Hexavalent Chromium Removal and Reduction to Cr (III) by Polystyrene Tris(2-aminoethyl)amine

A commercially available chelating polymer, polystyrene tris(2-aminoethyl)amine, was used for the removal of chromium from aqueous solution. The influence of pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage and initial Cr (VI) concentration on adsorption was studied. The optimum pH for the removal of Cr (VI) was at pH 5, while optimum contact time and adsorbent dosage were 120 minutes and 10 g/L, respectively. Total chromium and Cr (VI) concentrations were analyzed by ICP-MS and UV-Visible. Adsorption isotherms using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models revealed that the data fitted Langmuir isotherm model better than Freundlich with a maximum adsorption capacity of 312.27 mg/g. FTIR spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectrometry (EDS) analyses were performed on the adsorbent before and after binding Cr (VI). All analyses confirmed the complexation of Cr (VI) to the adsorbent. Desorption experiments using KCl solution indicated 89.3% release of chromium, rendering this method of high potential for adsorbent regeneration.

Survival of encapsulated probiotics through spray drying and non-refrigerated storage for animal feeds application

The objective of this study is to verify potential of various types of microorganisms during spray drying and non-refrigerated storage that can be enhanced substantially by selecting suitable protective colloids. Four selected probiotics tested are Lactbacillus plantarum B13 and B18, which are the bacteria probiotics and Kluyveromyces lactis and Saccharomyces blouradii, non-bacteria probiotics. Two levels of experiment occur starting with formulation study of encapsulation agent followed by the viability study of different probiotics after spray dry and two weeks nonrefrigerated storage. The formulation of 30% of gum Arabic, 15% of gelatin and 45% of coconut oil can homogenize well at least for two hours and can produce acceptable dried product (below 4% of moisture content) at low outlet temperature (70℃ -75℃). K. lactis, S. blouradii gives 2.57% and 2.4% of viability percentage after spray drying process and 25.84% and 2.04% after two weeks nonrefrigerated storage respectively. The colonies of non-probiotics bacteria after both conditions are between 1010 and 106 cfu/mL which is among the accepted level for industrial application. However, the survival of probiotics in a spray-dried form during non-refrigerated storage is higher at low of moisture content compared to others.

Assessment of the Off-season Rainfall of January to February 2020 and Its Socio Economic Implications in Tanzania: A Case Study of the Northern Coast of Tanzania

This article examines the off season rainfall in northern coast Tanzania(NCT)including Zanzibar which occurred in January and February 2020(JF).Like the JF rainfalls of 2001,2004,2010,2016 and 2018,the JF(2020)rainfall was more unique in damages including loss of lives,properties and *** study used the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data to examine the cause of uniqueness of JF rainfall in 2001,2004,2010,2016,2018 and 2020 over NCT and *** datasets include monthly mean u,v wind at 850,700,500,and 200 mb;SSTs,mean sea level pressure(MSLP)anomalies,Dipole Mode Index(DMI),and monthly rainfall from NCT and Zanzibar *** were processed and calculated into long term,seasonal,and monthly averages,indeed,Precipitation Index(PI)was *** analysis between the rainfall(December to January),SST,DMI and 850 mb wind vectors;and long-term percentage contribution of investigated parameters was *** revealed significant positive and negative correlations between JF rainfall,SSTs and ***,JFs of 2004 and 2016 had higher rainfalls of 443 mm with percentage contribution of up to 406%,while January and February,2020 had the highest of 269.1 and 101.1mm in Zanzibar and 295 and 146.1 mm over and NCT areas,with highest January long-term rainfall contribution of 356%in Zanzibar and 526%over *** DJF(2019/20)had the highest rainfall record of 649.5 mm in Zanzibar contributing up to 286%,while JF 2000 rainfall had a good spatial and temporal distribution over most NCT ***,2020 rainfall had impacts of more than 20 people died in Lindi and several infrastructures including Kiyegeya Bridge in Morogoro were ***,more research works on understanding the dynamics of wet and dry JF seasons should be conducted.

Complexing Properties of Acid Alizarin Violet with Copper, Cobalt and Nickel in Micellar Media Containing SDS, CTAB and TX-100

The interaction of the dye acid alizarin violet (AVN) with three transition metals was followed spectrophotometrically in water and in micellar solutions of the cationic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), the anionic sodium dode- cyl sulfate (SDS) and the nonionic triton X-100 (TX-100). The stoichiometric ratios for the complexes of AVN with each metal ion were determined by the mole ratio and the continuous variation methods. In water, the metal to dye ratios in the complexes were 1:2, 1:3 and 1:1 for Cu2+, Co2+ and Ni2+, respectively. For Ni2+ the ratio changed to 1:3 in micellar CTAB. All other ratios were unchanged in the three micellar solutions. The formation constant (βn) of the complex in water was 1.00 × 1010 for Cu2+, 4.66 × 1014 for Co2+ and 9.03 × 104 for Ni2+. βn decreased in micellar TX-100: for Cu2+ to 6.88 × 108, for Co2+ to 1.56 × 1014 and for Ni2+ to 8.65 × 104. By contrast, micellar CTAB increased βn for Cu2+ and Ni2+. For Cu2+, the increase was to 5.19 × 1010, but for Ni2+ a large jump was observed, to 1.16 × 1015. For Co2+, βn dropped to 2.16 × 1014 in CTAB. Micellar SDS decreased βn for Cu2+ and Co2+ complexes to 5.38 × 109 and 1.76 × 1014, respectively, but increased that of the Ni2+ complex to 4.40 × 105. These observations were explained in terms of structural properties.

