Excitons,bound electron–hole pairs,in two-dimensional hybrid organic inorganic perovskites(2D hOIPs)are capable of forming hybrid light-matter states known as exciton-polaritons(E–Ps)when the excitonic medium is confined in an optical *** the case of 2D hOIPs,they can self-hybridize into E–Ps at specific thicknesses of the hOIP crystals that form a resonant optical cavity with the ***,the fundamental properties of these self-hybridized E–Ps in 2D hOIPs,including their role in ultrafast energy and/or charge transfer at interfaces,remain ***,we demonstrate that>0.5µm thick 2D hOIP crystals on Au substrates are capable of supporting multiple-orders of self-hybridized E–P *** E–Ps have high Q factors(>100)and modulate the optical dispersion for the crystal to enhance sub-gap absorption and *** varying excitation energy and ultrafast measurements,we also confirm energy transfer from higher energy E–Ps to lower energy E–***,we also demonstrate that E–Ps are capable of charge transport and transfer at *** findings provide new insights into charge and energy transfer in E–Ps opening new opportunities towards their manipulation for polaritonic devices.

Artificial light at night(ALAN) pollution alters bat lunar chronobiology:insights from broad-scale long-term acoustic monitoring

Background The timing of behavior and habitat use of nocturnal animals can be influenced by the lunar cycle in nature. The prevalence of artificial light at night(ALAN) has been recognized as a source of environmental pol-lution. The interaction between ALAN and the lunar cycle on bat behavior is important for understanding anthro-pogenic effects on bats. We utilized a decade(2012–2022) of acoustic monitoring data collected in North Carolina, United States, to investigate the relationship between bat activity, lunar cycle, and light pollution. We examined whether the amount of lunar illumination affected species-specific nightly activity and whether hourly bat activity patterns varied between nights with different moon phases. We further investigated if the relationship between bat activity and the lunar cycle might be altered by light *** We found that seven bat species showed activity variation across nights in relation to the amount of moon illumination when ALAN was absent. In general, bats were less active on full moon nights compared to new moon nights. Light pollution interacted with the bat–lunar relationship in five of the seven species, masking the effect of the lunar cycle. We identified delayed bat activity patterns on nights with a full or waxing moon in seven species, and light pollution altered that pattern in four species. Overall, ALAN was associated with decreased bat activity inde-pendent of lunar cycle *** Our study demonstrated that at a broad spatial scale, ALAN negatively affected many North American temperate bat species and altered their lunar chronobiology. As light pollution is spreading to historically dark areas and habitats, ALAN might couple with other threats, such as the white-nose syndrome or climate change, to cause cascading damage in the environment that depends on ecosystem services such as pest control provided by bats. Luteolin， a common flavone in vegetables， acts as a hormetin possessing neurotrophic function: signaling mediated by inducing mitochondrial stress

This study aims to uncover the hormetic process of luteolin， a common dietary flavone， in neuronal cells through its role in inducing mitochondrial stress. In rat pheochromocytoma PC12 cells， luteolin at low concentrations caused a mild and reversible loss of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP)， while high concentrations of luteolin triggered intense and sustained depolarization of MMP. The MMP disturbance was shown to have a close association with the trophic and/or toxic effects triggered by luteolin; because the common mitochondrial uncouplers shared similar bi-phase dose-response on cell viability， as that of luteolin. Along with the induced MMP pertubation， luteolin triggered the development of autophagy and mitophagy， as determined by mCherry-GFP-LC3B tandem protein， and by the co-localization of mitochondrial/lysosomal staining. Subsequent application of autophagy inhibitors in the cultures blocked the luteolin-induced neurotrophic activities and sensitized the cells to be less resistant to luteolin-mediated cytotoxicity. Other flavonoids also displayed similar properties in the cultures， indicating that these compounds act as hormetic pharmacological inducers that stimulate cells to become more resilient and adapt to threats. This study provides a unifying mechanistic explanation for the neuro-beneficial effects of luteolin and other flavonoids.

