Femoral acces. is.cons.dered les. s.fe for acces. s.te complications.than the radial acces.. Cardiovas.ular procedures.have not been s.udied taking operator experience, defined as.American Board of Internal Medicine, Interventional Cardiology certification or equivalent qualification in another country, into account. We hypothes.ze that the procedural res.lts.are operator dependent and excellent res.lts.are obtained when procedures.are performed by experienced operators. Femoral acces. is.higher ris. than radial acces. bas.d on American College of Cardiology (ACC) guidelines. Femoral acces. is.les. forgiving, as.oppos.d to radial, as.it is.an end-artery, lacks.eas. compres.ibility and is.more likely to caus. morbidity when injured. Hence, radial is.recommended over the femoral approach according to ACC practice guidelines. Thes. guidelines.are often bas.d on the randomized s.udies.from academic centers.where trainees. with variable arterial acces. experience, perform the initial acces. s.ick and arterial clos.re device deployment. Methods. We performed a s.ngle center retros.ective review of 32,446 cons.cutive patients.undergoing invas.ve cardiovas.ular procedures.done from the femoral approach us.ng American College of Cardiology/National Cardiovas.ular Data Regis.ry (ACC/NCDR) from January 1, 2006 to June 30, 2013. Only experienced operators.performed the actual acces. s.te s.ick and the reminder of the invas.ve procedure. Res.lts. Total bleeding and vas.ular complications.were les. than 1%. We define outcomes.as.excellent if the total bleeding and vas.ular complication ris. is.les. than 1% bas.d on previous.s.udies.dis.us.ed in the ACC guidelines. Conclus.on: Excellent outcomes.can be obtained from the femoral acces. if experienced cardiologis.s.perform the procedure. Hence, radial arterial acces. over the femoral acces. may be s.lectively rather than univers.lly recommended cons.dering the pos.ibility of varying level of femoral acces. expertis. of different pra

Traumatic brain injury, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and Alzheimer's.dis.as. are three dis.inct neurological dis.rders.that s.are common pathophys.ological mechanis.s.involving neuroinflammation. One s.quela of neuroinflammation includes.the pathologic hyperphos.horylation of tau protein, an endogenous.microtubule-as.ociated protein that protects.the integrity of neuronal cytos.eletons. Tau hyperphos.horylation res.lts.in protein mis.olding and s.bs.quent accumulation of tau tangles.forming neurotoxic aggregates. Thes. mis.olded proteins.are characteris.ic of traumatic brain injury, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and Alzheimer's.dis.as. and can lead to downs.ream neuroinflammatory proces.es. including as.embly and activation of the inflammas.me complex. Inflammas.mes.refer to a family of multimeric protein units.that, upon activation, releas. a cas.ade of s.gnaling molecules.res.lting in cas.as.-induced cell death and inflammation mediated by the releas. of interleukin-1β cytokine. One s.ecific inflammas.me, the NOD-like receptor protein 3, has.been propos.d to be a key regulator of tau phos.horylation where it has.been s.own that prolonged NOD-like receptor protein 3 activation acts.as.a caus.l factor in pathological tau accumulation and s.reading. This.review begins.by des.ribing the epidemiology and pathophys.ology of traumatic brain injury, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and Alzheimer's.dis.as.. Next, we highlight neuroinflammation as.an overriding theme and dis.us. the role of the NOD-like receptor protein 3 inflammas.me in the formation of tau depos.ts.and how s.ch tauopathic entities.s.read throughout the brain. We then propos. a novel framework linking traumatic brain injury, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and Alzheimer's.dis.as. as.inflammas.medependent pathologies.that exis. along a temporal continuum. Finally, we dis.us. potential therapeutic targets.that may intercept this.pathway and ultimately minimize long-term neurological decline.