The Inhibitory Effect of Curcumin on Ornithine Decarboxylase against Hepatic Carcinoma

Curcumin the active component of turmeric is widely used as an anticancer agent for treating many human cancers. This study aimed at the extraction of curcumin from Curcuma Longa and investigates its therapeutic effect as ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) inhibitor in HepG2 cells. The proliferation of HepG2 cells was carried out by using the MTT assay. In addition, cell cycle analysis was evaluated by using the flow-cytometric technique. Our results showed that curcumin has the ability to inhibit the proliferation of HepG2 cells with IC50 of 24.79 μg/ml and induced G2/M cell cycle arrest. Moreover, it caused an elevation in the intracellular concentration of Ca2+. Moreover, in the curcumin administration the downregulation expression level of ODC and Bcl-2 genes (p ≤ 0.05) was significant found. On the other hand, upregulation in the expression level of P53, Bax, and caspase-3 genes (p ≤ 0.05). This study concluded that curcumin may be considered as a new saving candidate for the future progress of antitumor agents.

Concurrent Removal and Reduction of Cr(VI) by Wool: Short and Long Term Equilibration Studies

Hexavalent chromium removal from wastewater using sheep wool was investigated at several equilibration periods. The influence of contact time, pH, adsorbent dosage and initial concentration was investigated. Adsorption isotherms for long and short periods were fitted to the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. For short contact times, the Langmuir adsorption isotherm was obeyed with no detectable change in the oxidation state but removal percentages did not exceed 90%. Long contact times resulted in more than 99% removal of Cr(VI). A 2-step mechanism for the removal is proposed. Free wool and wool loaded with Cr(VI) were characterized by FTIR and SEM.

The Social Media and Technology Addiction and Its Associated Factors among University Students in Lebanon Using the Media and Technology Usage and Attitudes Scale (MTUAS)

The contemporary developments of Information and Communication Technologies usage have fueled a popular concern. The young people are experiencing technology addiction behavior due to excessive media and technology usage. A valid instrument is required to detect individuals at high risk of social media and technology addiction. Objective: The objectives of this study are to assess prevalence of the technology addiction using the Media and Technology Usage and Attitudes Scale (MTUAS) and to investigate the impacts of online social networking on health and academic performance of young university students in Lebanon. Methods: During the academic year 2017-2018, a cross-sectional study which enrolled 705 young university students was conducted. Data was collected using MTUAS questionnaire. The translation and cultural adaptation of the MTUAS followed a standardized protocol. The psychometric properties were then evaluated. We used multivariate regression analyses to determine which characteristics were associated with the technology addiction among students. Results: 705 filled out the questionnaire aged 17 to 35 years (mean = 20.42;SD = 2.41), 74% of whom were females. The internal consistency was high for all subscales and ranged from 0.54 - 0.87. The MTUAS yielded statistically significant scores for subgroups (known group validity). Males’ students had a higher risk of addiction to social media and technology than females. The use of media was viewed common among the smokers (OR = 1.76;95% CI = 1.10 - 2.82, p = 0.02) and drinkers of alcohol (OR = 1.80;95% CI = 1.04 - 3.11, p = 0.04). Students that used e-mailing, smartphone, and TV viewing had a high academic performance level. Females and public university students had negative attitudes toward technology. Efficiency of Advanced Membrane Wastewater Treatment Plant towards Removal of Aspirin, Salicylic Acid, Paracetamol and p-Aminophenol

The efficiency of membrane separation technology for wastewater treatment was employed to check its efficiency in removing pharmaceuticals, their degradation products and their metabolites from wastewater. Aspirin and paracetamol were found to degrade in wastewater furnishing salicylic acid and p-aminophenol, respectively. The kinetics for the degradation reactions of both drugs were investigated in wastewater environment and both have shown first order kinetics with rate constants 0.845 × 10^-8 Ms^-1 and 1.0 × 10^-8 Ms^-1 at room temperature, respectively. These values are an order of magnitude larger than those obtained in pure water under the same conditions. The over all performance of the plant has shown complete removal of these compounds from spiked wastewater within the detection limit of the analytical method. The most effective components for removing those drugs within the plant were activated carbon and clay micelle filters. The adsorption isotherms for these compounds have been studied using both activated carbon and newly developed adsober named clay-micelle complex. All studied isotherms were found to fit Langmuir isotherm. The Langmuir constant and the adsorption capacity were evaluated and discussed.