影响评价在全球能源转型中发挥重要作用，为识别与管理可再生能源项目影响提供理论知识。然而，对于影响评价工作在可再生能源开发方面的实际成效一直存在争议。本文基于对加拿大风能发展影响评价应用的内容分析，探讨分析了风能项目中通常评估的环境和社会影响以及提出的缓解方案。结果显示，包括缓解措施在内，生物物理影响与社会影响之间存在着相当大的不平衡。相比于社会影响，影响评价在生物物理影响方面包含更多的解决办法，其影响与缓解办法的比率为1∶4.3，而社会影响方面仅为1∶1.3。大多数缓解办法侧重于最大限度地减少影响，其次是避免影响，而在时间、实施方法和责任方面描述并不清晰。尽管存在共同影响，但跨项目的缓解措施过于模糊或不精确，无法支持评估中的可转移实践，无法提高效率。改进对可再生能源项目影响和缓解方案的理解，并不断在项目中积累经验，是推进影响评价在向可再生能源过渡中发挥作用的基础。

hISP-1 Inhibits hSV-1 Infection in Cultured Vero Cells

herpes simplex virus-1 (hSV-1) remains a leading cause of viral disease worldwide and is spread by direct contact with infected lesions. There is no vaccine against hSV-1 infections and there remains a need to identify therapeutics that could reduce the spread. In this study various hispolon compounds were analyzed to determine their antiviral potential against hSV-1 infections in cultured Vero cells. To determine the effects on infectivity and possible mechanisms of inhibition, the following assays were conducted. In vitro cytotoxicity assays were conducted to determine the effect of the compounds on cell viability and the maximum non-cytotoxic concentrations. Antiviral assays measured cell viability, percent inhibition of infection following treatment with the compounds, and the effect on the viral infection cycle. These effects were visualized using inverted light and fluorescent microscopy. Of the 24 hispolons tested, only hispolon pyrazole-1 (hISP-1) demonstrated antiviral effects. hISP-1 was demonstrated to effect early stages in hSV-1 infection in cultured Vero cells (attachment, penetration, and post-penetration). In silico modeling analyses were conducted to analyze the interactions between hISP-1 and viral glycoprotein D (gD). hISP-1 is safe at concentrations tested and is effective in inhibiting infection of hSV-1 in cultured cells. hISP-1 has potential for therapeutic use as an antiviral against hSV-1 infection, could work in synergy with other antivirals that work be a different modality, and could be developed as a component of a topical agent to reduce the spread of hSV-1 infections.

研究论文是学者与学科社群沟通的主要媒介,但少有研究关注在一份期刊内,不同研究主题的写作实践在多大程度上存在差异。本研究通过比较《应用语言学》期刊语言习得和话语分析论文中互动元话语的使用情况,弥补这一不足。基于每个研究主题30篇研究论文的语料库,结果显示,语言习得领域的作者显著更频繁地使用增加性和结果性过渡标记语、重述语和非嵌入式引用,而话语分析者更倾向于使用例证、线性和非线性引用以及主题转换。这些差异都可以归因于学科研究范式的特点,这导致了学术写作中不同的知识构建和互动模式。研究结果为元话语在构建学科知识的修辞功能提供了实证证据,并对学术英语教师提供了教学意义,帮助应用语言学学者更好地了解国际发表的语言特点。

Comparison of Cognitive Registration Transrectal Ultrasound-Guided Targeted Biopsy of Prostate to Systematic 12-Core Biopsy: A Retrospective, Multicentre Study

Introduction: Prostate cancer (PCa) is the third most prevalent cancer among Malaysian males, often diagnosed at advanced stages, leading to suboptimal outcomes. While transrectal ultrasound-guided systematic biopsy (TRUS-SB) is the primary diagnostic method, prebiopsy multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) is gaining popularity in identifying suspicious lesions. This study addresses the lack of comprehensive investigations into the efficacy of cognitive registration TRUS targeted biopsy (COG-TB) compared to conventional TRUS-SB, considering the resource limitations of the Malaysian healthcare system. Materials and Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted in two Malaysian healthcare facilities. 116 adult patients with a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level of more than 4 ng/mL who underwent both COG-TB and TRUS-SB between October 2020 and March 2022 were included. Primary outcomes were cancer detection rate and histopathological outcomes, including Gleason score. Results: COG-TB showed a higher overall cancer detection rate (50%) compared to TRUS-SB (44%). Clinically significant cancer detection rates were similar between COG-TB and TRUS-SB (37.1%). Further analysis revealed that both COG-TB and TRUS-SB detected clinically significant cancer in 30.2% of patients, did not detect it in 56.0%, and had conflicting findings in 16 patients (p Conclusion: COG-TB and TRUS-SB have comparable detection rates for clinically significant prostate cancer, with COG-TB showing a higher tendency to detect insignificant prostate cancer. Further studies comparing these methods are warranted.
