastigotes were 0.27 and 0.85μM,*** analysis showed that fewer inflammatory cells,more fibroblasts,and more collagen deposition were observed in tissue sections of quercetin-treated *** addition,treatment with quercetin markedly increased glutathione peroxidase activity,the ferric reducing ability of plasma and adiponectin levels while decreasing malondialdehyde,interleukin-6,and tumor necrosis factor-α***:Quercetin shows anti-leishmanial activity,immunomodulatory,anti-oxidative,and anti-inflammatory ***,it may be further explored as an effective drug in treating leishmaniasis.

Force application of laparoscopic surgeons under the impact of heavy personal protective equipment during COVID-19 pandemic

Objective:Surgeons are required to wear heavy personal protective equipment while delivering care to patients during the COVID-19 *** examined the impact of wearing double gloves on surgeons’performance in laparoscopic ***:Eleven surgeons-in-training at the Surgical Simulation Research Lab of the University of Alberta were recruited to perform laparoscopic cutting tasks in simulation while wearing none,one pair,and two pairs of surgical *** applied to laparoscopic instruments were ***:Wearing gloves prolonged task times(one pair of gloves:301.6±61.7 s;two pairs of gloves:295.8±65.3 s)compared with no gloves(241.7±46.9 s;p=0.043).Wearing double gloves increased cutting errors(20.4±5.1 mm^(2))compared with wearing one pair of gloves(16.9±5.5 mm^(2))and no gloves(14.4±4.6 mm^(2);p=0.030).Wearing gloves reduced the peak force(one pair of gloves:2.4±0.7 N;two pairs of gloves:2.7±0.6 N;no gloves:3.4±1.4 N;p=0.049),and the total force(one pair of gloves:10.1±2.8 N;two pairs of gloves:10.3±2.6 N;no glove:12.6±1.9 N;p=0.048)delivered onto lapa-roscopic scissors compared with wearing no ***:The combined effects of wearing heavy gloves and using tools reduced the touching sensation,which limited the surgeons’confidence in performing surgical *** practice in simulation is suggested to allow surgeons to overcome difficulties brought by personal protective equipment.

Effective treatment of cancer requires understanding the nature of the disease and accurately addressing the main root *** risk factors for cancer include poor nutrition,an acidogenic diet,an unhealthy lifestyle,and exposure to carcinogens such as toxins,chemicals,and *** risk of developing cancers may be reduced by sufficient oxygenation and maintaining optimal alkalinity and nutritional balance at the cell *** review paper summarizes some diet and lifestyle modifications that may potentially be considered for preventing and controlling some ***,worldwide statistical data for cancer incidence rates published by International Agency for Research on Cancer are analyzed for certain cancers regionally,concerning the effect of dietary habits and environmental factors that meaningfully correlate with the global trends of *** study of cancer root causes integrated with analyzing the statistics related to cancer incidence rates suggests that the risk of developing cancer may be reduced by modifying dietary habits and lifestyle factors,as well as reducing exposure to *** with healthy balanced dietary habits may have a lower cancer risk than those who frequently have unhealthy diets;hence,considering a balanced natural diet and healthy lifestyle may be suggested as a complementary or alternative solution in cancer treatments.

The Late Devonian-early Carboniferous deposits of the Anarak section in northeastern Isfahan,Central Iran,evaluated based on conodont biostratigraphy,sedimentary environment and sequence *** to the field observations,five lithological units were *** the conodont fauna of the Late Devonian-Carboniferous(Mississippian-Pennsylvanian)deposits of Bahram,Shishtu,and Qaleh(Sardar 1)formations in Anarak section led to the identification of 67 species of 18 conodont genera,and accordingly 22 conodont biozones were *** correlation of sea-level change curves,regarding to the conodont biofacies with the global sea-level curve,demonstrates the relative correlation in the mentioned times due to the shallow condition of the central Iran basin compared to the European and American *** microfacies analysis led to the identification of 12 microfacies related to the open sea,bioclastic barrier,lagoon and tidal flat sub-sedimentary environments in a homoclinal carbonate ramp *** on sequence stratigraphy studies,three 3rd order sequences were *** first sequence,which is of the Late Devonian(upper part of the Bahram Formation,32.5 m),the second sequence(12.5 m)is the Late Devonian(uppermost part of the Bahram Formation),and the third sequence(68 m)is the early Carboniferous(the Shishtu I Formation).