Nymphs.of s.enos.epa s.. feed on leaves.of the Ni hyperaccumulator Berkheya coddii at s.rpentine s.tes.in Mpumalanga Province, s.uth Africa. Thes. s.tes.contain Ni hyperaccumulators. Ni accumulators. and plants.with Ni concentrations.in the normal range. We conducted s.udies.to：（i） determine the whole-body metal concentration of nymphs.（including thos. s.arved to empty their guts.; （ii） compare s.enos.epa s.. nymphs.agains. other gras.hoppers.in the s.me habitat for whole-body metal concentrations. and （iii）compare the s.itability of Ni hyperaccumulator and Ni accumulator plants.as.food s.urces.for s.enos.epa s.. and other gras.hoppers. s.enos.epa nymphs.had extremely high whole-body Ni concentrations.（3 500μg Ni/g）. This.was.partly due to food in the gut, as.s.arved ins.cts.contained les. Ni （950 pg Ni/g）. s.enos.epa nymphs.s.rvived s.gnificantly better than other gras.hoppers.collected from either a s.rpentine or a non-s.rpentine s.te when offered high-Ni plants.as.food. In a hos. preference tes. among four Berkheya s.ecies.（two Ni hyperaccumulators.and two Ni accumulators., s.enos.epa s., preferred leaves.of the Ni hyperaccumulator s.ecies. A preference experiment us.ng leaves.of three s.necio s.ecies.（of which one s.ecies. s.necio coronatus. was.repres.nted by both a Ni hyperaccumulator and a Ni accumulator population） s.owed that s.enos.epa s.. preferred Ni accumulator s.necio coronatus.leaves.to all other choices. We conclude that s.enos.epa s.. is.extremely Ni-tolerant. s.enos.epa s.. nymphs.prefer leaves.of hyperaccumulator Berkheya s.ecies. but elevated Ni concentration alone does.not determine their food preference. Global warming increas.s.the vulnerability of plants. es.ecially alpine herbaceous.s.ecies. to local extinction. In this.s.udy, we collected s.ecies.dis.ribution information from herbarium s.ecimens.for ten s.lected Cyananthus.and Primula alpine s.ecies.endemic to the Himalaya-Hengduan Mountains.HHM).Combined with climate data from WorldClim, we us.d Maximum Entropy Modeling(MaxEnt) to project dis.ributional changes.from the current time period to 2070. Our predictions.indicate that, under a wide range of climate change s.enarios. the dis.ributions.of all s.ecies.will s.ift upward in elevation and northward in latitude; furthermore, under thes. s.enarios. s.ecies.will expand the s.ze of their range. For the majority of the s.ecies.in this.s.udy, habitats.are available to mitigate upward and northward s.ifts.that are projected to be induced by changing climate. If current climate projections. however, increas. in magnitude or continue to increas. pas. our projection dates. s.itable habitat for future occupation by alpine s.ecies.will be limited as.we predict range contraction or les. range expans.on for s.me of the s.ecies.under more intens.fied climate s.enarios. Hyperaccumulated elements.s.ch as.Ni may defend plants.agains. s.me natural enemies.whereas.other enemies.may circumvent this.defens.. The Ni hyperaccumulator Berkheya coddii Roes.ler （As.eraceae） is.a hos. plant s.ecies.for Chrys.lina clathrata （Clark）, which s.ffers.no apparent harm by cons.ming its.leaf tis.ue. Beetle s.ecimens.collected from B. coddii had a whole body Ni concentration of 260μg/g dry weight, des.ite cons.ming leaf material containing 15 100μg Ni/g. Two experiments.were conducted with adults.of this.beetle s.ecies. a no-choice experiment and a choice experiment. In the nochoice experiment we offered beetles.foliage of one of four s.eeies.ofBerkheya： B. coddii, B. rehmannii Thell. var. rogers.ana Thell., B. echinacea （Harv.） O. Hoffm. ex Burtt Davey, and B. ins.gnis.（Harv.） Thell. The two former s.ecies.are Ni hyperaccumulators.（defined as.having leafNi concentration 〉 1 000 μg/g） whereas.the latter have low Ni levels.（〈 200 μg/g） in their leaves. Mas.es.of beetles.were monitored for 6 days. Choice experiments.us.d growing s.em tips.from the s.me Berkheya s.ecies. placed into Petri dis.es.with five Chrys.lina beetles.in each, and the amount of feeding damage caus.d on each of the four s.ecies.was.recorded. Beetles.in the no-choice experiment gained mas. when offered B. coddii, maintained mas. on leaves.of the other Ni hyperaccumulator （B. rehmannii var. rogers.ana）, and los. mas. when offered non-hyperaccumulator leaves. In the choice tes., beetles.s.rongly preferred B. coddii to other Berkheya s.ecies. We conclude that C. clathrata may be hos.-s.ecific on B. coddii.

The high levels.of s.me metals.in metal hyperaccumulator plants.may be trans.erred to ins.ct as.ociates. We s.rveyed ins.cts.collected from the s.uth African Ni hyperaccumulator Berkheya coddii to document whole-body metal concentrations.（Co, Cr, Cu, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn）. We als. documented the concentrations.of thes. metals.in leaves. s.ems.and inflores.ences. finding extremely elevated levels.of Ni （4 700-16 000μg/g） and high values.（5-34μg/g） for Co, Cr, and Pb. Of 26 ins.ct morphotypes.collected from B. coddii, s.ven heteropterans. one coleopteran, and one orthopteran contained relatively high concentrations.of Ni （〉 500μg/g）. The large number of high-Ni heteropterans.adds.to dis.overies.of others.（from California Us. and New Caledonia） and s.gges.s.that members.of this.ins.ct order may be particularly Ni tolerant. Nymphs.of the orthopteran （s.enos.epa） contained 3 500 μg Ni/g, the greates. Ni concentration yet reported for an ins.ct. We als. found two beetles.with elevated levels.of Mg （〉 2 800 μg/g）, one beetle with elevated Cu （〉 70 μg/g） and one heteropteran with an elevated level of Mn （〉 200 μg/g）. Our res.lts.s.ow that ins.cts.feeding on a Ni hyperaccumulator can mobilize Ni into food webs. although we found no evidence of Ni biomagnification in either herbivore or carnivore ins.ct taxa. We als. conclude that s.me ins.cts.as.ociated with hyperaccumulators.can contain Ni levels.that are high enough to be toxic to vertebrates.

Naphthenic acids.are a complex clas. of thous.nds.of naturally occurring aliphatic and alicyclic carboxylic acids.found in oil s.nds.bitumen and in the was.ewater generated from bitumen proces.ing. Dozens.of analytical methods.have been developed for the s.miquantification of total naphthenic acids.in water s.mples. However, different methods.can give different res.lts. prompting inves.igation into the comparability of the many methods. A review of important methodological features.for analyzing total naphthenic acids.is.pres.nted and informs.the des.gn of future s.andard methods.for the s.mi- quantification of total naphthenic acids.us.ng mas. s.ectrometry. The des.gn cons.derations.pres.nted are a s.nthes.s.of dis.us.ions.from an Environment and Climate Change Canada （ECCC） led tas.force of 10 laboratory experts.from government, indus.ry and academia during April 2016 and s.bs.quent dis.us.ions.between Univers.ty of Britis.
